What is Yue Lang Tian Men (Moon Bright at Heaven's Gate)?
Conditions
Tai Yin sits alone in the Life Palace, with the Life Palace in Hai.
When you draw your chart, Xingge marks the patterns it contains.
Tai Yin is the moon, the light of the night. On a chart, Tai Yin is brightest in Hai, Zi and Chou, and of these, Hai lies in the northwest, which the ancients called the "heavenly gate." The moon hanging at the heavenly gate is Yue Lang Tian Men (the moon bright at the heavenly gate). It is one of Tai Yin's most highly regarded positions, and the classics rate it very well. To see whether you have it, draw your chart.
The conditions for Yue Lang Tian Men
The condition is: the Life Palace is in Hai, and its only main star is Tai Yin.
In Hai, Tai Yin always sits alone, at Miao. By this condition, about 1 chart in 110 has it.
The main stars move together, so a Yue Lang Tian Men chart has a few fixed features:
- The Travel Palace opposite (Si) holds Tian Ji.
- Tai Yang is always in Mao with Tian Liang, shining into the Life Palace from the trine, also at Miao.
So people with Yue Lang Tian Men always have both the sun and the moon bright in the Life Palace's San Fang, which is also Ri Yue Bing Ming.
Volume three of the Quan Shu adds one more condition:
The moon bright at the heavenly gate, in Hai, rises to high office and holds great power. Born in Zi years and at night, it fits the pattern. If not noble, then greatly wealthy.
"Born at night, it fits the pattern" means a night birth is fully qualified. The moon is the light of the night, and people born at night connect best with it. Xingge's detection doesn't depend on birth time and marks daytime births too; by the classics, night births have the fullest strength.
What the classics say, and how we read it today
The section on noble patterns in volume one says:
The moon setting in Hai: the moon in Hai guarding the Life Palace, also called the moon bright at the heavenly gate.
The Gu Sui Fu pairs it with the sun:
The sun shining on the thunder gate: wealth, standing and glory. The moon bright at the heavenly gate: rank and a lordship.
The commentary's last line, "if not noble, then greatly wealthy," is interesting: the ancients felt this pattern goes either toward rank or toward wealth, with at least one of the two. In the classics Tai Yin is "the ruler of the Property Palace," and later writers say it transforms into Riches, so it has always been tied to accumulation, family assets and security.
Today, a closer reading of Yue Lang Tian Men:
- Refined, with a sense of quality. Sensitive to beauty, atmosphere and detail; what you make often has a quiet polish.
- Quiet prosperity. Not overnight riches, but saving, choosing well and holding for the long term, slowly building a foundation.
- Suited to work that needs care and taste. Design, content, finance, property, caregiving, research and the arts: stages that call for patience and sensitivity.
Where Yue Lang Tian Men tends to get stuck
First, thinking a lot and saying little. Tai Yin feels deeply but often keeps it inside. Others don't know what you care about, and you feel they should understand.
Second, valuing security too much. The moon only shines at night; people with Tai Yin are at their best in familiar surroundings and tend to shrink back somewhere new.
Third, emotional ups and downs. The moon waxes and wanes, and so do Tai Yin people's moods. Knowing your own rhythm is more practical than forcing yourself to be the same every day.
What weakens it
- Tai Yin taking Hua Ji in Yi years. The brightest moon gains a layer of worry, often about home, money or security.
- Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing in the same palace as Tai Yin. Refinement turns into sensitivity, with more collisions or dragging.
- Di Kong or Di Jie in the Life Palace. Beautiful ideas that easily come to nothing when it's time to carry them out.
On the other hand, Tai Yin taking Hua Lu in Ding years, Hua Quan in Wu years, and Hua Ke in Geng and Gui years all push the moon brighter.
How to check whether you have Yue Lang Tian Men
- Draw your chart and see whether your Life Palace is in Hai.
- Check whether its only main star is Tai Yin.
- Then see whether you were born at night to know whether it is the classics' full version.
Tai Yin in the Life Palace in Zi with Tian Tong is a different pattern, Shui Cheng Gui E. For Tai Yin's full personality, see its star introduction.
