What the Earth 5 · Tian Liang type is like
An Earth 5 Tian Liang is a mountain: it will not come looking for you, but you know it is always there. Ask them something you asked last year and the answer is the same, and still right.
Tian Liang meets the Earth 5 Bureau
The verse in the Complete Book says “Tian Liang by origin belongs to earth, the most lucky star of the Southern Dipper. Its transformed qi is shelter, and it is called Prolonger of Life.” The Earth 5 Bureau is Earth too, so like meets like, earth on earth, and Tian Liang's weight shows here at its most direct: slow, steady, able to bear weight. On the chart Tian Liang most often sits in Si, about 27%; Wu and Wei about 20% each; Zi and Chou about 13% each; Hai about 7%. Temple (Miao), Prosperous (Wang) and Fallen (Xian) each take about 33%, one of the most even splits of the five bureaus. The 33% in Zi or Wu have Tai Yang opposite; the 33% in Chou or Wei have Tian Ji; the 33% in Si or Hai have Tian Tong. With each opposite palace taking an equal share, one Earth 5 Tian Liang is warmed outward by Tai Yang, another is quickened by Tian Ji, another softened by Tian Tong.
Work and money
The Xing Xing Fu says “Tian Liang steady and weighty, with a heart as pure as jade and as clear as ice.” Steadiness is the outside; the clean heart is the inside. They do not hide agendas, and what they say is what they think. That makes them especially valued wherever long-term credibility counts: senior adviser, board member of a foundation or trade association, the elder in a family business, roles that need someone whose word holds and who keeps no hidden ledger. With money they prefer things that grow slowly, judged over ten years rather than three months.
Love and getting along
In love, their steadiness is the greatest gift. They will not offer sweet nothings every day, but they are there for every important moment in the other person's life. Their pace is slow, and the road from meeting to commitment can be long. A partner in a hurry needs to give them time; once they have thought it through, the commitment rarely shifts.
When things get stuck
A mountain that never moves never sees what lies on its other side. Earth on earth gets stuck most easily in not wanting change: the usual café, the usual route, the usual way of doing things, with even good suggestions from others blocked at first. A small rule helps: change one small thing each season, a new route, a new restaurant, a new tool. The mountain need not move. It is enough to let a cloud drift over now and then.
The rhythm of the 10-year periods
The second volume has two linked verses on Tian Liang in the luck periods. One says “When the luck period reaches Tian Liang it is best of all, like autumn chrysanthemums giving off their fragrance,” a decade the ancients saw as very good. The verse before it adds a condition, “with lucky stars added and in a temple position,” so the best case needs both. For an Earth 5 Tian Liang the first period is the Life Palace where Tian Liang sits, from age 5 (counted the traditional way); how bright it is and whether lucky stars are present depends on your own chart. Chrysanthemums bloom in autumn and do not compete with spring flowers for time, and the good in an Earth 5 Tian Liang is often something people catch the scent of slowly, over time. Changes follow at 15, 25 and 35.

Where it comes from in Purple Star Astrology
In this type Tian Liang leads the Life Palace. The Life Palace is the one of twelve that says who you are, and its main star sets your base color; when two main stars share it, the first one counts.
The bureau is the Earth 5 Bureau. The Five Elements Bureau comes from the Nayin of your Life Palace stem and branch; it places the Zi Wei star on the chart and sets the age your first 10-year period starts, which is 5 for this bureau. No bureau is better than another; Xingge reads it as a flavour of the same persona.

FAQ
Can an Earth 5 Tian Liang have the Yang Liang Chang Lu (Sun, Beam, Literary and Wealth) pattern?
Yes, it can. With Tian Liang alone in the Life Palace, Tai Yang is always in the San Fang Si Zheng: opposite in Zi or Wu, in the trine for Chou, Wei, Si and Hai. If Wen Chang and either Lu Cun or a Hua Lu also gather there, a Xingge chart marks the pattern. The third volume says “Tian Liang, Tai Yang, Wen Chang and Lu meeting: the first name called at the palace examination,” a pattern the ancients linked to exams and honours; today it reads as a real edge in study and credentials. Whether Wen Chang and the Lu star are present depends on birth year and hour.
The old book says Tian Liang “is long-lived.” Does that mean a long life?
The second volume says Tian Liang “governs long life: it is the star of longevity” and that the person is “long-lived”; in the old texts it is the longevity star. That is the star's symbolism, not a promise about lifespan. Today it reads better as standing the test of time: looking far ahead, keeping relationships for years, carrying more weight with age. Health is still read from the Health Palace and one's own habits.
How common is the Earth 5 · Tian Liang type?
Out of 262,980 charts cast for every day and every two-hour period from 1950–2009, 2,231 have Tian Liang leading the Life Palace and the Earth 5 Bureau: about 0.8%, roughly 1 in 118 people. Every day and hour is counted equally, so this is not the actual birth distribution of a population.
Why can two people born on the same day be different types?
Where your Life Palace falls depends on your birth month and birth hour, and your Five Elements Bureau comes from the stem and branch of that palace. So on the same day, one two-hour period later moves the Life Palace by one, and the main star and bureau can both change. The twelve hours of a single day usually produce several different types.
What is the Five Elements Bureau?
The Five Elements Bureau is the Nayin element of your Life Palace stem and branch: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6. The number places the Zi Wei star on the chart and is also the age your first 10-year period begins (2 for Water, 6 for Fire). A bigger number is not better or worse; Xingge reads the element as a flavour of the same persona.
How is this different from MBTI?
MBTI comes from a questionnaire about how you see yourself. An Xingge type comes from your birth date and time, with nothing to answer, and the same birth details always give the same type. They work well side by side: MBTI describes your current habits, the chart describes your underlying nature and the rhythm of your life.
Which type do I get if my Life Palace has two main stars?
When two main stars share the Life Palace, the one listed first (in the order of the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups) sets the persona, the same as on your chart page. A Life Palace with no main star is the Empty Palace: the Traveler.
A type looks only at the Life Palace and the bureau: the roughest outline of a chart. People of the same type differ in the Body Palace, the surrounding palaces and the transformations.
