The Nature of Ju Men
〈巨門星性情〉
The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 2: Placing the stars and the twelve palaces · Original text with translation
Introduction
Ju Men belongs to water and to the Northern Dipper; its transformed qi is darkness, and it governs right and wrong, that is, disputes. The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu describes a Ju Men person as 「作事進退,多疑且多學少精,與人寡合,多是多非,奔波勞碌」: going forward and back in what he does, suspicious, learning much but mastering little, getting on with few, surrounded by quarrels, rushing about and toiling. In its temple the person is tall and stout, solid and refined; out of its temple, short in limb and body, thin and small.
How the chapter runs:
- Year stems and palaces (segments 2 and 3): it likes Zuo Fu, You Bi and Lu Cun; people born in Gui or Xin years with the Life Palace in Zi or Mao fit the pattern; people born in Geng or Ding years with the Life Palace in Chen or Xu are neither rich nor noble; in Zi or Wu, people born in Bing or Wu years are lonely, widowed and die young; for people born in Jia years, Ju Men in Mao is in its temple but shares the palace with Qing Yang, which breaks the pattern.
- Jade hidden in stone (segment 4): with the Body or Life Palace in Zi or Wu it is the jade-in-stone pattern, and meeting Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu brings lifelong blessings; meeting Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing and Hua Ji, 「若不夭折,男盜女娼」.
- Women's charts (segment 5): in its temple, a woman born in a Gui or Xin year enjoys blessings; fallen, she harms her husband and children; the original says 「此星在女命多有瑕玷」.
- Palace by palace (segments 6 to 11) and three sets of verses on fortune and misfortune.
Segment 10 calls Ju Men in Chen and Xu 'moderate', but in the volume two brightness table and on a Xingge chart Ju Men is Xian (Fallen) in Chen and Xu. Harsh verdicts are translated literally; modern readings are left to the commentary.
1巨門水,北斗化暗,主是非。入廟身長肥胖敦厚清秀,不入廟五短瘦小,作事進退,多疑且多學少精,與人寡合,多是多非,奔波勞碌。
TranslationJu Men belongs to water, belongs to the Northern Dipper, has darkness as its transformed qi, and governs right and wrong. A person with Ju Men in its temple in the Life Palace is tall, stout, solid and refined; out of its temple, short in limb and body, thin and small. He goes forward and back in what he does, is suspicious, learns much but masters little, gets on with few people, has much right and wrong about him, and rushes about toiling.
- 五短
- Short in all five: limbs and trunk all short and small.
- 寡合
- To get on with few people.
This is the general description of Ju Men in the Life Palace and one of the Quan Shu's most negative passages on any major star: wavering, suspicious, learning much but mastering little, getting on with few, surrounded by quarrels, toiling. All of it comes from the transformed qi, darkness: in the dark one cannot see clearly, not seeing clearly breeds suspicion, and suspicion breeds disputes.
What Does Ju Men Govern? lists Ju Men's harm palace by palace, from quarrels in the Body and Life Palaces to 「遭棄擲」 in the Parents Palace, all in the same key. The modern reading of Ju Men as eloquence, analysis and getting to the bottom of things turns 'darkness' around: precisely because things are unclear, one has to question and argue. On a Xingge chart Ju Men is Xian (Fallen) in Chen and Xu and Miao (Temple) in Yin, Shen, Mao and You.
2喜左右祿存六癸六辛生人,命坐子卯合局。六庚六丁生人,辰戌安命卻不富貴。
TranslationIt likes Zuo Fu, You Bi and Lu Cun; people born in any of the six Gui or six Xin years with the Life Palace in Zi or Mao fit the pattern. People born in the six Geng or six Ding years with the Life Palace placed in Chen or Xu are, on the contrary, neither rich nor noble.
