What the Earth 5 · Tian Xiang type is like
If a family needed someone to keep all its important papers, the first name to come up would usually be the Earth 5 Tian Xiang. Their reliability makes no noise: like a pond with firm banks, never too full and never too low, always there.
Tian Xiang meets the Earth 5 Bureau
The second volume of the Complete Book describes Tian Xiang this way: “The person looks solid and steady, is clean in conduct, likes wine and food, and has ample food, clothing and income.” Solid and steady fits the Earth 5 Bureau especially well. Tian Xiang is Water and the bureau is Earth; Earth holds back Water, so the bureau gathers Tian Xiang's water into a pond with edges and depth, which does not spill in every direction. That is why this Tian Xiang works with a sense of proportion and checks the scope before saying yes. On the chart Tian Xiang sits in Mao or Si about 21% of the time each, Chou about 18%, and Wei, Hai and You about 14% each. Gain (De) brightness is about 48%, Fallen (Xian) 34%, Temple (Miao) 18%. The opposite palace is evenly split: Zi Wei with Po Jun about 31%, Wu Qu with Po Jun and Lian Zhen with Po Jun about 34% each.
Work and money
“Likes wine and food” is the old phrasing. Today it reads as knowing how to eat well, how to host, and how to make people feel settled in their company. That suits industries built on long-term trust: insurance, trusts, property, family businesses, sales with long-standing clients. Their money stays put, and “ample food, clothing and income” today means something closer to a grounded life with no worry about the next meal. When they choose, they look ten years ahead, not to next month.
Love and getting along
Their care mostly hides in what they remember: the name of a hometown mentioned once, a dish from the other person's childhood, an old hurt they would rather not revisit. They keep it all, never parade it, and use it at the right moment. Their pace is slow, and the road from meeting to commitment can be long; a partner hoping for a passionate declaration may have to wait. But the steadiness they give is the kind that, looked back on ten years later, is still exactly where it was.
When things get stuck
A pond with banks too tight goes still. They keep rules, keep promises, and keep to familiar routines, so when change is needed their first instinct is often to block it. A trial period helps: try the new way for three months, and go back if it does not work. Change is less frightening than it looks, and a pond that takes in a little fresh water now and then runs clearer.
The rhythm of the 10-year periods
Where the pond draws its water from shows up for an Earth 5 Tian Xiang at the change at 15. From 5 to 14 (counted the traditional way) the life period runs through the Life Palace where Tian Xiang sits; after that it moves to either the Parents Palace or the Siblings Palace, depending on the yin or yang of the birth year and on sex. Those who move into the Parents Palace spend that decade facing the source of the rules: elders, teachers, family expectations, and they practise protecting others' dignity without swallowing their own views. Those who move into the Siblings Palace face peers: brothers and sisters, classmates, their first circle of friends, and they practise staying even-handed among friends. The two roads teach different kinds of proportion, and checking which way your own chart runs shows where that decade's lessons take place. Further changes come at 25 and 35.

Where it comes from in Purple Star Astrology
In this type Tian Xiang leads the Life Palace. The Life Palace is the one of twelve that says who you are, and its main star sets your base color; when two main stars share it, the first one counts.
The bureau is the Earth 5 Bureau. The Five Elements Bureau comes from the Nayin of your Life Palace stem and branch; it places the Zi Wei star on the chart and sets the age your first 10-year period starts, which is 5 for this bureau. No bureau is better than another; Xingge reads it as a flavour of the same persona.

FAQ
Does someone with Tian Xiang in the Life Palace have the Fu Xiang Chao Yuan (Treasury and Minister Pay Court) pattern?
No. On a Xingge chart, Fu Xiang Chao Yuan means the Life Palace has neither Tian Fu nor Tian Xiang, while both shine in from the San Fang Si Zheng. With Tian Xiang itself in the Life Palace, that condition is not met. Even so, when Tian Xiang sits alone in the Life Palace, Tian Fu is always in one of its trine palaces. The treasury star and the seal star are a natural pair, which gives this type steadier footing in resources and trust.
Is an Earth 5 Tian Xiang too cautious?
Slow is the better word. They need to see the scope clearly before moving, so they start later than others, but once they are sure something works they keep at it for a long time, steadily. The trick to working with them is to break a new idea into small steps with visible edges. They will be more willing to try than you might expect.
How common is the Earth 5 · Tian Xiang type?
Out of 262,980 charts cast for every day and every two-hour period from 1950–2009, 2,156 have Tian Xiang leading the Life Palace and the Earth 5 Bureau: about 0.8%, roughly 1 in 122 people. Every day and hour is counted equally, so this is not the actual birth distribution of a population.
Why can two people born on the same day be different types?
Where your Life Palace falls depends on your birth month and birth hour, and your Five Elements Bureau comes from the stem and branch of that palace. So on the same day, one two-hour period later moves the Life Palace by one, and the main star and bureau can both change. The twelve hours of a single day usually produce several different types.
What is the Five Elements Bureau?
The Five Elements Bureau is the Nayin element of your Life Palace stem and branch: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6. The number places the Zi Wei star on the chart and is also the age your first 10-year period begins (2 for Water, 6 for Fire). A bigger number is not better or worse; Xingge reads the element as a flavour of the same persona.
How is this different from MBTI?
MBTI comes from a questionnaire about how you see yourself. An Xingge type comes from your birth date and time, with nothing to answer, and the same birth details always give the same type. They work well side by side: MBTI describes your current habits, the chart describes your underlying nature and the rhythm of your life.
Which type do I get if my Life Palace has two main stars?
When two main stars share the Life Palace, the one listed first (in the order of the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups) sets the persona, the same as on your chart page. A Life Palace with no main star is the Empty Palace: the Traveler.
A type looks only at the Life Palace and the bureau: the roughest outline of a chart. People of the same type differ in the Body Palace, the surrounding palaces and the transformations.
