Practitioners often say that Tai Yang at Xian in Hai or Zi is like the sun after it has set, and Tai Yin at Xian in Mao, Chen or Si is like a moon you can't see in daylight. Ri Yue Fan Bei (sun and moon turned away) is both lights in the dark, yet both shining into the Life Palace. The name doesn't sound good, but in the same passage the Quan Shu itself adds "do not judge it simply as turned away," telling readers not to generalize. To see whether you have it, draw your chart.

The conditions for Ri Yue Fan Bei

Xingge's detection uses two conditions:

Tai Yang and Tai Yin move together, so only two combinations make them both dim and both reach the Life Palace:

  • Tai Yang in Xu (Bu), Tai Yin in Chen (Xian)
  • Tai Yang in Hai (Xian), Tai Yin in Mao (Xian)

About 1 chart in 25 has it.

What the classics say

The Tai Wei Fu in volume one of the Quan Shu says:

The sun and moon most dislike being turned away.

Volume three takes this line up and adds a commentary. Its first half says that when the sun and moon share a palace, the time of birth matters:

By day, look to Tai Yang; by night, to Tai Yin.

People born in the daytime look to Tai Yang, people born at night to Tai Yin; each has its own light to rely on. The commentary's example of being turned away is Tai Yang in Xu and Tai Yin in Chen, and its last two lines are the heart of the passage:

If one goes out, leaves the clan and builds a household, it is also auspicious. Do not judge it simply as turned away.

Meaning: if people with Ri Yue Fan Bei leave home and build their own family and career, things go well too; don't jump to conclusions the moment you see "turned away." The ancients themselves gave it a way out.

How to read it today

Tai Yang is giving outward and being seen; Tai Yin is inner accumulation and security. With both dim, a common picture is:

  • Harder work in the early years. Effort doesn't always pay off right away; you have to work for a while before you are noticed.
  • Steadier with age. You rely on skills you've worked to build rather than a glow you started with. Once those skills take shape, nobody can take them away.
  • Smoother after leaving where you started. The classics say "go out and leave the clan"; today that means moving cities, going abroad or leaving the circle you grew up in, which is often a turning point.

You can also think of it this way: with Tai Yang and Tai Yin dim, there are fewer outside light sources, so you learn early to make your own light. That's why many people with Ri Yue Fan Bei grow up especially independent.

Where Ri Yue Fan Bei tends to get stuck

First, losing heart when your effort goes unseen. With Tai Yang dim, you do a lot without anyone noticing; with Tai Yin dim, the inner sense of insecurity is heavier. What helps most is recording your achievements and saying them out loud, rather than waiting for others to discover them.

Second, leaving your comfort zone too late. The classics say outright that going out is better, yet many people hold on where they are for a long time.

What loosens it

  • The time of birth lines up. "By day, look to Tai Yang; by night, to Tai Yin" originally refers to the sun and moon in the same palace, but practitioners often apply it to Ri Yue Fan Bei too: for people born by day, Tai Yang's side weighs more; for people born at night, Tai Yin's. Matching the relatively brighter side makes the feeling of being turned away lighter.
  • The sun or moon taking Hua Lu, Hua Quan or Hua Ke. For example, in Geng years Tai Yang takes Hua Lu and Tai Yin Hua Ke, and in Ding years Tai Yin takes Hua Lu, giving the dim star an extra push.
  • Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui or Tian Yue in the San Fang. When your own light isn't enough, someone lights the way.

On the other hand, if the sun and moon also meet Hua Ji, Qing Yang or Tuo Luo, or the San Fang meets Ju Men, more patience is needed.

Interestingly, with the Life Palace in Wei and empty of main stars, Tai Yang in Mao and Tai Yin in Hai shining in is called Ming Zhu Chu Hai; with the same Life Palace in Wei but Tai Yang in Hai and Tai Yin in Mao, it becomes Fan Bei. The same Life Palace position, with the light coming from another direction, reads completely differently. For the case where both are bright, see Ri Yue Bing Ming.

How to check whether you have Ri Yue Fan Bei

  1. Draw your chart and find which palaces Tai Yang and Tai Yin are in.
  2. Confirm both are within the Life Palace's San Fang Si Zheng.
  3. Look at both stars' brightness; if both are Bu or Xian, the pattern forms. Then check whether you were born by day or night and compare with the commentary.

Common questions

Is Ri Yue Fan Bei serious?

The Quan Shu says "the sun and moon most dislike being turned away," but the commentary in the same passage also says "if one goes out, leaves the clan and builds a household, it is also auspicious; do not judge it simply as turned away." It describes harder work in the early years and light you have to build yourself, not an outcome. Many people with Ri Yue Fan Bei do better after leaving the place they grew up.

What path suits people with Ri Yue Fan Bei?

The classics give the direction outright: "go out and leave the clan." Today, moving cities, going abroad or switching to a new industry are common turning points. Building on expertise and a body of work suits you better than relying on background and connections.

A pattern is a bonus, not a verdict. On your own chart, the same pattern still depends on brightness, the San Fang Si Zheng and which Decade Luck you are in.
