What is Cai Yin Jia Yin (Seal Between Wealth and Shelter)?
Conditions
Of the two palaces on either side of Tian Xiang, one has a Hua Lu and the other has Tian Liang.
When you draw your chart, Xingge marks the patterns it contains.
Tian Xiang transforms into the Seal: the star of stamping, coordinating and fitting in with its surroundings, and how it fares often depends on its neighbors on either side. Cai Yin Jia Yin (wealth and shelter flanking the seal) is the best kind of neighbors: on one side "wealth," standing for resources; on the other "shelter," standing for protection. With Tian Xiang in the middle, it is like money in your left hand and someone covering you on your right. To see where your Tian Xiang is, draw your chart.
How Cai Yin Jia Yin forms
First, a fixed arrangement: the two palaces on either side of Tian Xiang are always Ju Men on one side and Tian Liang on the other. This is a rule of how the fourteen main stars are placed, the same for everyone.
Tian Liang transforms into Shelter, so the "shelter" side is already in place from birth. The only thing Cai Yin Jia Yin still needs is the "wealth": the palace with Ju Men must have a Hua Lu.
That palace may hold Ju Men alone, or Ju Men with Tian Ji, Tai Yang or Tian Tong. So the pattern forms when:
- Born in a Xin year: Ju Men takes Hua Lu. Whatever the chart looks like, Tian Xiang always has Hua Lu beside it, so everyone born in a Xin year has Cai Yin Jia Yin.
- Born in a Yi year: Tian Ji takes Hua Lu; it forms when Tian Ji happens to share the palace with Ju Men.
- Born in a Bing year: Tian Tong takes Hua Lu; it forms when Tian Tong happens to share the palace with Ju Men.
- Born in a Geng year: Tai Yang takes Hua Lu; it forms when Tai Yang happens to share the palace with Ju Men.
Overall, about 1 chart in 7 has it in some palace, so it isn't rare. In the Life Palace it is less common, about 1 in 75.
What the classics say, and how Xingge differs
The section on patterns of wealth in volume one of the Quan Shu says:
Cai Yin Jia Yin: Tian Xiang guarding the Life Palace, flanked by Wu Qu and Tian Liang; the Property Palace is the same.
In the original, "wealth" means Wu Qu (which transforms into Wealth) and "shelter" is Tian Liang: Tian Xiang in the Life or Property Palace, flanked by Wu Qu and Tian Liang.
The problem is that by the standard placement rules, Wu Qu is never next to Tian Xiang, so read literally, this pattern can't be cast. Later practitioners mostly read "wealth" as Hua Lu, and Xingge's detection does the same. The classics also only speak of the Life and Property Palaces; Xingge's detection doesn't restrict the palace, and reads whichever palace it falls in.
The classics put it among the patterns of wealth, valuing fortune and family assets.
How to read it today
Tian Xiang already adjusts itself to its surroundings, and its neighbors decide which way it is pushed. Cai Yin Jia Yin means:
- Resources are often handed to you. The Hua Lu side brings opportunities, budgets and connections.
- An elder or someone experienced has your back. The Tian Liang side is like someone who shields you and gives advice.
- Suited to rising within an organization. Tian Xiang is already good at coordinating, and with support on both sides you are easily seen as a reliable go-between.
Xingge's reading: resources on one side, someone covering you on the other; in this area, someone often takes care of things for you.
In the Life Palace, you yourself are easily promoted; in the Career Palace, work comes with resources and backers; in the Property Palace, closest to the classical meaning, there are more family resources and care from elders.
What to watch with Cai Yin Jia Yin
Relying too much on those around you. Tian Xiang already changes easily with its surroundings, and with support on both sides it is even easier to let others decide. When the neighbors change one day, for example in another Decade Luck, you need to be able to stand on your own.
Blurring favors and transactions. The gains Hua Lu brings often come with obligations; before accepting, think about what you'll owe.
The opposite case is Xing Ji Jia Yin: Tian Xiang flanked by Hua Ji and Qing Yang, pulled from both sides. Read the two together and it becomes clear why Tian Xiang pays so much attention to its neighbors. The flanking palaces lesson covers the general rules for combinations like this.
Common questions
What does Cai Yin Jia Yin mean?
Of the two palaces either side of Tian Xiang, one has Hua Lu ("wealth") and the other Tian Liang ("shelter"). Tian Xiang is like a seal in the middle, with resources on one side and protection on the other, so in that area someone often takes care of things for you. The Quan Shu lists it among the patterns of wealth.
Why does everyone born in a Xin year have Cai Yin Jia Yin?
The palaces on either side of Tian Xiang are always Ju Men and Tian Liang, and in Xin years Ju Men takes Hua Lu. So for anyone born in a Xin year, one side of Tian Xiang is always Ju Men with Hua Lu and the other Tian Liang, and the condition is met automatically. The stem follows the lunar year.
The classics say "flanked by Wu Qu and Tian Liang"; why does Xingge look at Hua Lu?
By the standard placement rules, Wu Qu is never next to Tian Xiang, so the literal "flanked by Wu Qu and Tian Liang" can't be cast. Later practitioners mostly read "wealth" as Hua Lu, and Xingge uses that reading.
Does Cai Yin Jia Yin have to be in the Life Palace?
The classics speak of the Life and Property Palaces. Xingge's detection doesn't restrict the palace: wherever it appears, someone often takes care of things for you in that area.

A pattern is a bonus, not a verdict. On your own chart, the same pattern still depends on brightness, the San Fang Si Zheng and which Decade Luck you are in.
