What is Sha Po Lang (Killings, Breaker, Wolf)?
Conditions
The Life Palace's main stars include Qi Sha, Po Jun or Tan Lang. The three always sit in trine with one another, so when one is in the Life Palace, the other two shine in from the San Fang.
When you draw your chart, Xingge marks the patterns it contains.
Sha Po Lang is probably the most famous group of stars in Zi Wei Dou Shu: Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang. Many people hear the name and assume a life without stability, but what it describes is a rhythm: big swings, never sitting still, with change as fuel. Put to the right use, that same rhythm is the power to create. To see whether you have it, draw your chart and check which star sits in your Life Palace.
The conditions for Sha Po Lang
There is only one condition: the main stars in the Life Palace include Qi Sha, Po Jun or Tan Lang.
The distances between these three stars are fixed: they always sit in each other's trine positions. So whenever one is in the Life Palace, the other two are always in the Wealth and Career Palaces, and the Life Palace's San Fang Si Zheng naturally holds the whole Sha Po Lang set.
Because the condition is broad, Sha Po Lang is very common: roughly 1 chart in 4 has it. Each of the three stars brings its own color:
- [Qi Sha](/star/qisha) in the Life Palace: the general. Willing to make the call, with a sprinter's rhythm.
- [Po Jun](/star/pojun) in the Life Palace: the demolisher. If it isn't right, tear it down and start over; break first, then build.
- [Tan Lang](/star/tanlang) in the Life Palace: the player. Many interests, well liked, and wanting a lot.
Sha Po Lang stars also often share a palace with Zi Wei, Wu Qu or Lian Zhen, as in Zi Wei with Qi Sha, Wu Qu with Po Jun, or Lian Zhen with Tan Lang. The companion star gives the drive a direction: Zi Wei gives it scale, Wu Qu points it at money and practical matters, and Lian Zhen gives it principles and strong feeling.
What the classics say, and how we read it today
The Gu Sui Fu in volume one of the Quan Shu says:
Qi Sha and Po Jun should go out into the world; Ji Yue Tong Liang makes officials and clerks.
The two halves are written as a contrast: Sha Po Lang goes out and breaks ground, while Ji Yue Tong Liang works within the system. "Going out" in ancient times meant leaving home to make your way; today it reads as moving around, switching tracks and opening new ground, all of which suit you better than staying put.
The phrase "Sha Po Lang" itself also appears in volume two, on Zi Wei entering a Decade Luck:
The only fear is Sha Po Lang in the San Fang.
Meaning that in a period whose San Fang is all Sha Po Lang, changes come especially thick and fast. The ancients feared instability, but for many people today, instability is exactly where the opportunity is.
The Tai Wei Fu has another line:
Qi Sha and Po Jun rely entirely on the ferocity of Qing Yang and Ling Xing.
Meaning that when Qi Sha and Po Jun meet challenging stars like Qing Yang and Ling Xing, their force is amplified. At best that is nerve; at worst, recklessness.
Today, a closer reading of Sha Po Lang:
- Suited to work with variety. Sales, entrepreneurship, projects, new business development, media, international work, the military, police and firefighting, sport: stages that call for adapting and breaking new ground are where Sha Po Lang shines.
- Life has a few big turns. Changing jobs, cities or fields is normal for people with Sha Po Lang, and every turn can be the start of the next chapter.
- The more pressure, the sharper you get. Too long in a quiet life feels stifling; you are at your best when there is a challenge.
Where Sha Po Lang tends to get stuck
First, charging too fast and not finishing. Strong at the start, then wanting to move on at seventy or eighty percent. Having someone help you wrap things up, or setting yourself a "finish before switching" rule, makes a big difference.
Second, leaving no way back. Qi Sha stakes everything and Po Jun tears down first and thinks later. The habit of putting all your resources in at once is explosive power when things go well, and does a lot of damage in one go when they don't. Before each turn, think through whether you could withstand the worst case.
Third, a weaker sense of building up. With constant change, seniority and reputation are harder to stack. You can let people be what accumulates: from every chapter, keep a few people you trust, and your next start won't be from zero.
What strengthens it, and what to watch
- Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui or Tian Yue in the San Fang: there are resources to catch your drive, so change turns into results more easily.
- Qi Sha and Po Jun at Miao or Wang, as in Qi Sha Chao Dou and Ying Xing Ru Miao: the drive has direction.
- Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing in the same palace, or Hua Ji in the San Fang: change comes more abruptly, so pause a little longer before deciding.
How to check whether you have Sha Po Lang
- Draw your chart and look at the main stars in your Life Palace.
- If one of them is Qi Sha, Po Jun or Tan Lang, you are on the Sha Po Lang line.
- Then see which one it is and what it shares the palace with, to read your version.
The full division into three star groups is in the three great star groups lesson, and the difference between Qi Sha and Po Jun is in the Qi Sha and Po Jun lesson.
Common questions
Is Sha Po Lang a bad chart?
No. Sha Po Lang describes a rhythm of big changes and a love of opening new ground. The Quan Shu says "Qi Sha and Po Jun should go out into the world," meaning you do better venturing out. Its challenges are charging too fast and leaving no way back, not bad fortune. Many entrepreneurs and top salespeople are on this line.
What work suits Sha Po Lang?
Work with variety that calls for adapting, such as sales, entrepreneurship, project management, new business development, media, international work, the military, police and firefighting, and sport. Repetitive, unchanging work tends to feel stifling to people with Sha Po Lang.
How common is Sha Po Lang?
Very common: about 1 chart in 4. Because Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang always sit in trine with one another, whenever one is in the Life Palace, the other two shine in from the San Fang.
Does Sha Po Lang mean you have to start a business?
Not necessarily. People with Sha Po Lang handle the upheaval of starting from zero better than most, but the same sprinting energy works just as well opening a new department or running a new project inside a company. The point is to find a role with variety and challenge, not necessarily to be your own boss.

A pattern is a bonus, not a verdict. On your own chart, the same pattern still depends on brightness, the San Fang Si Zheng and which Decade Luck you are in.
