What is Ju Ri Tong Gong (Gate and Sun Together)?
Conditions
Tai Yang and Ju Men sit together in the Life Palace, with the Life Palace in Yin or Shen; Yin counts as favorable, Shen as neutral.
When you draw your chart, Xingge marks the patterns it contains.
Ju Men transforms into the Hidden: a star that loves to question and debate, and easily stirs up disputes. Tai Yang is a star that gives off light. With the two together, the ancients read it as "Tai Yang lighting up Ju Men's darkness": eloquence gains light, and people listen to what you say. The combination is called Ju Ri Tong Gong (Ju Men and Tai Yang in the same palace), and the Quan Shu rates it highly. To see whether you have it, draw your chart.
The conditions for Ju Ri Tong Gong
- The main stars in the Life Palace are exactly Tai Yang and Ju Men.
- The Life Palace is in Yin or Shen.
Tai Yang and Ju Men only share a palace in Yin and Shen. Ju Men is at Miao in both; Tai Yang is at Wang in Yin and De in Shen. About 1 chart in 77 has Ju Ri Tong Gong in the Life Palace.
Xingge reads the two positions separately: Yin counts as favorable, Shen as neutral. Yin is early morning, with the sun rising; Shen is afternoon, with the sun going down. The classics actually speak well of both, as explained below.
What the classics say, and how we read it today
The Gu Sui Fu in volume one says:
Ju Men and Tai Yang in the same palace: office conferred for three generations.
"Office conferred for three generations" means a standing great enough to benefit three generations, up and down. Volume three lists a whole series:
Ju Men and Tai Yang in the Life Palace at Yin: salary and a name that travels.
Ju Men and Tai Yang with the Life Palace in Shen: also excellent.
"Salary and a name that travels" means both income and reputation. Volume three also says that Tai Yang and Ju Men in Yin with the Life Palace in Shen (shining in from opposite), or in Shen with the Life Palace in Yin, likewise bring "a name that travels and salary." So the classics' scope is wider than Xingge's: not only sitting in the Life Palace, but shining in from opposite counts too. Volume one's verse on stars well placed in the twelve palaces also has the line "Ju Men and Tai Yang in Yin: abundance and plenty."
Xingge reads Shen a little more conservatively than the classics, because Tai Yang in Shen only reaches De and its light is starting to fall, so a gap opens more easily between reputation and substance. This is a reading note, not a judgment from the classics.
Taking the two stars apart:
- [Tai Yang](/star/taiyang) is warm and giving, with name before money; the more public, the more it shines.
- [Ju Men](/star/jumen) is eloquent and analytical, with words that carry weight and can stir up controversy.
Together, the common picture is:
- Making a living by speaking. Teaching, public speaking, media, law, sales, public relations and consulting are all stages where it shines.
- More persuasive in public. What you say in front of people has more force than what you say in private.
- A sense of justice. Tai Yang's openness plus Ju Men's digging means that when something is wrong, you want to say so.
The difference between Yin and Shen
Yin: sunrise lighting the dark. The sun is growing brighter, and eloquence and reputation rise together. Step forward actively; the earlier you speak up in public, the better.
Shen: sunset lighting the dark. The sun's light is still there but drawing in. Your words carry just as much weight, but need more results behind them. Get things done first, then speak, and you'll be far more persuasive.
Where Ju Ri Tong Gong tends to get stuck
First, disputes. It is Ju Men's nature to stir up controversy; say things too fully or too bluntly, and the reputation comes fast, and so does the gossip.
Second, saying before doing. Tai Yang loves to show and Ju Men knows how to talk, so together it's easy to promise first and work out how later; people with it in Shen especially should watch this.
Third, caring too much about right and wrong. Wanting to persuade and make things clear, you sometimes win the argument and lose the relationship.
What strengthens it and what weakens it
- Strengthens: in Xin years Ju Men takes Hua Lu and Tai Yang takes Hua Quan, pushing both stars at once; Tai Yang taking Hua Lu in Geng years and Ju Men taking Hua Quan in Gui years are also strong. Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui or Tian Yue in the San Fang make your words more readily accepted.
- Weakens: in Jia years Tai Yang takes Hua Ji and in Ding years Ju Men does, so one star in the Life Palace carries something "you can't let go"; Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing or Hua Ji in the San Fang bring more disputes, so think one step further before speaking.
How to check whether you have Ju Ri Tong Gong
- Draw your chart and see which branch your Life Palace is in.
- If it is Yin or Shen with Tai Yang and Ju Men as the main stars, you have Ju Ri Tong Gong.
- If the Life Palace is empty but the Travel Palace opposite holds Tai Yang and Ju Men, the classics also count it as "a name that travels and salary," a little weaker than sitting in the Life Palace.
To read the two stars separately, see Tai Yang in the Life Palace, Ju Men in the Life Palace and the Tian Tong and Ju Men lesson.
Common questions
How does Ju Ri Tong Gong differ in Yin and Shen?
Ju Men is at Miao in both; Tai Yang is at Wang in Yin and De in Shen. Yin is like sunrise, with eloquence and reputation rising together; Shen is like sunset, with words that carry weight but need more results behind them. The Quan Shu speaks well of both; Xingge reads Shen a little more conservatively, as a reminder to act first and speak after.
What work suits Ju Ri Tong Gong?
Work based on expression and persuasion, such as teaching, public speaking, media, law, sales, public relations and consulting. Tai Yang makes people willing to listen; Ju Men gives what you say substance.
Why does it say "office conferred for three generations"?
The line comes from the Gu Sui Fu in volume one of the Quan Shu, meaning a standing great enough to benefit three generations. The ancients believed Tai Yang's light could brighten Ju Men's darkness, so eloquence and reputation combine and are easily seen and recognized in public.
Does it count if the Life Palace is empty and Tai Yang and Ju Men are opposite?
According to volume three of the Quan Shu, Tai Yang and Ju Men in Yin with the Life Palace in Shen, or in Shen with the Life Palace in Yin, also bring "a name that travels and salary." Xingge's Ju Ri Tong Gong only marks them sitting in the Life Palace; an empty Life Palace borrowing them from opposite is a little weaker but similar in nature.
