What the Earth 5 · Po Jun type is like

Channel a rushing river into a dam and the water does not shrink; it starts generating power. An Earth 5 Po Jun is the kind who reforms from inside the system.

Po Jun meets the Earth 5 Bureau

Earth holds back Water, so here the bureau keeps the star in check: Po Jun is Water, the Earth 5 Bureau is Earth, and the bureau works like an embankment that gathers Po Jun's waves into a channel. The waves do not vanish; they stop spilling everywhere and are directed one way, which concentrates their force. Writing about Po Jun, the Xing Yuan Lun says: “If it is overcome by the four tombs (earth), then to keep its waters full it must have Wu Qu's metal to keep its stream from ever running dry; only then is it fine.” The old text is talking about Po Jun meeting the earth of the four tomb palaces and needing Wu Qu's metal to keep the source flowing; it concerns palaces and stars, not the Earth 5 Bureau. Borrowed as an image, though, it fits this type well: water hemmed in by earth needs a living source. Xu is one of the four tombs, and about 27% of this type sit there, facing Zi Wei with Tian Xiang. Another 27% sit in Shen, which faces Wu Qu with Tian Xiang.

Work and money

They reform from within: not overturning the table but changing the rules one by one; not building a new stove but rebuilding the old one completely. Policy, systems, organisational charters, industry standards: the more patience a change needs, the better they hold out. With money their changes come in instalments: save a bit, change a bit, save again, change again. It looks slow, and looking back, everything is different.

Love and getting along

In love their changes come in steps too. If they want to move, they discuss it with the partner for six months first; if they want to change jobs, they work out the household budget first. The partner is rarely startled, and often realises one day that over the years their life together has quietly switched to a new version. They need a partner who likes planning with them, and an occasional reminder that not everything needs changing.

When things get stuck

Close the dam too tight and the river below runs dry. They are so used to driving change through the rules that sometimes, when bold cuts are needed, they are still waiting for the procedure to finish. Learning which things can change slowly and which get worse the longer they wait helps. The other risk is feeling bottled up: with the waves held in too long, their energy has nowhere to go. An outlet free of rules, a sport, a side project, a spur-of-the-moment trip, gives it somewhere to flow.

The rhythm of the 10-year periods

The second volume says: “When Po Jun enters the luck period it must be weighed with care: only in a temple position do you know that blessings and income will flourish. If it also meets Wen Chang together with Tian Kui and Tian Yue, when the luck period comes to this place it is glorious indeed.” On the old reading, a Po Jun period needs careful study; only at Temple does it bring flourishing fortune, and with Wen Chang, Tian Kui and Tian Yue it shines. For this type the first period falls in Po Jun's own Life Palace, from age 5 (counted the traditional way); about 33% sit at Temple in Zi or Wu, and for the rest it depends on brightness and lucky stars. Changes follow at 15, 25 and 35.

Where it comes from in Purple Star Astrology

In this type Po Jun leads the Life Palace. The Life Palace is the one of twelve that says who you are, and its main star sets your base color; when two main stars share it, the first one counts.

The bureau is the Earth 5 Bureau. The Five Elements Bureau comes from the Nayin of your Life Palace stem and branch; it places the Zi Wei star on the chart and sets the age your first 10-year period starts, which is 5 for this bureau. No bureau is better than another; Xingge reads it as a flavour of the same persona.

FAQ

The old book says “Po Jun alone has a nature hard to make out.” Is an Earth 5 Po Jun hard to understand?

The line comes from the Women's Gu Sui Fu in the first volume and says Po Jun's nature is not easy to read at a glance. Volume three repeats it with the note “judge so for both men's and women's charts,” so it is read here without regard to gender: Po Jun both tears down and builds, both charges and holds, and in Earth 5, contained by earth, it often looks calmer than it is. At first meeting they seem steady; only later do you notice they are always working out how to change something. They are hard to read not because they hide, but because they have several sides at once.

Does an Earth 5 Po Jun get along with a Tian Xiang person?

Po Jun and Tian Xiang always face each other across the chart, one wanting change, the other wanting things settled fairly. An Earth 5 Po Jun is already used to driving change through the rules, and Tian Xiang is good at coordinating and drafting procedures, so together one sets the direction and the other turns it into a process everyone can accept, which is often very effective. The friction is speed: Po Jun finds it slow, Tian Xiang fears disorder. Break the change into stages and agree on the scope of each one, and both can relax.

How common is the Earth 5 · Po Jun type?

Out of 262,980 charts cast for every day and every two-hour period from 1950–2009, 2,225 have Po Jun leading the Life Palace and the Earth 5 Bureau: about 0.8%, roughly 1 in 118 people. Every day and hour is counted equally, so this is not the actual birth distribution of a population.

Why can two people born on the same day be different types?

Where your Life Palace falls depends on your birth month and birth hour, and your Five Elements Bureau comes from the stem and branch of that palace. So on the same day, one two-hour period later moves the Life Palace by one, and the main star and bureau can both change. The twelve hours of a single day usually produce several different types.

What is the Five Elements Bureau?

The Five Elements Bureau is the Nayin element of your Life Palace stem and branch: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6. The number places the Zi Wei star on the chart and is also the age your first 10-year period begins (2 for Water, 6 for Fire). A bigger number is not better or worse; Xingge reads the element as a flavour of the same persona.

How is this different from MBTI?

MBTI comes from a questionnaire about how you see yourself. An Xingge type comes from your birth date and time, with nothing to answer, and the same birth details always give the same type. They work well side by side: MBTI describes your current habits, the chart describes your underlying nature and the rhythm of your life.

Which type do I get if my Life Palace has two main stars?

When two main stars share the Life Palace, the one listed first (in the order of the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups) sets the persona, the same as on your chart page. A Life Palace with no main star is the Empty Palace: the Traveler.

A type looks only at the Life Palace and the bureau: the roughest outline of a chart. People of the same type differ in the Body Palace, the surrounding palaces and the transformations.
