The Nature of Tian Xiang

〈天相星性情〉

The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 2: Placing the stars and the twelve palaces · Original text with translation

Introduction

This is Tian Xiang in the 'natures of the stars' section of volume two of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, the eleventh of the fourteen major stars. Like the other major-star chapters of volume two, it falls into three parts:

  • General nature (segments 1 to 4): Tian Xiang belongs to water, is a Southern Dipper star, has the seal as its transformed qi and is master of the Career Palace. First its looks and temper; then, meeting Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, Wen Chang and Wen Qu, the sun and the moon, 'wealth and office are both fine'; travelling with Wu Qu, Po Jun, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo the person is a craftsman, and with Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Ju Men and Tian Ji added, 「傷刑不善終」.
  • Twelve-palace table (segments 5 to 10): in which branch Tian Xiang is in its temple, has its place or is fallen, which major star shares its palace, and people of which year stems have a wealth and office pattern.
  • Three sets of verses: for a man's chart, a woman's chart and the luck periods. The luck-period verses judge what happens when the Decade Luck or Minor Luck reaches Tian Xiang; they are verdicts on timing, not conditions visible in the natal chart.

A few points as you read: a 'wealth and office pattern' is a chart good for both money and official career; 'monks and Daoists' are people who have left the household life; 「只可偏房與侍婢」 in the verse for women is an old verdict on women's charts, translated as it stands. In segment 4 the character 屯 in 「僧道屯吉」 makes no sense; the collation explains.

1天相水,南斗化印,為官祿主。為人相貌敦厚持重,清白好酒食,衣祿豐足。

TranslationTian Xiang belongs to water, belongs to the Southern Dipper, has the seal as its transformed qi, and is master of the Career Palace. The person looks solid and steady, is clean in conduct, likes wine and food, and has ample food, clothing and income.

南斗
The Southern Dipper: Dou Shu sorts the stars into the Southern Dipper, the Northern Dipper and the central heaven; Tian Xiang belongs to the Southern Dipper.
化印
Transformed into the seal: Tian Xiang's transformed qi is the seal, the official seal of a government office, by extension management and position.
衣祿
Clothing and income: food, clothes and salary, the needs of life in general.
Commentary

The three labels at the start are the keys to Tian Xiang: water, Southern Dipper, the seal. A seal is what an office stamps documents with; it gives no orders itself but endorses and executes for those above, so the Quan Shu calls it 「為官祿主」, and What Does Tian Xiang Govern? calls it 「佐帝之位」. 'Likes wine and food, ample food and income' speaks of a settled life, not great riches.

Today the reading leans toward roles such as adviser, manager or coordinator: the person does best with rules to follow and someone to assist. On a Xingge chart Tian Xiang never takes any of the four transformations, so its strength has to be judged from the major star sharing its palace and the two palaces on either side.

2紫府左右昌曲日月嘉會,財官雙美,位至三公。

TranslationIf Tian Xiang meets Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, the sun (Tai Yang) and the moon (Tai Yin) in a fine gathering, wealth and office are both fine, and rank reaches the Three Excellencies.

嘉會
A fine gathering: lucky stars meeting in the San Fang Si Zheng.
三公
The Three Excellencies: the three highest posts at the old court, standing for the very highest office.
Commentary

This line lists Tian Xiang's ideal team: Zi Wei and Tian Fu are the emperor and the treasury, Zuo Fu and You Bi are aides, Wen Chang and Wen Qu are documents, the sun and moon are light. Tian Xiang is the seal, and a seal needs someone to use it and something to stamp, so the fuller the lucky stars, the more 'wealth and office are both fine'.

One structural fact on the chart: Tian Xiang's trine always holds Tian Fu, and its opposite palace is always Po Jun. So Tian Fu is all but standard equipment for Tian Xiang, and what matters is whether Zuo Fu and You Bi, Wen Chang and Wen Qu, or the sun and moon enter the San Fang Si Zheng. On your own chart, check whether these stars sit in the San Fang Si Zheng of Tian Xiang's palace. 'The Three Excellencies' was the top of the old court; today it reads as reaching the top of an organisation, without having to be an official.

