In 1966 Saint Laurent introduced Le Smoking, a tuxedo suit for women; after witnessing the social upheaval in France in 1968, he put trousers into his collections, and he is often credited as the leading designer in making trousers acceptable for women. From nominal ages 16–25 (1951–1960) he was in the Decade Luck of his Parents Palace. In 1953 he won third prize in a contest for young designers organised by the International Wool Secretariat, and the following year won first prize; Vogue France editor Michel de Brunhoff encouraged him to enrol at the couture school of the Chambre Syndicale, and in 1955 arranged for him to meet Dior, who hired him on the spot. In 1983 Saint Laurent and Bergé bought Château Gabriel, a neo-gothic villa near Deauville. A great admirer of Marcel Proust, he had each bedroom named after characters in À la recherche du temps perdu.
