Tian Ji is the strategist; Tian Liang is the elder. With the two together, one does the thinking and the other guards the line, and the ancients gave the combination a weighty name: Shan Yin Chao Gang (goodness and shelter uphold the order of court). "Goodness" is Tian Ji's transformation nature, "shelter" is Tian Liang's, and "the order of court" means the principles that keep a government running. To see whether you have it, draw your chart.

The conditions for Shan Yin Chao Gang

  • The main stars in the Life Palace are exactly Tian Ji and Tian Liang.
  • The Life Palace is in Chen or Xu.

Tian Ji and Tian Liang only share a palace in Chen and Xu, so the two conditions are one. In these positions Tian Liang is at Miao and Tian Ji at Li, so Tian Liang's steadiness holds firmer than Tian Ji's changeability. About 1 chart in 70 has it.

What the classics say, and how we read it today

The Tai Wei Fu in volume one of the Quan Shu says:

Goodness and shelter uphold the order of court: an elder of kindness.

Meaning this person is generous at heart, can look after people and can also keep to the rules: the elder of the group. Volume three adds two lines:

Tian Ji and Tian Liang together are good at discussing strategy; in Xu, too, it is well regarded.
Tian Ji and Tian Liang guarding the Life Palace, with auspicious stars added: wealth, standing and kindness.

"Good at discussing strategy" means very good at analyzing situations and coming up with plans, like an armchair strategist; "in Xu, too, it is well regarded" is a specific reminder that Xu is just as good. Volume one's verse on stars well placed in the twelve palaces also has the line "Tian Ji and Tian Liang in the Life Palace at Chen," listing this position as a good pattern.

Taking the two stars apart:

  • [Tian Ji](/star/tianji) transforms into Goodness: a quick mind, plenty of ideas, good at planning.
  • [Tian Liang](/star/tianliang) transforms into Shelter: caring, principled, and often finding a way out of trouble.

Together, it is someone who "thinks things through and holds their ground." Today, common stages for Shan Yin Chao Gang are:

  • Consulting, advisory and strategy. Seeing a situation clearly and advising others is what this pair does best.
  • Education, law, healthcare and social services. Work that needs both expertise and principle.
  • The anchor of an organization. Not necessarily the top seat, but the person everyone asks first when something happens.

Where Shan Yin Chao Gang tends to get stuck

First, more talk than action. "Good at discussing strategy" is a strength and also a warning: the analysis is impeccable, but when it is time to act, you hesitate. Tian Ji overthinks and Tian Liang loves to guard the line; neither is a charger.

Second, lecturing. Tian Liang has an elder's temperament and can't help pointing out others' mistakes; Tian Ji thinks things through thoroughly, so the reminders come point by point. Good intentions repeated too often come across as nagging.

Third, thinking too far ahead. Tian Ji loves to plan and Tian Liang to look after the big picture, so you often worry about things that haven't happened yet.

Volume three has another warning: Tian Ji and Tian Liang shining on each other and also meeting Di Kong and Di Jie, the ancients said, lean toward monks and Daoists. In today's terms: unconventional thinking, a lighter interest in worldly success, and better suited to inward paths like research, religion or philosophy.

What strengthens it and what weakens it

  • Strengthens: Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui, Tian Yue, or Hua Lu, Hua Quan or Hua Ke in the San Fang. The classics say "with auspicious stars added: wealth, standing and kindness": with people and resources, the strategist has a lord to serve.
  • Weakens: Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Hua Ji, or Di Kong and Di Jie in the San Fang. Plenty of ideas but hard to bring down to earth, so find a partner who can make the call.

Tian Ji and Tian Liang both belong to the group, and people with Shan Yin Chao Gang usually carry that rhythm of "building up slowly within a system" too; see also Ji Yue Tong Liang.