3與武破羊陀同行則為巧藝,更加火鈴巨機,則傷刑不善終,天相又能化廉貞之惡。

TranslationTravelling with Wu Qu, Po Jun, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo, the person is a craftsman; with Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Ju Men and Tian Ji added, there is injury and punishment and no good end. Tian Xiang can also transform Lian Zhen's malice.

巧藝
Skilled craft: living by a trade or technical skill.
傷刑
Injury and punishment: bodily harm, or legal punishment.
Commentary

The line has three layers: Wu Qu, Po Jun, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo first, with the verdict 'craftsman'; add Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Ju Men and Tian Ji and it rises to 「傷刑不善終」; the last sentence turns back to Tian Xiang's strength. Note that Po Jun is always opposite Tian Xiang, so 'Po Jun' is nearly always present; the real watershed is Wu Qu in the same palace (Yin or Shen) or meeting from the San Fang, plus Qing Yang and Tuo Luo. What Does Tian Xiang Govern? says much the same: 「陷地貪廉武破羊陀殺湊,巧藝安身」.

A 'craftsman' in old times was an artisan, ranked below the scholar-officials; technical jobs, engineering and hand-made trades are no lower today, and it is enough to read it as standing on a specialist skill. On 'transforming Lian Zhen's malice', see The Nature of Lian Zhen: it means Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang sharing a palace in Zi or Wu.

✎ Note

4女命入廟性溫和,衣祿遂心,僧道屯吉。

TranslationA woman's chart with Tian Xiang in its temple: gentle by nature, with food, clothing and income to her heart's content. For monks and Daoists it is also lucky.

僧道
Monks and Daoist priests: people who have left the household life.

Textual note: In 「僧道屯吉」 the character 屯 makes no sense here (it means hardship, or to gather); it is probably a miscopy of 亦 (also) or 主 (means); the translation follows 'also lucky'.

Commentary

This line on women gives only one condition: in its temple. By the Quan Shu's and Xingge's brightness table, Tian Xiang is in its temple in Zi, Wu, Chou, Yin and Shen, fallen in Mao and You, and has its place (De) everywhere else. 'Gentle, with food and income to her heart's content' is the same solid, steady temperament of segment 1, said of a woman. The Xiyi passage in What Does Tian Xiang Govern? says such a woman is 「聰明端莊,志過丈夫」, a stronger tone than here; read the two together: gentle outside, decided inside.

The half-sentence about monks and Daoists is covered in the collation: for a person in religious life, Tian Xiang in its temple is also lucky. There is no need to read the gentleness as passive. It is the gentleness of a coordinator, and it rests on having rules to work by.

✎ Note

5子午宮入廟,與廉貞同度,丁己癸甲生人財官格。

TranslationIn Zi and Wu it is in its temple, in the same palace as Lian Zhen; for people born in Ding, Ji, Gui or Jia years it is a wealth and office pattern.

同度
In the same degree: in the same palace.
財官格
A wealth and office pattern: a chart good for both money and official career.
Commentary

With Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang together in Zi or Wu, each of the four stems has its reason: in Jia years Lian Zhen's Hua Lu is right in the palace; in Ding and Ji years Lu Cun is in Wu; in Gui years Lu Cun is in Zi and Po Jun's Hua Lu shines in from opposite. Broadly, the list is the years when Lu enters the palace itself or the one opposite, on top of segment 3's point that Tian Xiang transforms Lian Zhen's malice, the seal holding down Lian Zhen's 'prisoner' nature.

On a Xingge chart: the Life Palace in Zi or Wu with Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang side by side, then look for a Lu Cun or Hua Lu mark in that palace or opposite. Conversely, in Jia years Qing Yang is in Mao and in Ding and Ji years in Wei, neither in Zi nor Wu, which is one more reason the list holds.

✎ Note

6卯酉宮陷地,乙辛生人吉。甲庚生人主困。

TranslationIn Mao and You it is in a fallen position; people born in Yi or Xin years have good fortune; people born in Jia or Geng years meet hardship.