The first half: Ju Men likes Zuo Fu, You Bi and Lu Cun, and people born in Gui or Xin years with the Life Palace in Zi or Mao fit the pattern. In Zi Ju Men stands alone; in Mao it shares the palace with Tian Ji. In Xin years Ju Men takes Hua Lu and in Gui years Hua Quan, so the transformation falls right on Ju Men; and in Gui years Lu Cun is in Zi, sitting in the Life Palace.
The second half: people born in Geng or Ding years with the Life Palace in Chen or Xu are not rich or noble. In Ding years Ju Men takes Hua Ji in the Life Palace, and Chen and Xu are its fallen positions; in Geng years Tian Tong takes Hua Ji in the opposite palace. In both years Hua Ji bears down on the Chen-Xu line, hence neither wealth nor rank.
3子午宮安命,丙戊生人孤寡夭折。六甲生人居卯宮雖入廟,與擎羊同度破局平常論。
TranslationWith the Life Palace placed in Zi or Wu, people born in Bing or Wu years are lonely, widowed and die young. For people born in the six Jia years, in Mao Ju Men is in its temple, but it shares the palace with Qing Yang; the pattern is broken and it is judged ordinary.
- 破局
- A broken pattern: the pattern is spoiled.
The first half: Life Palace in Zi or Wu, born in a Bing or Wu year, lonely, widowed and short-lived. In both years Qing Yang is in Wu: for Wu it sits in the Life Palace, for Zi it clashes from opposite; and in Wu years Tian Ji takes Hua Ji in the opposite palace. The second half: born in a Jia year with Ju Men in Mao, it is in its temple but shares the palace with Qing Yang, so the pattern is broken and judged ordinary.
Star Combinations gives the reason outright: 「巨機居卯乙辛己丙至公卿」, and then 「甲人平常何也,因甲祿到寅卯宮有擎羊破格耳」 (see Star Combinations: Ju Men). The two passages agree on Mao in Jia years.
4身命居子午宮為石中隱玉格,更會科權祿,終身福厚,會羊陀火鈴化忌,若不夭折,男盜女娼。
TranslationWith the Body or Life Palace in Zi or Wu it is the pattern of jade hidden in stone; meeting Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu as well, blessings are rich all life. Meeting Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing and Hua Ji, if the person does not die young, the man is a thief and the woman a prostitute.
- 石中隱玉
- Jade hidden in stone: talent kept hidden inside.
Ju Men in Zi or Wu in the Body or Life Palace is the Shi Zhong Yin Yu (jade hidden in stone): Ju Men stands alone in Zi or Wu with Tian Ji opposite, like jade inside a stone, talent kept inward that shows only once worked. With Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu, blessings last all life; Star Combinations says 「巨門子午科權祿,石中隱玉福興隆」, with the note 「辛癸人上格,丁己人次之」 (see Star Combinations: Ju Men).
The second half, meeting the four malefic stars and Hua Ji, 「若不夭折,男盜女娼」, is translated literally. The same jade in stone splits into two extremes depending on lucky or unlucky transformations, which is the Quan Shu's typical way of reading Ju Men.
5女命入廟,六癸六辛生人享福,陷地傷夫剋子,丁人遇極淫,此星在女命多有瑕玷。
TranslationA woman's chart with Ju Men in its temple: people born in the six Gui or six Xin years enjoy blessings. Fallen, she harms her husband and children. People born in Ding years who meet it are extremely lewd. This star in a woman's chart mostly carries flaws and stains.
- 瑕玷
- Flaws and stains: spots on jade, meaning faults and blemishes.
The woman's Ju Men comes in three kinds: in its temple and born in a Gui or Xin year, she enjoys blessings; fallen, she harms husband and children; born in a Ding year (Ju Men takes Hua Ji), extremely lewd. The last sentence is the overall verdict, 「此星在女命多有瑕玷」, translated as the original has it.
The Quan Shu's bias against Ju Men in women's charts is plain: What Does Ju Men Govern? says Ju Men in the Spouse Palace means 「縱夫妻有對,不免汙名失節」. A woman with Ju Men today is more likely to be articulate, observant and slow to trust, prone to suspicion and arguments in love. That is a matter to work on, not a final verdict on her conduct.
