What the Quan Shu says about this palaceLook at where Zi Wei lodges: it presides over the whole order of the heavens and leads the constellations to form the enclosures. If the earth star rests in its own enclosure, it is as if it could set things in motion. The metal star is in sole charge of the treasury and most fears Kong Wang, the empty positions.“Tai Wei Fu” ›Tian Ji gives a figure neither tall nor short, and a heart inclined to do good. Wu Qu has a code of conduct that is utterly strict and held utterly tight, and a resolute, decisive mind.“Xing Xing Fu” ›Ju Men is a star of right and wrong, quarrels and gossip; in its temple the person is honest, warm and kind. Tian Xiang is full of vigour, Tian Liang steady and weighty, with a heart as pure as jade and as clear as ice.“Xing Xing Fu” ›My Quan Shu (39 lines on this palace) ›

The Tibetan Mastiff: Wu Qu in the Life Palace

Zhang Jike plays with extreme aggression. Coach Liu Guoliang gave him the nickname Tibetan Mastiff for a temperament that is hard to tame, and the International Table Tennis Federation has described him as a player born for the big occasion. The main stars of his Life Palace are Wu Qu (De) and Tian Xiang (Miao). In plain terms Wu Qu is hard, direct and quick to act, ready to meet a big match head-on. That lines up with his fierce, unyielding style of play.

Olympic gold in London, 2012

In the men's singles final at the 2012 London Olympics, Zhang Jike beat Wang Hao 4–1 to take gold, completing the Grand Slam in 445 days, the fastest of any player. By the chart he was nominal age 26 that year, inside the Decade Luck of his Spouse Palace (roughly 2010–2019). Both the decade's Four Transformations and the annual Four Transformations of 2012, a Ren Chen year, put Zi Wei with Hua Quan (Transformation of Power) in his natal Career Palace: authority at work lit up twice over, and the chart shows these years centered on his career.

His toughest rival was a teammate

In all three finals of Zhang Jike's Grand Slam, at the World Championships, the World Cup and the Olympics, his opponent was teammate Wang Hao; his peers on the national team were also his biggest rivals. Among his birth-year Four Transformations, Tian Tong with Hua Quan and Ju Men with Hua Ji (Transformation of Obstruction) both fall in the Siblings Palace. The Siblings Palace covers peers and those who stand alongside: Hua Quan means having to settle who comes out on top, and Hua Ji marks where care and effort go. The hardest hurdle stood right beside him, among equals.