Commentary

Mao and You are Tian Xiang's only fallen positions, marked Xian on a Xingge chart, with Lian Zhen and Po Jun in the opposite palace. The year stems split neatly: in Yi years Lu Cun is in Mao and in Xin years in You, Lu sitting right in the Life Palace, hence good fortune; in Jia years Qing Yang is in Mao and in Geng years in You, the ram's blade in the Life Palace, hence hardship.

So a fallen Tian Xiang is not unusable, but it depends heavily on whether Lu or Qing Yang comes into its palace. With the Life Palace in Mao or You, find where Lu Cun and Qing Yang sit first; that tells more than the brightness alone. In Jia years Lian Zhen's Hua Lu is also in the opposite palace and the Quan Shu still says hardship, which shows it weighs Qing Yang above a Hua Lu from opposite.

✎ Note

7辰戌宮得地,與紫微同度,財官格。

TranslationIn Chen and Xu it has its place, in the same palace as Zi Wei: a wealth and office pattern.

得地
Having its place: a position where the star still has some strength, below Miao and Wang.
Commentary

Zi Wei and Tian Xiang share a palace in Chen or Xu, with Po Jun opposite; later writers call this 'Zi Xiang'. The Quan Shu has the same line in The Nature of Zi Wei, listing five year stems, Yi, Ji, Jia, Geng and Gui, from Zi Wei's side; here no stems are given, only 'wealth and office pattern', so the two passages complete each other.

Life Master, Body Master and Notes on Chart Setup also says 「天相在辰戌為閑宮」, a different tone from 'having its place, a wealth and office pattern' here, one of the Quan Shu's internal inconsistencies. A reasonable reading: Tian Xiang alone in Chen or Xu only has its place, and it is Zi Wei in the same palace that lifts it to a wealth and office pattern; if Zi Wei has no Zuo Fu or You Bi to assist, the pattern carries little weight.

✎ Note

8丑宮入廟未宮得地,加吉星財官格。

TranslationIn Chou it is in its temple and in Wei it has its place; with lucky stars added, it is a wealth and office pattern.

Commentary

In Chou and Wei Tian Xiang sits alone, with Zi Wei and Po Jun opposite. This line lists no year stems but says it is a wealth and office pattern only 'with lucky stars added', a looser and vaguer condition than in Zi, Wu, Yin or Shen. Lucky stars usually means Zuo Fu and You Bi, Wen Chang and Wen Qu, Tian Kui and Tian Yue, in the Life Palace or its San Fang Si Zheng.

Tian Xiang never transforms, and when it sits alone its fortune depends especially on its neighbours. The two palaces beside it always hold Ju Men and Tian Liang: Ju Men with Hua Lu can make Cai Yin Jia Yin (wealth and shelter flanking the seal), while Ju Men with Hua Ji plus Qing Yang makes Xing Ji Jia Yin (punishment and obstruction flanking the seal). So when reading Tian Xiang in Chou or Wei, look for lucky stars and also for transformation marks in the two palaces beside it.

✎ Note

9寅申宮入廟,與武曲同度,丁甲庚生人財官格。

TranslationIn Yin and Shen it is in its temple, in the same palace as Wu Qu; for people born in Ding, Jia or Geng years it is a wealth and office pattern.

Commentary

Wu Qu and Tian Xiang share a palace in Yin or Shen, with Po Jun alone opposite. The three stems: in Jia years Lu Cun is in Yin and Wu Qu takes Hua Ke; in Geng years Lu Cun is in Shen and Wu Qu takes Hua Quan; in Ding years Lu Cun is in Wu, right in the trine of Yin. The Nature of Wu Qu lists Ding, Ji, Jia and Geng for the same combination, adding Ji (Wu Qu's Hua Lu); comparing the two shows that the Quan Shu lists the transformations of whichever star it starts from.

Remember segment 3: Tian Xiang meeting Wu Qu, Po Jun, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo is a craftsman. In Yin or Shen Wu Qu is already in the palace and Po Jun opposite, so if Qing Yang or Tuo Luo comes too, the wealth and office pattern slides toward 'craft'. One palace, two outcomes, and the difference is the malefic stars.

