What is Kong Ku (Empty Treasury)?
Conditions
Tian Fu shares a palace with Di Kong or Di Jie.
When you draw your chart, Xingge marks the patterns it contains.
Tian Fu is the treasury star: steady, good at holding on, and at ease only when there is something to guard. The classics call it outright "the treasury of income." Kong Ku (the empty treasury) describes this treasury meeting Di Kong or Di Jie: the treasury is still there, but what's inside is easily taken away. It isn't rare: about 1 chart in 7 has it in some palace. To see where your Tian Fu is, draw your chart.
How Kong Ku forms
The condition is: Tian Fu shares a palace with Di Kong or Di Jie; either one is enough.
Tian Fu's position mirrors Zi Wei's and is set by the lunar day of birth and the Five Elements Bureau; Di Kong and Di Jie are set by the birth hour, starting from Hai, Di Jie counting forward and Di Kong backward. When the two positions happen to overlap, that is Kong Ku. In the Life Palace it is less common, about 1 in 75.
What the classics say
The name "empty treasury" isn't original to the Quan Shu; it is a later term, based on how the Quan Shu describes Tian Fu. The chapter in volume one on what Tian Fu rules says:
Tian Fu is the treasury of income; meeting it in the Life Palace, one is wealthy in the end.
The same chapter also says:
If it meets voidness, it stands alone.
Meaning Tian Fu meeting voidness is like a treasury standing alone and empty. The classics mean "voidness" of the Jie Kong and Xun Kong kind; later writers extended the same idea to Di Kong and Di Jie: what a treasury fears most is being empty.
As the Zi Wei and Tian Fu lesson explains, when Tian Fu meets Lu Cun or Hua Lu and has something in the treasury, it is relaxed; meeting Di Kong or Di Jie, it tends to grow anxious and grip tight.
How to read it today
Tian Fu's nature is to keep; Di Kong and Di Jie's nature is to leak. Together, the common picture is:
- The more you try to hold on, the less you can. Tian Fu cares a lot about reserves, yet there are often unexpected expenses and investments that never come back.
- Your sense of security drains more easily than the numbers. The account isn't necessarily low, but it never feels like enough.
- More ideas than other Tian Fu. Di Kong and Di Jie also stand for inspiration and unconventional paths, so this treasury sometimes wants to do something unconservative, with bigger wins and losses either way.
Xingge's reading: what you can hold on to is easily drained; keeping a reserve you never touch matters more than earning more.
In different palaces
- Life Palace: you are the steward type yourself, but your sense of security is especially easily shaken.
- Wealth Palace: closest to the original meaning of an empty treasury; you need an account you never touch, whatever happens. Read it together with Tian Fu in the Wealth Palace.
- Property Palace: home and property are harder to hold on to, with moves and renovations often over budget.
- Career Palace: the results of your work are easily diluted, so keep clear records of credit and resources.
Kong Ku versus an "exposed treasury"
Later writers also speak of an "exposed treasury": Tian Fu meeting challenging stars such as Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing, so the treasury door is opened and its contents are on display. An empty treasury is drained from inside; an exposed one has its door opened. Both say Tian Fu fears challenging stars. Xingge currently only marks the Di Kong and Di Jie kind, because those two are most directly about "emptiness."
What loosens it
- Lu Cun or Hua Lu in the same palace or the San Fang. Something keeps flowing into the treasury, so losing some isn't frightening.
- Only one of Di Kong and Di Jie. One alone is lighter than both.
- Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui or Tian Yue present. Someone helps you guard the treasury.
The practical approach is similar to Lu Feng Kong Jie: as soon as income arrives, move a portion somewhere untouched. What Tian Fu needs most is a floor; with that in place, the rest of the money can be used freely. Di Kong's and Di Jie's personalities are in the Six Malefic Stars lesson.
Common questions
What does Tian Fu's empty treasury mean?
Tian Fu shares a palace with Di Kong or Di Jie. Tian Fu is the treasury star and Di Kong and Di Jie stand for coming to nothing and wearing away, so together what you can hold on to is easily drained. The modern reading: keeping a reserve you never touch matters more than chasing more income.
Is "empty treasury" a term from the Quan Shu?
"Empty treasury" is a term later practitioners use. The Quan Shu calls Tian Fu "the treasury of income" and says Tian Fu "meeting voidness stands alone"; later writers extended the idea to Di Kong and Di Jie, which is where the term comes from.
Does Tian Fu's empty treasury mean having no money?
No. It says resources in that area slip away more easily and your sense of security is more easily shaken, not how much you earn. Many people with it earn well; they just need steadier saving habits and a reserve fund they never touch.
