What is Yang Liang Chang Lu (Sun, Beam, Literary and Wealth)?

Ask a practitioner about exam luck, and the first combination they often look for is Yang Liang Chang Lu. The four syllables are four stars: Tai Yang, Tian Liang, Wen Chang and a Lu star. The ancients said people with all of them favored official rank; today that means study, exams and professional certification come especially easily. To see whether you have it, draw your chart.

The conditions for Yang Liang Chang Lu

Xingge's condition is that the Life Palace's San Fang Si Zheng contains all of:

• Tai Yang
• Tian Liang
• Wen Chang
• A Lu star: Lu Cun, or a Hua Lu on any star

All four must come together among the Life, Travel, Wealth and Career Palaces, spread out or sharing palaces. By this condition, about 1 chart in 22 has it.

The name "Yang Liang Chang Lu" was given to this combination by later astrology books; the Quan Shu has no pattern by this four-part name. But several of its lines describe exactly this group of stars.

What the classics say

The Supplemented Dou Shu Gou Lü in volume one says:

Tai Yang meeting Wen Chang in the Career Palace: the name called in the golden hall.

"Calling the name" was the announcement of results at the palace examination; "called in the golden hall" meant passing the highest imperial exam and being named in the great hall. Volume three has a similar line:

Tai Yang and Wen Chang in the Career Palace: a place in the court of the imperial hall.

When volume two discusses Wen Chang in the Life Palace, it names the whole group:

Meeting Tai Yang, Tian Liang and Lu Cun, wealth and career shine; wealth, standing and a name that spreads.

"Tai Yang, Tian Liang" are Yang and Liang, "Lu Cun" is the Lu star, and "wealth and career shine" means both the Wealth and Career Palaces stand out. The later Yang Liang Chang Lu is essentially distilled from these lines.

Notice that the classics name the Career Palace specifically: Tai Yang and Wen Chang in the Career Palace is where the strength is most concentrated. Xingge's detection only needs all four in the San Fang, so if your Tai Yang and Wen Chang happen to be in the Career Palace, you have the version the classics value most.

How to read it today

Each of the four stars governs one thing:

• Tai Yang: being seen, reputation.
• Tian Liang: principles and protection, the "shelter" star.
• Wen Chang: order, paperwork, exams and formal learning.
• The Lu star: resources and reward.

Together, a closer reading:

• Exams and certifications are your path. Civil service exams, public sector jobs, graduate school, professional licenses: step-by-step competitions with standard answers suit people with Yang Liang Chang Lu especially well.
• Qualifications pay off. With a Lu star in the San Fang, what you study converts more easily into a real position and income.
• Suited to professional careers. Lawyers, accountants, healthcare workers, teachers, researchers and civil servants, careers built on licenses and expertise, are where it shines.

Where Yang Liang Chang Lu tends to get stuck

First, getting too used to solving problems with exams. People who are very good at exam preparation sometimes treat certificates as security, collecting one after another without working out what they'll use them for.

Second, the gap after the exams. Exams have standard answers; work and life don't. People used to going step by step can feel unsettled when there are no rules.

What weakens it

• Wen Chang taking Hua Ji. In Xin years Wen Chang takes Hua Ji, and study and exams become what you care about most and get stuck on most easily.
• Tai Yang taking Hua Ji. In Jia years Tai Yang takes Hua Ji, and giving a lot and being seen is harder going.
• Wen Chang at Xian. In the Quan Shu's brightness table, Wen Chang is at Xian in Yin, Wu and Xu, so its power of order and paperwork is weaker.
• Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Di Kong or Di Jie in the San Fang. Exam luck has setbacks, often missing by a little and needing a second attempt.

On the other hand, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, Tian Kui or Tian Yue in the San Fang add to it. People with Tai Yang and Tian Liang in the Life Palace in Mao who also have Wen Chang and a Lu star in the San Fang have both Ri Zhao Lei Men and Yang Liang Chang Lu.

How to check whether you have Yang Liang Chang Lu

1. Draw your chart and find the Life, Travel, Wealth and Career Palaces.
2. See whether Tai Yang, Tian Liang and Wen Chang are among them.
3. Then check for Lu Cun, or any star marked "Lu."

With all four, the pattern forms. Wen Chang is one of the Six Auspicious Stars, introduced in the Six Auspicious Stars lesson; what Hua Lu means is in the Hua Lu lesson.

Common questions

What does Yang Liang Chang Lu mean?

Tai Yang, Tian Liang and Wen Chang plus a Lu star (Lu Cun or Hua Lu) all meet in the Life Palace's San Fang Si Zheng. The Quan Shu says "Tai Yang meeting Wen Chang in the Career Palace: the name called in the golden hall," which the ancients read as favoring the imperial exams and official rank; today it reads as study, exams and certification coming especially easily.

Does Yang Liang Chang Lu guarantee passing exams?

No. A pattern is a tendency, not a guarantee. It means you suit a path built on exams and expertise and have a good foundation for exam luck; but Wen Chang taking Hua Ji, challenging stars in the San Fang, or a difficult Decade or Annual Luck at the time all affect the result. Preparation itself still matters most.

Do both Lu Cun and Hua Lu count?

Both count. Lu Cun is the fixed star of steady income, and Hua Lu is the Lu given by the birth-year stem; both are called "Lu" in Zi Wei Dou Shu. Either one in the San Fang meets the Lu condition.

How common is Yang Liang Chang Lu?

About 1 chart in 22. Needing four things together in the San Fang makes it rarer than a single star in the Life Palace, but it isn't rare.