✎ Note

10巳亥宮得地,丙戊壬生人為福。

TranslationIn Si and Hai it has its place; people born in Bing, Wu or Ren years have blessings.

Commentary

In Si and Hai Tian Xiang sits alone and has its place, with Wu Qu and Po Jun opposite. In Bing and Wu years Lu Cun is in Si and in Ren years in Hai: all three stems are years when Lu Cun sits in Si or Hai. Here it says only 'blessings', not a wealth and office pattern, one grade lower.

The other side is Wu Qu and Po Jun clashing from opposite: half of segment 3's 'Wu Qu and Po Jun' condition is met here from birth, so with Qing Yang or Tuo Luo it slides toward craft more easily. Stars in Strong Positions: Fitting Patterns also speaks of Tian Xiang in Si with 「巳位天機天相臨」, worth reading alongside.

天相入男命吉凶訣:

12天相星辰貴等倫,照守身命喜無垠,為官必主居元宰,三合相逢福不輕。

TranslationThe star Tian Xiang is noble among its peers; shining on or guarding the Body and Life Palaces, its joys are boundless. In office he is sure to be first among chief ministers; met in the trine, its blessings are not slight.

等倫
Peers, one's kind. 「貴等倫」 is terse; roughly, among the stars it is of the noble kind.
元宰
First of the chief ministers.
三合
The trine: the two palaces four apart from a palace, forming a triangle with it.
Commentary

This verse lifts Tian Xiang very high: 'first among chief ministers'. The key words are 'shining on or guarding the Body and Life Palaces' and 'met in the trine': Tian Xiang need not sit in the Life Palace, and shining on it from the San Fang counts too. That fits the seal's nature: a seal is something to be used, and it works just as well from the trine.

People with Tian Xiang in the San Fang Si Zheng of the Life Palace are often put in roles of coordination, general affairs or process management, where being trusted is the first step. The verse is rhetoric that exaggerates; read it with the malefic-star conditions of segment 3, not on its own.

✎ Note

13天相吉星為命主,必定斯人多克己,財官祿主旺家資,權壓當時誰不美。

TranslationTian Xiang, a lucky star, as master of the Life Palace: this person is sure to be much given to self-restraint. Wealth, office and income all flourish and the family's assets prosper; his power overtops his contemporaries, and who would not call it fine?

命主
Master of the Life Palace: here the major star sitting in the Life Palace, not the Life Master star set by the birth-year branch.
克己
Self-restraint.
Commentary

'Much given to self-restraint' is the phrase to notice: Tian Xiang's nobility comes not from expansion but from measure and restraint. What Does Tian Xiang Govern? says it 「不隨惡而變志,不因殺而改移」, the same steadiness. 'His power overtops his contemporaries' looks like a contradiction but is the power of the seal: one does not act oneself, yet once the stamp comes down, it counts.

In a modern workplace the match is the people who sign off: legal, audit, administrative heads. Self-restraint has its price too; Tian Xiang is often said to care too much about appearances and to find it hard to say no, two sides of one temperament.

✎ Note

14天相之星武破同,羊陀火鈴更為凶,或作技術經商輩,若在空門享福隆。

TranslationThe star Tian Xiang together with Wu Qu and Po Jun, with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing and Ling Xing, is all the more unlucky. The person may be a technician or a merchant; if he enters the gate of emptiness, he enjoys abundant blessings.

空門
The gate of emptiness: Buddhism, that is, leaving the household life.
Commentary

This verse is segment 3 in verse form: with Wu Qu and Po Jun, and the four malefic stars, it is worse, and the way out is technical work or trade. But the third line says 'may be', and the fourth says that in religious life he enjoys abundant blessings, a milder tone than the prose 「傷刑不善終」, and it offers another road.

