What is Shou Xing Ru Miao (Longevity Star in Its Temple)?
Conditions
Tian Liang sits alone in the Life Palace, with the Life Palace in Wu.
When you draw your chart, Xingge marks the patterns it contains.
In the classics Tian Liang is the "sheltering star" and also the "longevity star": caring for people, holding to principles, and often finding a way out when trouble comes. Tian Liang in the Life Palace in Wu is at Miao, so later writers call it Shou Xing Ru Miao (the longevity star at Miao). To see whether you have it, draw your chart.
The conditions for Shou Xing Ru Miao
The condition is: the Life Palace is in Wu, and its only main star is Tian Liang.
In Wu, Tian Liang always sits alone. By this condition, about 1 chart in 120 has it.
The main stars move together, so a Shou Xing Ru Miao chart has a few fixed features:
- The Travel Palace opposite (Zi) holds Tai Yang, at Xian in Zi.
- One trine holds Tian Ji and Tai Yin, the other Tian Tong.
Tian Ji, Tai Yin, Tian Tong and Tian Liang are all in the Life Palace's San Fang, so Shou Xing Ru Miao is always Ji Yue Tong Liang as well. That also explains its character: steady, caring, and at its best within a system.
The name "Shou Xing Ru Miao" was given by later astrology books; the Quan Shu has no pattern by this name. But the Quan Shu clearly says Tian Liang is the longevity star, and describes Tian Liang in Wu favorably.
What the classics say
When volume two introduces Tian Liang, it opens with:
Tian Liang belongs to earth, a Southern Dipper star that transforms into Shelter; it is the longevity star.
The Gu Sui Fu says:
Liang in Wu: an official's standing, pure and distinguished.
Volume three says more:
Tian Liang in Wu: an official's standing, pure and distinguished at court. People of Ding, Ji and Gui years fit the pattern.
"An official's standing, pure and distinguished" means honorable and well regarded in public life. Another line in volume three also singles out Wu:
Tian Liang guarding or shining with the auspicious stars: blessings and long life all one's days; best of all in Wu.
As for Ding, Ji and Gui: in Ding and Ji years Lu Cun is in Wu, sitting with Tian Liang; in Ji years Tian Liang takes Hua Ke; in Gui years Lu Cun is in Zi, shining in from opposite. Each adds resources to the Life Palace.
How to read it today
Tian Liang's nature is care, principle and reasoning. At its brightest, a closer reading:
- An elder's steadiness and sense of responsibility. Even when young, you are often treated as someone to consult. When others hit a problem, you are the first person they think of.
- Suited to work that looks after people and guards standards. Healthcare, social work, education, law, public service, consulting, risk management and quality control: roles where you think of others while holding the line on principles.
- Trouble often takes a turn for the better. Tian Liang transforms into Shelter, meaning cover and protection. Put in modern terms: you can steady a situation in hard times, and you tend to get help at key moments.
The name "longevity star" makes people think of a long life, but the pattern describes character and how you handle the world, not a prediction about health.
Where Shou Xing Ru Miao tends to get stuck
First, lecturing. Tian Liang holds to principles and loves giving advice; good intentions repeated too often become pressure. Not everyone wants to be looked after.
Second, being too mature too early. Steady from a young age is reliable, but you may take fewer risks and try fewer things.
Third, the dim Tai Yang opposite. Tai Yang in the Travel Palace is in the dark, meaning you give a lot out in the world without necessarily being seen. Keep a record of what you contribute, and speak up when it's time to ask for something.
What weakens it
- Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing in the Life Palace. The steady foundation gets collisions or dragging, and looking after people turns into managing them too much.
- Hua Ji in the San Fang. For example, Tai Yin taking Hua Ji in Yi years, Tian Ji in Wu years, or Tian Tong in Geng years: one of the Ji Yue Tong Liang stars is held back, adding worry to the San Fang.
- Di Kong or Di Jie in the Life Palace. Many things you want to take care of, which easily come to nothing in practice.
On the other hand, Tian Liang taking Hua Ke in Ji years or Hua Lu in Ren years lights up the Tian Liang in the Life Palace directly, and Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang or Wen Qu in the San Fang all add to it.
How to check whether you have Shou Xing Ru Miao
- Draw your chart and see whether your Life Palace is in Wu.
- Check whether its only main star is Tian Liang.
- Then look at your birth-year stem: Ding, Ji and Gui are the years the classics name.
Tian Liang's full personality is in its star introduction, and its relationship with Tian Ji is in the Tian Ji and Tian Liang lesson.