6子午宮旺地,丁己癸辛生人福厚,丙戊生人主困。
TranslationIn Zi and Wu it is in a Wang position; people born in Ding, Ji, Gui or Xin years have rich blessings; people born in Bing or Wu years meet hardship.
In Zi and Wu Ju Men is Wang and stands alone, with Tian Ji opposite. In Ding and Ji years Lu Cun is in Wu; in Gui years Lu Cun is in Zi and Ju Men takes Hua Quan; in Xin years Ju Men takes Hua Lu; hence rich blessings. In Bing and Wu years Qing Yang is in Wu, hence hardship, in line with the 'lonely, widowed and short-lived' of segment 3, only in milder words.
In Ding years Ju Men takes Hua Ji, yet Ding is listed among the rich blessings. The jade-in-stone note in Star Combinations ranks Ding and Ji as 「次之」, a grade below Xin and Gui, which shows the Quan Shu had reservations about Ding.
7卯酉宮入廟,與天機同度,乙辛己丙生人財官格,丁戊生人有成敗。
TranslationIn Mao and You it is in its temple, in the same palace as Tian Ji; for people born in Yi, Xin, Ji or Bing years it is a wealth and office pattern; for people born in Ding or Wu years there is success and failure.
In Mao and You Ju Men is in its temple and shares a palace with Tian Ji: Ju Ji Tong Lin (Ju Men and Tian Ji arriving together). In Yi years Tian Ji takes Hua Lu and Lu Cun is in Mao; in Xin years Ju Men takes Hua Lu and Lu Cun is in You; in Bing years Tian Ji takes Hua Quan; hence a wealth and office pattern. The ground for Ji years is hard to see. In Ding years Ju Men takes Hua Ji and in Wu years Tian Ji takes Hua Ji, hence success and failure.
This chapter puts Wu years among success and failure, while The Nature of Tian Ji lists Wu years as a wealth and office pattern for the same combination. Since Tian Ji takes Hua Ji in Wu years, this chapter's version is the more reasonable.
8寅申宮入廟,與太陽同度,庚癸辛生人財官格。
TranslationIn Yin and Shen it is in its temple, in the same palace as Tai Yang; for people born in Geng, Gui or Xin years it is a wealth and office pattern.
In Yin and Shen Ju Men is in its temple and shares a palace with Tai Yang: Ju Ri Tong Gong (Ju Men and the sun in one palace). In Geng years Tai Yang takes Hua Lu; in Xin years Ju Men takes Hua Lu and Tai Yang Hua Quan; in Gui years Ju Men takes Hua Quan. In all three years a lucky transformation falls right in the Life Palace, hence a wealth and office pattern.
The Nature of Tai Yang lists 「丁己甲庚」 for the same combination; the two chapters share only Geng. This chapter looks at transformations landing on Ju Men and Tai Yang, that one mostly at where Lu Cun falls; they look from different angles and so list different stems.
9巳亥旺宮單守,癸辛丙生人財官格。
TranslationIn Si and Hai it is in a Wang palace, guarding alone; for people born in Gui, Xin or Bing years it is a wealth and office pattern.
- 單守
- Guarding alone: the only major star in the palace.
In Si and Hai Ju Men is Wang and stands alone, with Tai Yang opposite. For Si, in Bing years Lu Cun sits in the Life Palace; in Xin years Ju Men takes Hua Lu and Tai Yang Hua Quan; in Gui years Ju Men takes Hua Quan; hence a wealth and office pattern.
The Quan Shu says opposite things about Ju Men in Si and Hai. What Does Ju Men Govern? says Ju Men 「至亥寅巳申,雖富貴亦不耐久」, while Star Combinations says 「巨在亥宮日在巳,食祿馳名」 (see Star Combinations: Ju Men) and 「巨在巳宮日在亥,反為不佳」 (see the next line). Taken together, Ju Men in Hai (with a bright sun shining in from opposite) is better than Ju Men in Si.
