What is Shi Zhong Yin Yu (Jade Hidden in Stone)?
Conditions
Ju Men sits alone in the Life Palace, with the Life Palace in Zi or Wu.
When you draw your chart, Xingge marks the patterns it contains.
In the classics Ju Men "transforms into the Hidden" and is often called the star of disputes. But Ju Men also has a beautiful pattern: Shi Zhong Yin Yu (jade hidden in stone). With Ju Men in the Life Palace in Zi or Wu, talent is like jade wrapped in rock: unremarkable on the outside, valuable once polished. To see whether you have it, draw your chart.
The conditions for Shi Zhong Yin Yu
The condition is: the Life Palace is in Zi or Wu, and its only main star is Ju Men.
In Zi and Wu, Ju Men always sits alone, at Wang. The Travel Palace opposite holds Tian Ji. By this condition, about 1 chart in 70 has it.
Volume one of the Quan Shu has a dedicated passage on Shi Zhong Yin Yu, with the same definition as Xingge's detection:
It is Ju Men met in the Life Palace in Zi or Wu.
What the classics say
Later in the same passage is a poem:
Ju Men met in the palaces of Zi and Wu: in the Body or Life Palace, sure to bring honor; with Hua Ke and Hua Lu shining from the San Fang, the jade hidden in stone is rich indeed.
The Gu Sui Fu also says:
Ju Men in Zi or Wu, jade hidden in stone; with visible and hidden Lu, flowers added to brocade.
Both make the same point: the pattern is complete when Hua Lu or Hua Ke shines in from the San Fang. The commentary in volume three is more specific:
People of Xin and Gui years are the highest grade; people of Ding and Ji years come next.
Why Xin and Gui? The four transformations explain it: in Xin years Ju Men takes Hua Lu, and in Gui years Ju Men takes Hua Quan, so the Ju Men in the Life Palace lights itself up. In Ding years Ju Men takes Hua Ji, which is why the ancients put it a grade lower.
How to read it today
Ju Men's nature is eloquence, analysis, doubt and digging deep: it always wants to know why. In Zi or Wu, a closer reading:
- Talent that needs time to polish. Your strengths usually aren't obvious at first glance; it takes a few years of building before they are seen. Rushing to stand out can get you taken for someone who just likes to argue.
- Suited to research and expertise. Lawyer, researcher, analyst, journalist, teacher, consultant, engineer: work that needs digging into detail and persuading people is where Ju Men shines.
- Your words carry weight. What you say after thinking it through often hits the point in a single sentence.
The word "hidden" is the key: building quietly works better than rushing to show what you can do.
Where Shi Zhong Yin Yu tends to get stuck
First, doubt before trust. Ju Men wants everything clear first. The upside is that you are hard to fool; the downside is that it takes a long time to feel sure about people and things, and opportunities sometimes slip away while you doubt.
Second, speaking too bluntly. Being accurate doesn't mean people will listen. The same content, said differently, lands very differently.
Third, feeling unseen. While the jade is still inside the stone is when it's easiest to doubt yourself. What to do during this time is keep polishing, not prove yourself.
What weakens it
- Ju Men taking Hua Ji in Ding years. What you care about most sits in the Life Palace, and speaking and communicating get stuck especially easily.
- Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing in the same palace as Ju Men. The classics rate this very low; the modern reading is that analytical sharpness turns cutting, friction over words increases, and it pays to pause a beat before speaking.
- No Hua Lu or Hua Ke at all in the San Fang. The jade is still there, but without the push that gets it seen, so you need to put more time into building it yourself.
On the other hand, Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, Wen Chang or Wen Qu in the San Fang is what the classics call "flowers added to brocade."
How to check whether you have Shi Zhong Yin Yu
- Draw your chart and see whether your Life Palace is in Zi or Wu.
- Check whether its only main star is Ju Men.
- Then look at your birth-year stem: Xin and Gui years are the classics' highest grade. You can confirm with the birth-year transformations lookup.
Ju Men's full personality is in its star introduction, and its relationship with Tian Tong is in the Tian Tong and Ju Men lesson.
Common questions
What does Shi Zhong Yin Yu mean?
Ju Men in the Life Palace in Zi or Wu, like jade hidden in stone: unremarkable outside, valuable once polished. Volume one of the Quan Shu has a passage on it, defining it as "Ju Men met in the Life Palace in Zi or Wu"; with Hua Lu or Hua Ke shining in from the San Fang, it is more complete.
Is Shi Zhong Yin Yu a late bloomer?
It is often read that way. Ju Men's talent is analysis and depth, which takes time to build before it's noticed, so when young you often feel undervalued, and you truly shine only after some years of polishing. Building quietly works better than rushing to stand out.
Why are Xin and Gui years best?
In Xin years Ju Men takes Hua Lu, and in Gui years Hua Quan, so the Ju Men in the Life Palace is lit up by the transformations itself. Volume three of the Quan Shu says "people of Xin and Gui years are the highest grade; people of Ding and Ji years come next." In Ding years Ju Men takes Hua Ji, so it comes later.
Is there Shi Zhong Yin Yu with Ju Men outside Zi and Wu?
No. Shi Zhong Yin Yu only covers Zi and Wu. With Ju Men in the Life Palace elsewhere, read it by Ju Men's own brightness and the stars it shares the palace with; Ju Men in Chen or Xu is at Xian, for example, and with Tian Tong or Tai Yang it is a different combination.
Other patterns
A pattern is a bonus, not a verdict. On your own chart, the same pattern still depends on brightness, the San Fang Si Zheng and which Decade Luck you are in.
