What is Gu Jun (Lonely Emperor)?
Conditions
Zi Wei sits in the Life Palace, and the Life Palace's San Fang Si Zheng has none of the six auspicious stars: Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui or Tian Yue.
When you draw your chart, Xingge marks the patterns it contains.
Zi Wei is the emperor star, and half of an emperor's weight comes from itself, half from the people around it. Gu Jun (the lonely ruler) is about the second half being empty: Zi Wei sits in the Life Palace, yet there isn't a single helper star in its San Fang Si Zheng. It is the opposite extreme of Jun Chen Qing Hui. To see which you are, draw your chart and check whether Zi Wei is in your Life Palace.
The conditions for Gu Jun
Xingge's detection looks at two things:
- The main star in the Life Palace is Zi Wei, alone or with Tian Fu, Tian Xiang, Tan Lang, Po Jun or Qi Sha.
- None of the Six Auspicious Stars are in the Life Palace's San Fang Si Zheng: Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui and Tian Yue are all absent from the Life, Travel, Wealth and Career Palaces.
The condition isn't broad: about 1 chart in 50-odd has it.
The Quan Shu is actually more direct and only looks at Zuo Fu and You Bi:
Without Zuo Fu and You Bi traveling with it, it is a lonely ruler: even fine jade falls short.
By the classics, as long as Zuo Fu and You Bi don't arrive, it is a lonely ruler; Xingge also counts Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui and Tian Yue as helpers and only marks it when all six are missing, so the charts it marks are a narrower set than the classics'. Elsewhere in volume one is another version, which looks at Tian Xiang:
With Tian Xiang it is useful; without Tian Xiang it is a lonely ruler.
Tian Xiang is the "seal star," like a chief minister; only with Tian Xiang beside it does Zi Wei have someone to carry out its will. Put the two together and the meaning is the same: the emperor needs someone to take things on.
What the classics say, and how we read it today
"Even fine jade falls short" is a very precise phrase: the jade is still jade, Zi Wei's scale, opinions and sense of responsibility are all there, it just lacks the setting that lets it shine. Volume one also says Zi Wei "depends entirely on the work of Zuo Fu and You Bi": Zi Wei is a star built to be assisted.
Today, people with Gu Jun commonly look like this:
- Carrying everything yourself. Not that you don't want to find people, but you are used to doing it yourself because it's faster, and over time you end up holding all of it.
- Strong opinions, reluctant to ask. Asking someone for help can feel more tiring than just finishing the job.
- Able to fill the role, but often alone in it. As a manager or lead, you get the work done well, but the team doesn't always keep up.
The Zi Wei and Tian Fu lesson uses a comparison: a very capable manager with nobody under them has to do everything alone, until everyone finds them hard to work with and the manager finds everyone unreliable. Gu Jun often gets stuck in that loop.
Where Gu Jun tends to get stuck
First, exhaustion. Everything passes through your hands, and when the volume grows you can't keep up. People with Gu Jun rarely say they're tired; often they hold on until one day they suddenly don't want to do it anymore.
Second, being hard to approach. You are used to judging and deciding for yourself, so others can't get a hand in, and don't dare come close. It isn't that the people around you won't help; they don't know how.
Third, treating delegation as losing control. When something handed over isn't done as well as you'd do it, you can't help taking it back. After a few times, nobody is willing to take things on any more.
What makes it easier
Gu Jun isn't final. These loosen it:
- Hua Lu, Hua Quan or Hua Ke shining into the Life Palace. Fewer people, but resources or reputation behind you, so you can still make your way alone.
- A companion main star that brings help. Zi Wei with Tian Fu has a treasury to guard; Zi Wei with Tian Xiang has a star whose very role is to help.
- A Decade Luck in palaces with the Six Auspicious Stars. In those ten years there are noticeably more people around you, the best time to practice delegating.
On the other hand, if the Life Palace's San Fang also has Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Di Kong, Di Jie or Hua Ji, the classics say "the gentleman is out in the wilds, the small-minded hold office." In modern terms: fewer reliable people around you and more who pull you about, so choose people more carefully.
How to check whether you have Gu Jun
- Draw your chart and see whether the main star in your Life Palace is Zi Wei.
- List the stars in the Life, Travel, Wealth and Career Palaces.
- With none of the Six Auspicious Stars, it is Gu Jun; with one or two, you have some help but not much; with both Zuo Fu and You Bi, it is Jun Chen Qing Hui.
One direction for people with Gu Jun: rather than waiting for helpers to appear, choose one or two people yourself and start by handing them small things. What Zi Wei fears most isn't having nobody; it is having people and not daring to use them.
Common questions
Is Gu Jun a bad pattern?
Gu Jun means Zi Wei in the Life Palace without helpers; it is about how you work, not how capable you are. People with it have strong opinions and a strong sense of responsibility, and can do a lot well on their own. What to watch is that carrying it all yourself for a long time is tiring, and makes it hard for the people around you to get involved.
What is the difference between Gu Jun and Jun Chen Qing Hui?
Both have Zi Wei in the Life Palace. Jun Chen Qing Hui has both Zuo Fu and You Bi present, with people to rely on; Gu Jun has none of the Six Auspicious Stars in the San Fang and is used to doing everything alone. One relies on a team, the other on itself.
What work suits people with Gu Jun?
Work you can complete independently with clear responsibility, such as professional consulting, technical expertise, independent creative work or running your own practice. If you lead a team, what most needs practice is delegation: hand over small things first and give people the chance to prove themselves.
Is the classics' Gu Jun the same as the one Xingge marks?
Not quite. The Quan Shu says "without Zuo Fu and You Bi traveling with it, it is a lonely ruler," looking only at those two; Xingge only marks it when all six auspicious stars are absent from the San Fang Si Zheng, a narrower set. So people whose chart isn't marked Gu Jun, but who have neither Zuo Fu nor You Bi there, count as lonely rulers by the classics' standard.
Other patterns
A pattern is a bonus, not a verdict. On your own chart, the same pattern still depends on brightness, the San Fang Si Zheng and which Decade Luck you are in.
