Where the chart lines up

Leaving Impressionism, then returning to colour

After seeing works by Raphael and other Renaissance masters in Italy in 1881, Renoir became convinced he was on the wrong path, declaring, "I had gone as far as I could with Impressionism and I realized I could neither paint nor draw." For the next several years he painted in a more severe style that stressed outline; after 1890 he changed direction again, returning to thinly brushed colour. In his chart, the Life Palace holds Po Jun (Miao). Po Jun is the star that breaks the existing state and starts again, which lines up with his overturning his own method twice.

First success at the Salon in 1868

In 1868 Renoir had his first success at the Salon with Lise with a Parasol. At the first Impressionist exhibition in April 1874 he showed six works; critics were mostly hostile to the exhibition as a whole, but his paintings were comparatively well received. This period falls in his Decade Luck for nominal ages 25–34 (1865–1874), and in the decade's Four Transformations Tan Lang (Miao) takes Hua Lu (Transformation of Wealth) and enters the natal Career Palace. The Career Palace covers career, and Hua Lu is returns, which lines up with his first success in this decade.

A patron's invitations to the seaside

In 1879 Renoir met Paul Bérard, who soon became his main patron and regularly invited him to paint and holiday at the Château de Wargemont on the Normandy coast. In his chart, the Friends Palace holds Ju Men (Wang) with Hua Lu. The Friends Palace covers friends and the people one deals with, and Hua Lu is returns: a patron like Bérard is support of exactly that kind.
