Yang Tuo Jia Ji sounds heavy, and the Quan Shu bluntly calls it a "failing pattern." Taken apart, though, it describes something very concrete: the thing you can least let go of sits in a spot with someone blocking it on both sides, so the more you rush, the more it sticks. Knowing which palace it is in matters far more than knowing its name. To see whether you have it, draw your chart.

How Yang Tuo Jia Ji forms

Start with the fixed relationship between three stars. is the star of steady income; is always in the palace after Lu Cun, and always in the palace before it. Wherever Lu Cun goes, it is flanked by Qing Yang and Tuo Luo, which the ancients called . As the Lu Cun and Tian Ma lesson explains, Lu Cun is good at holding on, and for that reason finds it hard to let go.

So Yang Tuo Jia Ji really has only one condition: your birth-year lands in the palace with Lu Cun. As soon as Hua Ji enters, it is flanked by Qing Yang and Tuo Luo front and back.

Lu Cun's position and the star that takes Hua Ji are both set by the stem of your birth year, so you can look it up:

The stem follows the lunar year, so if you were born before Lunar New Year, use the previous year. If you aren't sure, use the birth-year transformations lookup.

The combination isn't rare: about 1 chart in 11 has Yang Tuo Jia Ji in some palace; in the Life Palace it is much rarer, about 1 in 120.

What the classics say

The original is in volume three of the Quan Shu:

Yang Tuo Jia Ji is a failing pattern.

The commentary's example has the Life Palace in Shen with Hua Ji, Qing Yang in You and Tuo Luo in Wei, squeezing it from both sides. By the table above, that is someone born in a Geng year with Tian Tong in the Life Palace in Shen taking Hua Ji. The Quan Shu also calls "Huo Xing and Ling Xing flanking the Life Palace" and "Di Jie and Di Kong flanking the Life Palace" failing patterns; they form a whole series.

When the ancients read flanking palaces, they looked at how the "neighbors on either side" affect the palace in the middle; the flanking palaces lesson covers this in full. Zuo Fu and You Bi flanking, or Wen Chang and Wen Qu flanking, is support; Qing Yang and Tuo Luo flanking is pressure. Hua Ji already marks where you care and can't let go, and with it squeezed between two stars that clash and drag, the ancients gave it this heavy name.

How to read it today

Layer the three stars' natures:

  • Hua Ji: this is something you care about deeply, put the most thought into, and get stuck on most easily. As the Hua Ji lesson says, Hua Ji isn't a bad thing; it is where you put the most of yourself in this life.
  • Qing Yang: meeting force with force, rushing to break through.
  • Tuo Luo: delay, going back and forth, getting tangled.

Put together, the common picture is this: on this matter, as soon as you feel pressed, you want to force your way through; when that doesn't work, you get dragged back; after a few rounds, you are more and more worn out. So Xingge reads Yang Tuo Jia Ji like this: the thing you can least let go of is in this palace, and the more you rush, the more it sticks; take it slowly and loosen it one step at a time.

In different palaces, the theme that gets stuck is different:

  • Life Palace: very high standards for yourself, and a tendency to be at odds with yourself.
  • Wealth Palace: particular pressure around money; even when you earn it, it often feels like not enough.
  • Spouse Palace: you care intensely in love, and tend to keep checking, and keep pulling back and forth.
  • Career Palace: stuck at the same hurdle at work for longer than you'd like; what helps is a different approach, not more force.

What loosens it

Yang Tuo Jia Ji doesn't decide everything on its own. These loosen it:

  • Auspicious stars such as Hua Lu, Hua Ke, Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui or Tian Yue in the same palace or the San Fang, so someone gives you a hand when you are stuck.
  • A bright Hua Ji star. Tai Yang in Yin and Tian Tong in Shen, for example, aren't dim; the strength is still there, it just needs pointing in the right direction.
  • When the Decade Luck or Annual Luck moves to other palaces, this palace's pressure isn't always in the foreground.

On the other hand, if this palace also has Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie, or Hua Ji clashes in from the opposite palace, more patience is needed.

How to check whether you have Yang Tuo Jia Ji

  1. Draw your chart and find which palace Lu Cun is in.
  2. See whether any star in that palace is marked "Ji."
  3. If one is, that palace's theme is where you most need to take things slowly.

If you do have it, the most useful approach is usually not more force but breaking the matter into small pieces and untying one section at a time.

Common questions

Is Yang Tuo Jia Ji serious?

The Quan Shu lists it as a "failing pattern," a heavy name, but it describes a spot where things get stuck easily, not an outcome. Hua Ji stands for what you care about most; flanked by Qing Yang and Tuo Luo, it means this matter can't be rushed, and forcing it tends to cause back-and-forth. Knowing which palace it is in and handling it slowly is far more useful than worrying about the name.

Is Yang Tuo Jia Ji always in the Life Palace?

No. It counts whenever your birth-year Hua Ji lands in the palace with Lu Cun, which can be any of the twelve. The classical example is the Life Palace, where its effect is most direct; in another palace, that palace's theme needs more patience. About 1 chart in 11 has it in some palace.

How do I know whether I'll have Yang Tuo Jia Ji?

Look at your birth-year stem: it decides which branch Lu Cun is in and which star takes Hua Ji. For someone born in a Geng year, for example, Lu Cun is in Shen and Tian Tong takes Hua Ji, so if Tian Tong happens to be in Shen, the pattern forms. Once you draw your chart, check whether the palace with Lu Cun has a star marked "Ji."

What is the difference between Yang Tuo Jia Ji and Yang Tuo Jia Lu?

Qing Yang and Tuo Luo always flank Lu Cun, so everyone's chart has Yang Tuo Jia Lu: Lu Cun holds on well and finds it harder to let go. Yang Tuo Jia Ji builds on that: Hua Ji also lands in the palace with Lu Cun, so the thing you care about is squeezed in the middle and the pressure is more concentrated.

A pattern is a bonus, not a verdict. On your own chart, the same pattern still depends on brightness, the San Fang Si Zheng and which Decade Luck you are in.