'Technicians and merchants' ranked near the bottom of the old order of scholars, farmers, artisans and merchants; that is a social value judgment, not a judgment of ability, and specialist skills or running one's own business are nothing bad today. As for 'blessings in the gate of emptiness', old books often steered heavily afflicted charts toward religious life; today it can be read as: stepping out of competition for power and concentrating on one's own field is the steadier course.

✎ Note

天相入女命吉凶訣:

16女人之命天相星,性格聰明百事寧,衣祿豐盈財帛足,旺夫貴子顯門庭。

TranslationA woman whose Life Palace has the star Tian Xiang is intelligent by nature and at peace in all matters; food and income are abundant and money ample; she prospers her husband, ennobles her sons and brings honour to the family gate.

Commentary

「旺夫貴子顯門庭」 in the women's verse is the old yardstick for a woman's chart: good or bad was measured by husband and sons. The first two lines, intelligent, at peace in all things, abundant food and income, are the ones about her. Star Combinations says 「天相之星女命纏,必當子貴及夫賢」 and lists people born in Ji years in Zi, Jia years in Wu and Geng years in Chen as noble patterns (see Star Combinations: Tian Xiang), more concrete than this verse.

Read today, a woman with Tian Xiang is someone who keeps a household or a team running; 'prospering her husband' can be read as real help to a partner's career, but it need not be the measure of her.

✎ Note

17破軍七殺來相會,羊陀火鈴最所忌,孤刑剋害六親無,只可偏房與侍婢。

Translation(A woman's Tian Xiang) met by Po Jun and Qi Sha, with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing and Ling Xing most to be avoided: lonely, punished, harming others, with none of her six kin to rely on; she can only be a secondary wife or a maidservant.

六親
The six kin: parents, siblings, spouse and children, one's closest relations.
偏房
A secondary wife: a concubine.
侍婢
A maidservant who waits on others.
破軍七殺來相會
Po Jun is always opposite Tian Xiang, while Qi Sha never enters Tian Xiang's San Fang Si Zheng, so 'Qi Sha' in this line has no match on a chart; the chart comparison marks only Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing and Ling Xing.
Commentary

The condition has a blind spot on the chart: Tian Xiang's opposite palace is always Po Jun, so 'Po Jun comes to meet it' holds for everyone with Tian Xiang in the Life Palace, while Qi Sha never appears in Tian Xiang's San Fang Si Zheng (Qi Sha always sits two palaces away from Tian Xiang, with one palace between), except through borrowed stars or the luck periods. So the real test in this verse is the second line: Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing and Ling Xing.

「只可偏房與侍婢」 is a harsh old verdict on women's charts, kept with its original meaning. A modern reading: in marriage she may end up in an unequal or unacknowledged position, with little help from her kin, and must rely on herself. Whether it holds still depends on whether the malefic stars really enter the Life Palace and its San Fang.

✎ Note

天相入限吉凶訣:

19天相之星敢主財,照臨二限悉無災,動作謀為皆遂意,悠遊享福自然來。

TranslationThe star Tian Xiang dares to govern wealth; shining on the two luck periods, there is no disaster at all; every move and plan goes as wished, and leisure and blessings come of themselves.

二限
The two luck periods: the Decade Luck and the Minor Luck.
Commentary

The 'two luck periods' in the luck-period verses are the Decade Luck and the Minor Luck. Tian Xiang shining on the luck palace means no disaster and plans that succeed, in line with 「限步逢之,富不可量」 in What Does Tian Xiang Govern?. When reading the Decade Luck on Xingge, switch to that ten-year period and see whether Tian Xiang is in the decade's Life Palace or its San Fang Si Zheng.

This verse and the next two form a set: the first gives the normal case, the other two the exceptions. So 'no disaster at all' assumes no malefic stars in the San Fang and should not be quoted alone.

✎ Note

20天相之星有幾般,三方不喜惡星纏,羊陀空劫重相會,口舌官災禍亦連。

TranslationThe star Tian Xiang comes in several kinds: in the San Fang it dislikes malefic stars entangling it. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Di Kong and Di Jie meeting in layers, quarrels, lawsuits and disasters follow one after another.