10辰戌宮和平,癸辛生人主貴,丁生人困。
TranslationIn Chen and Xu it is moderate; people born in Gui or Xin years are noble; people born in Ding years meet hardship.
The Xingge approachThe original calls Ju Men in Chen and Xu 'moderate'; in the volume two brightness table Ju Men is fallen in Chen and Xu, and Xingge's brightness follows the table.
For Ju Men in Chen and Xu, the Xingge approach above already notes that the table has it fallen; Star Combinations also writes 「陷辰戌」. In Gui years Ju Men takes Hua Quan and in Xin years Hua Lu, hence rank; in Ding years Ju Men takes Hua Ji, hence hardship.
Star Combinations has the line 「巨門辰宮化忌,辛人命遇反為奇」 (see Star Combinations: Ju Men), and The Nature of the Four Transformations also says 「巨門在辰化忌辛生人返佳」. But by the Quan Shu's own transformation table Ju Men takes Hua Lu in Xin years, not Hua Ji, so the 'Hua Ji' in both places does not match the table. What can be said for sure is that Xin years are lucky for Ju Men in Chen or Xu, which agrees with this segment.
11丑未宮不得地,癸辛丙生人財官格。
TranslationIn Chou and Wei it does not have its place; for people born in Gui, Xin or Bing years it is a wealth and office pattern.
In Chou and Wei Ju Men is out of its place (Bu, Unsupported) and shares a palace with Tian Tong. In Gui years Ju Men takes Hua Quan, in Xin years Ju Men takes Hua Lu, and in Bing years Tian Tong takes Hua Lu; hence a wealth and office pattern.
The Nature of Tian Tong lists 「乙壬甲辛庚」 for the same Tian Tong and Ju Men combination; the two overlap only in Xin. All three stems here put a transformation on Tian Tong or Ju Men, so the ground is clearer; that chapter even includes Geng, when Tian Tong takes Hua Ji, which is more open to question.
巨門入男命吉凶訣:
13巨門子午二宮逢,局中得遇以為榮,三合化吉科權祿,官高極品衣紫袍。
TranslationWhen Ju Men is met in Zi or Wu, finding it within the pattern is glory; with lucky transformations, Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu, in the trine, office is high, of the very top grade, and he wears the purple robe.
- 衣紫袍
- To wear the purple robe: the dress of high officials.
A man's Ju Men in Zi or Wu: within the pattern it is glory, and with Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu in the trine, top-grade office and the purple robe. This is the verse form of the jade in stone in segment 4, with the same conditions: Zi or Wu plus lucky transformations.
Star Combinations says 「巨門子午科權祿,石中隱玉福興隆」 (see Star Combinations: Ju Men), and the Gu Sui Fu has the shorter 「子午巨門石中隱玉」. The Quan Shu is consistent about the conditions for jade in stone: without lucky transformations it is just a stone keeping its secret.
14此星化暗不宜逢,更會殺星愈肆凶,唇齒有傷兼性猛,若然入廟可和平。
TranslationThis star's transformed qi is darkness, and it is not good to meet; meeting killing stars as well, it is all the more wild and fierce. Lips and teeth are injured and the temper is violent; if it is in its temple, it can be moderate.
「此星化暗不宜逢」: the Quan Shu's general attitude to Ju Men is that it is not good to meet. With killing stars it is fiercer still, with injured lips and teeth and a violent temper; in its temple it can be moderate.
'Injured lips and teeth' extends Ju Men's rule over the mouth: besides quarrels and gossip, it lands on the body's lips and teeth. What Does Ju Men Govern? says Ju Men 「遇帝座則制其強。逢祿存則解其厄」: Zi Wei and Lu Cun are its best counterweights.
