What is Lu Feng Xun Kong (Lu Meets Xun Kong)?

Lu Feng Xun Kong (Lu meeting Xun Kong) is a close cousin of Lu Feng Jie Kong: both are a Lu star falling into voidness, gains that look solid and feel hollow when you pick them up. The difference is the kind of voidness, and the ancients considered Xun Kong a little lighter than Jie Kong. To see where your Lu stars are, draw your chart.

What Xun Kong is and how it is placed

The ancients recorded years in stem-branch pairs: ten stems paired with twelve branches, counted in cycles of ten called a "xun." Ten stems can only pair with ten branches, so in each cycle two branches go unpaired; these two are Xun Kong, the void within the cycle.

The verse in volume two of the Quan Shu reads:

In the Jia Zi cycle, Xu and Hai are void; in Jia Yin, Zi and Chou; in Jia Chen, Yin and Mao; in Jia Wu, Chen and Si; in Jia Shen, Wu and Wei; in Jia Xu, Shen and You.

For example, a Geng Chen birth year belongs to the Jia Xu cycle (Jia Xu, Yi Hai, Bing Zi, Ding Chou, Wu Yin, Ji Mao, Geng Chen…), so Xun Kong is in Shen and You.

Xingge's chart marks only one of these two palaces as "Xun Kong": the one whose yin-yang matches the birth-year branch (Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen and Xu are yang; the rest are yin). Geng Chen is a yang year, so it is marked in Shen. Lu Feng Xun Kong is detected only on the marked palace.

Xun Kong depends on the birth year's stem-branch pair, while Jie Kong depends only on the stem, so the two are placed differently and often land in different palaces.

How Lu Feng Xun Kong forms

The condition is: Lu Cun or a Hua Lu sits in the Life, Body or Wealth Palace, and that palace is Xun Kong. The classical line below speaks of the Body and Life, and volume one also says "sources of wealth fear voidness," so only these three palaces count. If the palace is also Jie Kong, Xingge counts it as Lu Feng Jie Kong, because the ancients considered Jie Kong heavier.

By Xingge's marking, years with Lu Cun in Xun Kong are rare: only four in every sixty:

• Jia Chen and Yi Si years: Xun Kong is in Yin and Mao; Lu Cun is in Yin in Jia years and Mao in Yi years.
• Geng Chen and Xin Si years: Xun Kong is in Shen and You; Lu Cun is in Shen in Geng years and You in Xin years.

The most recent are people born in 2000, 2001, 2024 and 2025 (by lunar year). Counting both palaces of the verse would add a few more years, for example Ren Shen years with Lu Cun in Hai and Xun Kong in Xu and Hai, but Xingge only marks Xu, so it doesn't count. In other years it depends on where the star taking Hua Lu sits. Counting only the Life, Body and Wealth Palaces, about 1 chart in 30 has Lu Feng Xun Kong.

What the classics say

The Tan Xing Yao Lun in volume three of the Quan Shu says:

In reading the Body and Life, Lu and Ma should not fall into voidness; Tian Kong and Jie Kong matter most, Xun Kong less.

Lu Cun and Tian Ma are best not falling into voidness; if they do, Jie Kong matters more than Xun Kong. So in the ancients' ranking, Xun Kong comes "less": it has an effect, but a lighter one.

How to read it today

The "void" in Xun Kong is more like hollow, not quite solid. Today, common signs of Lu Feng Xun Kong are:

• More promised than delivered. The promised profit share or opportunity ends up only half honored.
• Gains that need an extra step. Not none, but you have to chase, confirm and fill in the paperwork.
• Money that feels like less than the numbers. There is income, but it never quite feels saved.

Xingge reads Lu Feng Xun Kong as: gains are sometimes a little hollow and need one more step to become real; set aside a share of income first, and get promises in writing.

What loosens it

• Xun Kong is lighter in palaces with many auspicious stars. With Hua Quan, Hua Ke, Zuo Fu or You Bi in the same palace, the hollow part is more easily filled.
• Only one of Lu Cun and Hua Lu is in Xun Kong. The other Lu star can still bring solid gains.
• The Lu stars of the Decade and Annual Luck fall elsewhere. When your period moves to solid ground, the birth chart's Xun Kong isn't always in the foreground.

If the same palace also has Di Kong or Di Jie, it is also Lu Feng Kong Jie, and getting things safely in hand matters even more.

2. On your chart, find the palace marked "Xun Kong": of the two palaces the verse gives, the one whose yin-yang matches your birth-year branch.
3. Check whether Lu Cun or Hua Lu is there, and whether that palace is your Life, Body or Wealth Palace.