Commentary

This verse spells out the exceptions: what Tian Xiang fears is not one or two malefic stars but Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Di Kong and Di Jie 'meeting in layers', several malefic stars stacked in the San Fang Si Zheng. The result, 'quarrels and lawsuits', ties in with Tian Xiang as the seal: when a seal goes wrong, it is usually documents, contracts, signatures or guarantees.

In concrete modern terms: in such a period, take special care when standing guarantor, signing contracts or handling shared funds. On the chart, look at Qing Yang and Tuo Luo in the natal chart and the Decade Luck together, with the annual Qing Yang and Tuo Luo on top in the Annual Luck, before calling it 'layered'.

✎ Note

21限臨天相遇擎羊,作禍興殃不可當,更有火鈴諸殺湊,須教一命入泉鄉。

TranslationWhen the luck period comes to Tian Xiang and meets Qing Yang, it stirs up trouble and raises disaster that cannot be withstood; if Huo Xing, Ling Xing and other killing stars gather as well, it will surely send a life to the land of the springs.

泉鄉
The land of the springs: the Yellow Springs, where the dead go.
Commentary

This is the heaviest verse: a luck period with Qing Yang is already hard to withstand, and with Huo Xing, Ling Xing and other malefic stars gathered, 「一命入泉鄉」. The ancients saw a Tian Xiang period meeting the ram's blade as extremely dangerous, the same thinking as Xing Qiu Jia Yin (punishment and the prisoner flanking the seal): the seal star fears punishment most. Star Combinations also says 「天相廉貞擎羊來,多招刑杖難逃」 (see Star Combinations: Tian Xiang).

Verdicts of death like this are mostly warnings attached to extreme combinations in the old books. A real judgment has to see whether the natal chart, the Decade Luck and the Annual Luck are all triggered at once, not rest on one Qing Yang; but the Quan Shu's meaning is plainly grave and should not be read lightly.

FAQ

What does Tian Xiang govern in the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu?

The Quan Shu says Tian Xiang belongs to water, is a Southern Dipper star, has the seal as its transformed qi and is master of the Career Palace. The person looks solid and steady, is clean in conduct, likes wine and food, and has ample food and income; meeting Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, Wen Chang and Wen Qu, Tai Yang and Tai Yin, wealth and office are both fine and rank can reach the Three Excellencies.

What does it mean that Tian Xiang's transformed qi is the seal?

Each star's transformed qi is its emblematic nature. Tian Xiang's is the seal, the official seal of a government office, so the Quan Shu calls it master of the Career Palace: it governs management and position. The Quan Shu also says Tian Xiang 「能化廉貞之惡」: when Tian Xiang shares a palace with Lian Zhen it softens Lian Zhen's malice.

What happens when Tian Xiang meets Qing Yang and Tuo Luo?

The original says Tian Xiang travelling with Wu Qu, Po Jun, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo makes a person of 「巧藝」, someone who lives by a craft or technical skill; with Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Ju Men and Tian Ji as well, 「傷刑不善終」. The luck-period verse also says that when the luck period reaches Tian Xiang and meets Qing Yang, with Huo Xing, Ling Xing and other malefic stars too, 「須教一命入泉鄉」.

In which palaces is Tian Xiang in its temple?

According to this chapter: in its temple in Zi and Wu (with Lian Zhen), in Chou, and in Yin and Shen (with Wu Qu); having its place in Wei, in Chen and Xu (with Zi Wei), and in Si and Hai; fallen in Mao and You. This agrees with the brightness table in volume three and with the brightness shown on a Xingge chart.

What does the Quan Shu say about a woman with Tian Xiang in the Life Palace?

The Quan Shu says a woman with Tian Xiang in its temple is gentle by nature and has food and income to her heart's content; the verse says a woman whose Life Palace has Tian Xiang is intelligent, with abundant food and income, prospering her husband and ennobling her sons. But if Po Jun and Qi Sha meet it and Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing and Ling Xing are seen too, the original judges her lonely, punished and harmful to others, with no one among her kin to rely on: 「只可偏房與侍婢」.
