What is Ming Zhu Chu Hai (Bright Pearl Rising from the Sea)?
Conditions
The Life Palace is in Wei with no main star, and Tai Yang in Mao and Tai Yin in Hai shine into it from the trines.
When you draw your chart, Xingge marks the patterns it contains.
Many people feel uneasy when they see their Life Palace has no main star. Ming Zhu Chu Hai (the bright pearl rising from the sea) is exactly the opposite case: the Life Palace is empty, yet Tai Yang and Tai Yin shine in from either side, both at their brightest. The ancients counted it as a noble pattern and gave it a name like a painting: a bright pearl slowly rising from the sea. To see whether you have it, draw your chart.
The conditions for Ming Zhu Chu Hai
The conditions are precise, and all three must hold:
- The Life Palace is in Wei and has no main star; it is an Empty Palace.
- Tai Yang is in Mao, at Miao.
- Tai Yin is in Hai, also at Miao.
Mao, Hai and Wei form a trine, so Tai Yang and Tai Yin shine into the Life Palace from the Career and Wealth positions. About 1 chart in 110 has it.
Because the main stars move together, a Ming Zhu Chu Hai chart has a few fixed features:
- Tai Yang in Mao always shares the palace with Tian Liang, the same pair as in Ri Zhao Lei Men.
- The Life Palace is empty and borrows from the opposite palace, Chou, which holds Tian Tong and Ju Men.
- Tai Yang and Tai Yin are both bright and both reach the Life Palace, so Ming Zhu Chu Hai is always Ri Yue Bing Ming as well.
What the classics say
In its passage on Tai Yang and Tai Yin shining in, volume three of the Quan Shu puts it directly:
Sun in Mao, moon in Hai, the Life Palace placed in Wei: many win the laurel.
"Winning the laurel" meant passing the imperial exams. Life Palace in Wei, Tai Yang in Mao, Tai Yin in Hai: the conditions match Xingge's detection exactly.
The Gu Sui Fu has another line:
The bright pearl in the trines, in places of strength: steady steps to the moon palace.
"In the trines" means shining in from trine positions, "places of strength" means the stars are bright, and "the moon palace" stood for passing the exams. The section on noble patterns in volume one lists Ming Zhu Chu Hai as a noble pattern.
How to read it today
An empty Life Palace means your main thread isn't set at birth; the sun and moon shining in from both sides means plenty of outside light. A closer reading:
- Not necessarily the first to shine, but brighter with time. When young you may still be working out who you are; once you have built up enough, the light of the sun and moon shows together.
- Resources from both money and work. Tai Yang and Tai Yin sit in the Career and Wealth positions, so both your work and your earnings have bright spots.
- Very adaptable. The empty palace borrows Tian Tong and Ju Men from the opposite palace, so your character has Tian Tong's ease and Ju Men's analytical mind, without being tied to a single main star; you adapt well to new places and roles.
Where Ming Zhu Chu Hai tends to get stuck
First, feeling directionless in early years. People with an empty Life Palace often need a little longer than others to find their place. That is a process, not a flaw.
Second, thinking and talking too much. The borrowed Tian Tong dislikes hassle and the borrowed Ju Men loves to analyze. Once you have thought it through, remember to act.
Third, depending too much on outside light. The sun and moon shining in is a good thing, but it also means your state is easily affected by your surroundings. In a good environment you shine quickly; in the wrong place you dim just as fast. Choosing your environment matters more than pushing through.
What weakens it
- Tai Yang or Tai Yin taking Hua Ji. In Jia years Tai Yang takes Hua Ji, in Yi years Tai Yin does; the brightest light gains a layer of worry.
- The borrowed Ju Men taking Hua Ji. In Ding years Ju Men takes Hua Ji; the opposite palace is held back, and the stars the Life Palace borrows carry that worry too.
- Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Di Kong or Di Jie in the Life Palace. The Life Palace is already empty, so challenging stars entering it make the main thread even harder to steady.
On the other hand, auspicious stars such as Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang or Wen Qu sitting in the Life Palace give the empty palace its own support, and the pearl shines even brighter.
How to check whether you have Ming Zhu Chu Hai
- Draw your chart and see whether your Life Palace is in Wei with no main star.
- Find Tai Yang and check whether it is in Mao.
- Find Tai Yin and check whether it is in Hai.
If all three hold, the pattern forms. For how to read an empty palace, see the Empty Palace lesson and the introduction to the Empty Palace.
Common questions
Isn't a Life Palace with no main star a bad thing?
An empty Life Palace isn't bad in itself; it depends on what it borrows and what shines in from the San Fang. Ming Zhu Chu Hai is the most highly regarded kind of empty palace: Tai Yang and Tai Yin both at their brightest, shining in from the trines. The Quan Shu says "sun in Mao, moon in Hai, the Life Palace placed in Wei: many win the laurel."
How common is Ming Zhu Chu Hai?
Not common: about 1 chart in 110. The Life Palace has to be exactly in Wei and empty, with Tai Yang exactly in Mao and Tai Yin in Hai.
How does Ming Zhu Chu Hai relate to Ri Yue Bing Ming?
Ming Zhu Chu Hai is always Ri Yue Bing Ming too, because Tai Yang in Mao and Tai Yin in Hai are both at Miao, both bright and both shining into the Life Palace. Ming Zhu Chu Hai is the most precisely defined kind of Ri Yue Bing Ming, and the classics gave it its own name.
If my Life Palace is in Mao or Hai and lit by the sun and moon, is it Ming Zhu Chu Hai?
No. Mao, Hai and Wei form one trine, and all three positions can see the sun and moon, but the original text says "the Life Palace placed in Wei." With the Life Palace in Mao, it is Tai Yang and Tian Liang in the Life Palace, Ri Zhao Lei Men; in Hai, it is Tai Yin in the Life Palace, Yue Lang Tian Men. They are three different patterns, and only the empty Life Palace in Wei is called Ming Zhu Chu Hai.

A pattern is a bonus, not a verdict. On your own chart, the same pattern still depends on brightness, the San Fang Si Zheng and which Decade Luck you are in.
