A taste for colossal ideas
In 1855–1856 Bartholdi travelled in Yemen and Egypt with the painter Jean-Léon Gérôme and others, and the trip sparked his interest in colossal sculpture; in 1869 he proposed a giant torch-bearing figure as a lighthouse at the entrance of the Suez Canal, and in 1871 he went to the United States to propose a colossal statue as a gift from France. His Life Palace holds Po Jun (Wang) with Hua Quan. Po Jun is the star of breaking convention and opening new ground, and Hua Quan is taking the lead, which fits his putting forward ideas on a vast scale.

In October 1886 (nominal age 53) the Statue of Liberty was formally presented as a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States, standing on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor; at 46 metres, it was the largest work of its kind completed up to that time. In 1886 his annual Life Palace moves to his natal Travel Palace. The Travel Palace stands for going out and being away from home, and his work standing in a harbour across the Atlantic matches this palace.

As a child Bartholdi moved to Paris with his mother and older brother, but the family often returned to Colmar in Alsace for long stays and kept their house there; Bartholdi himself kept this childhood home, which became the Bartholdi Museum in 1922. His chart shows Tai Yang (De) with Hua Ji (Transformation of Obstruction) in the Property Palace. The Property Palace stands for the home, and Hua Ji marks where care and thought go, which lines up with his keeping the old house and often going back to live there.
