What is Jun Chen Qing Hui (Emperor and Ministers Meet)?

Conditions

Zi Wei sits in the Life Palace, and both Zuo Fu and You Bi are in the Life Palace or its San Fang Si Zheng.

When you draw your chart, Xingge marks the patterns it contains.

Zi Wei is the emperor star, and the ancients said what it fears most is being a "lonely ruler" with nobody to rely on. Jun Chen Qing Hui (the ruler and ministers meet) is the opposite situation: Zi Wei sits in the Life Palace, and both of its helpers, Zuo Fu and You Bi, have arrived. The ruler has ministers and the ministers have a ruler, hence the "happy meeting." It is one of the most frequently mentioned noble patterns in Zi Wei Dou Shu. To see whether you have it, draw your chart and check whether Zi Wei is in your Life Palace.

The conditions for Jun Chen Qing Hui

The basic conditions are just two:

  • The main star in the Life Palace is Zi Wei (alone, or sharing the palace with Tian Fu, Tian Xiang, Tan Lang and so on).
  • Zuo Fu and You Bi must both be present.

The tricky part is what counts as "present." The section on noble patterns in volume one of the Quan Shu is strict:

Jun Chen Qing Hui is Zi Wei with Zuo Fu and You Bi guarding the Life Palace together; better still if it also meets Tian Xiang, Wu Qu and Tai Yin.

"Guarding the Life Palace together" means Zuo Fu and You Bi sit in the Life Palace with Zi Wei. Charts like that are rare: Zuo Fu counts forward from Chen by birth month and You Bi counts backward from Xu, so they only share a palace for people born in the fourth or tenth lunar month, and only in Chou or Wei; Zi Wei then has to happen to be in that palace too.

Most later practitioners read it more loosely: as long as Zuo Fu and You Bi are both within the Life Palace's , that is, among the Life Palace, the opposite Travel Palace and the two trine palaces (Wealth and Career), the pattern counts. Xingge's pattern detection uses this looser reading, so if your chart is marked Jun Chen Qing Hui, Zuo Fu and You Bi may be in the Life Palace, or may shine in from the Wealth or Career Palace. The strength differs: together in the Life Palace is strongest; shining in from the San Fang is next.

The second half of the original, "better still if it also meets Tian Xiang, Wu Qu and Tai Yin," is a bonus condition: the ancients said meeting those three in the San Fang is even better.

What the classics say, and how we read it today

The Tai Wei Fu in volume one of the Quan Shu needs only a few words:

When ruler and ministers meet, the talent can govern a state.

"Governing a state" meant running the country. The ancients meant this person has the ability to manage big affairs, and manage them well. Earlier in the same text is the line "Zuo Fu and You Bi flanking the emperor is of the highest grade": Zuo Fu and You Bi not in the Life Palace but on either side of Zi Wei were also highly valued. Read together, both lines make the same point: [Zi Wei](/star/ziwei) needs people to assist it before it can show what it can do.

Today, "governing a state" doesn't have to mean public office. A closer reading:

  • Suited to leading people. You have your own views, and you can find people willing to work with you. The bigger the team, the more room you have.
  • Able to fill the role. When pushed into a manager's, lead's or founder's seat, you often do better than expected.
  • Help comes naturally. Zuo Fu is steady support in the open; You Bi is goodwill and smoothing things over behind the scenes. With both present, you have help both visible and hidden.

and are the pair among the Six Auspicious Stars devoted to "having help," and that is what sets Jun Chen Qing Hui apart from other Zi Wei patterns: it isn't about how strong you are yourself, but about whether you have people around you.

Where people with Jun Chen Qing Hui tend to get stuck

A pattern is a bonus, not a guarantee. Jun Chen Qing Hui has two common blind spots:

First, getting too used to someone catching things. With plenty of helpers, it is easy to hand things off and have them taken care of, and over time your own grip on the details loosens. When the environment changes one day and those people aren't around, the gap shows.

Second, finding it hard to lose face. Zi Wei already cares about dignity, and with supporters all along the way, disagreement can feel like an insult. The people who use this pattern best are usually the kind of leader who lets their helpers finish speaking.

What weakens it

The ancients spoke of patterns being "broken": the conditions are all there, but another star pulls them down. Common ways Jun Chen Qing Hui is weakened:

  • Hua Ji, Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Di Kong or Di Jie in the Life Palace or its San Fang. The helpers are still there, but the process brings more friction and more back-and-forth.
  • Zuo Fu and You Bi only shine in from the San Fang, with no auspicious star in the Life Palace itself. Help exists, but it is more passive; you have to go and find it.
  • Zi Wei in Zi. Zi Wei has no Xian position, but in Zi its brightness only reaches Ping, so the emperor's footing is thinner, and however many helpers there are, coordinating them takes more effort.

A doesn't disappear; it means reading those stars in too. The lesson don't be boxed in by patterns is about exactly this.

How to check whether you have Jun Chen Qing Hui

  1. Draw your chart and see whether the main star in your Life Palace is Zi Wei.
  2. Find which palaces Zuo Fu and You Bi are in.
  3. Check whether those are among the Life, Travel, Wealth and Career Palaces. If both are, you have Jun Chen Qing Hui; if only one is, you have help but not the full pattern.

If Zi Wei is in the Life Palace but its San Fang has none of Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui or Tian Yue, that is what the ancients called a "lonely ruler": used to carrying everything yourself, and the road widens a lot once you learn to delegate. Common questions

Do Zuo Fu and You Bi both have to be in the Life Palace?

The Quan Shu defines it as "Zi Wei with Zuo Fu and You Bi guarding the Life Palace together," meaning all three stars in the Life Palace. Most later practitioners read it more loosely: Zuo Fu and You Bi both within the Life Palace's San Fang Si Zheng is enough. Together in the Life Palace is strongest; shining in from the San Fang is next.

Is Jun Chen Qing Hui the best pattern?

It is a noble pattern listed in the classics' section on noble patterns, and its point is "having people to assist you, and being able to lead." But a pattern is only part of a chart: you still need to look at whether the San Fang has Hua Ji or challenging stars, how bright Zi Wei is, and which Decade Luck you are in. Not having this pattern doesn't mean you can't be a leader.

What is the difference between Jun Chen Qing Hui and a lonely ruler?

Both have Zi Wei in the Life Palace. Jun Chen Qing Hui has Zuo Fu and You Bi present, with people to rely on; a lonely ruler has none of the Six Auspicious Stars in the San Fang and is used to doing everything alone. The difference isn't ability but how things get done: one relies on a team, the other on themselves.

How common is Jun Chen Qing Hui?

Not very. Under the loose reading (Zuo Fu and You Bi anywhere in the San Fang Si Zheng), about 1 chart in 50 has it; under the Quan Shu's strict definition (both in the Life Palace with Zi Wei), about 1 in 600. So when someone says they have Jun Chen Qing Hui, it's fair to ask whether Zuo Fu and You Bi are in the Life Palace or shining in from the San Fang.

Does it count if Zi Wei isn't in the Life Palace?

By the classical definition, no. Jun Chen Qing Hui describes the Life Palace, so Zi Wei has to sit there. Zi Wei in another palace meeting Zuo Fu and You Bi means that palace's affairs have help and weight, but it isn't called Jun Chen Qing Hui.

A pattern is a bonus, not a verdict. On your own chart, the same pattern still depends on brightness, the San Fang Si Zheng and which Decade Luck you are in.
