The name Xing Qiu Jia Yin is built from the transformation natures of three stars: "Xing," punishment, is ; "Qiu," restraint, is Lian Zhen (Lian Zhen transforms into Restraint); "Yin," the seal, is Tian Xiang (Tian Xiang transforms into the Seal). With the three together, the ancients read a combination tied to rules, law enforcement and managing affairs. It isn't common: about 1 chart in 35 has it in some palace. The conditions for Xing Qiu Jia Yin

Xingge's detection is: Tian Xiang, Lian Zhen and Qing Yang sit together in the same palace.

The name contains "jia," flanking, but the condition is actually sharing a palace, not flanking from either side. This matches the classics, as explained below.

Because star positions follow fixed rules, the combination can only appear in two places:

  • Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang only share a palace in Zi and Wu.
  • Qing Yang is always in the palace after Lu Cun, so for Qing Yang to land in Wu you must be born in a Bing or Wu year (Lu Cun in Si); to land in Zi, a Ren year (Lu Cun in Hai).

In other words, only people born in Bing, Wu or Ren years, with Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang in exactly Wu or Zi, have Xing Qiu Jia Yin.

What the classics say, and how Xingge differs

The section on noble patterns in volume one of the Quan Shu says:

Xing Qiu Jia Yin: Tian Xing and Lian Zhen together in the Body or Life Palace; it makes a person of martial courage.

This differs from Xingge's detection in two ways:

  • "Xing" is Tian Xing, not Qing Yang. is a small star of discipline and self-restraint. Many later practitioners read "Xing" as Qing Yang, and Xingge's detection uses Qing Yang too, because its force is more evident.
  • The classics limit it to the Body or Life Palace. Xingge's detection doesn't restrict the palace, and reads whichever palace it falls in.

The classics place it among the noble patterns, with the verdict "a person of martial courage." The Tai Wei Fu in volume one also mentions this combination, linking it to offices that administer punishment. The ancients read it plainly: suited to holding the blade and the seal, managing discipline and enforcing the law.

How to read it today

Each of the three stars brings a temperament:

  • Lian Zhen: strong principles and strong emotions, with a self-disciplined side.
  • Tian Xiang: fair, rule-minded and good at coordinating, like the person who stamps the seal.
  • Qing Yang: drive, meeting force with force, nerve.

Together, the common picture is: you follow the rules, and you dare to enforce them. Suitable stages include law, auditing, quality control, the military and police, compliance, project management, or any role where "someone has to step up and guard the line."

But the three stars also pull against each other: Tian Xiang wants to coordinate, Qing Yang wants to force things, and Lian Zhen, caught in between, swings emotionally. So Xingge's reading is: you have the nerve to enforce and to manage, and rules and temper easily pull at each other; setting out the rules clearly beats arguing about right and wrong afterward.

In different palaces

  • Life Palace: you are a person of principle yourself, strict with yourself and others; this is the most direct case of the classics' "martial courage."
  • Career Palace: work suits management, gatekeeping and enforcement roles.
  • Spouse Palace: in love you value commitment and rules, and in disagreements each side holds its ground.
  • Friends Palace: among your friends or colleagues are often people with strong principles and blunt tempers.

What makes it go more smoothly

  • Hua Lu, Hua Quan or Hua Ke in the same palace or the San Fang. Your nerve has resources behind it, and you are more easily seen as someone who can carry things.
  • Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui or Tian Yue present. When you enforce the rules, people stand on your side.
  • Watch for Lian Zhen taking Hua Ji. For people born in Bing years with Xing Qiu Jia Yin in Wu, Lian Zhen also takes Hua Ji, so the pull between principle and emotion is stronger, and setting out the rules clearly matters even more.

For Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang separately, see the lessons on Lian Zhen and Tan Lang and Wu Qu and Tian Xiang; Qing Yang is in the Six Malefic Stars lesson.

Common questions

What does Xing Qiu Jia Yin mean?

Xing is Qing Yang (Tian Xing in the original), Qiu is Lian Zhen, which transforms into Restraint, and Yin is Tian Xiang, which transforms into the Seal. With the three in one palace, the ancients read a combination suited to enforcing the law and managing discipline. The modern reading: principled and willing to guard the line, while watching the pull between rules and temper.

Is Xing Qiu Jia Yin a good or bad pattern?

The Quan Shu places it among the noble patterns with the verdict "a person of martial courage," so the ancients didn't see it as bad. It is a working style: following the rules and daring to enforce them. On the right stage, such as law, auditing or management, it is a strong advantage.

Why is it called "flanking" when the stars share a palace?

The ancients gave it the name, but the classics' own commentary says "together," meaning in the same palace. Xingge's detection follows that meaning: the three stars must sit in the same palace.

Who has Xing Qiu Jia Yin?

Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang only share a palace in Zi and Wu; Qing Yang lands in Wu for Bing or Wu years and in Zi for Ren years. So only people born in those three kinds of year, with Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang in exactly Wu or Zi, have it: about 1 chart in 35.