15巨門守命遇擎羊,火鈴逢之事不祥,為人性急多顛倒,百事茫茫亂主張。
TranslationJu Men guarding the Life Palace meets Qing Yang; with Huo Xing and Ling Xing meeting it, affairs are inauspicious. The person is quick-tempered and often gets things upside down; in a hundred matters he is at a loss and decides wildly.
Ju Men guarding the Life Palace with Qing Yang, and Huo Xing and Ling Xing too: affairs are inauspicious, the person is hot-tempered, muddles things and decides wildly. The set of stars here is clear: Ju Men plus Qing Yang, Huo Xing and Ling Xing.
Star Combinations says 「巨火擎羊陀逢惡曜,防縊死投河」 (see Star Combinations: Ju Men), the most extreme verdict for the same group of stars. This verse speaks only of temper and conduct and sits at the milder end.
巨門入女命吉凶訣:
17巨門旺地多生吉,左右加臨壽更長,女人得此誠為貴,簾捲珍珠坐繡房。
TranslationJu Men in a Wang position mostly brings good fortune; with Zuo Fu and You Bi arriving, life is longer still. A woman who has it is truly noble: with the pearl curtain rolled up, she sits in her embroidery chamber.
A woman's Ju Men in a Wang position (Zi, Wu, Si, Hai) mostly brings good fortune; with Zuo Fu and You Bi, a longer life; 「簾捲珍珠坐繡房」 is the life of a noble lady in old times. This verse points the same way as 'in its temple she enjoys blessings' in segment 5, the condition being Miao or Wang plus Zuo Fu and You Bi.
On your own chart, this verse is flagged for a woman whose Life Palace holds Ju Men at Miao or Wang. Set against verse 18, the line between good and bad for a woman's Ju Men lies wholly in temple or fallen.
18巨門命陷主淫娼,侍女偏房免災殃,相貌清奇多近寵,不然壽夭或凶亡。
TranslationJu Men fallen in the Life Palace means lewdness and prostitution; as a maid or secondary wife she escapes disaster. Her looks are fine and unusual and she is often favoured; otherwise she dies young or meets a violent death.
The condition is a woman with Ju Men fallen in the Life Palace (Chen or Xu). The verdict is translated literally: lewdness and prostitution; only as a maid or secondary wife does she escape disaster; her looks are fine and unusual and she is often favoured; otherwise a short life or a violent death. This is the Quan Shu's heaviest verse on Ju Men in a woman's chart.
The old reasoning: Ju Men is darkness, and in a fallen position darkness is doubled, so a woman's chart was read as murky relationships. This is the old habit of tying a woman's circumstances to her morals. In practice the issues of a fallen Ju Men are mostly quarrels, suspicion and isolation from others, and marriage has to be read from the Spouse Palace.
巨門入限吉凶訣:
20巨門主限化權星,最喜求謀萬事成,雖有官災並口舌,逢凶化吉得安寧。
TranslationWhen Ju Men rules the luck period and is a Hua Quan star, it is best for seeking and planning, and everything succeeds. Though there are lawsuits and quarrels, misfortune turns to good and peace is found.
Ju Men ruling a luck period with Hua Quan (Gui years) is best for plans, and all succeed; there may be lawsuits and quarrels, but misfortune turns to good. Hua Quan turns Ju Men's 'darkness' into persuasion and command.
The Nature of the Four Transformations says Hua Quan 「會巨門武曲必專大事,掌握兵符」 (see the original): Ju Men is the star Hua Quan likes best. On a Xingge chart, switch to the Decade Luck and check whether the decade's stem turns Ju Men to Hua Quan.
21巨門入限動人愁,若遇喪門事不周,士庶逢之多惹訟,居官失職有丁憂。
TranslationJu Men entering the luck period brings worry; if it meets Sang Men, affairs go amiss. Ordinary people who meet it often get into lawsuits; those in office lose their posts and go into mourning for a parent.
- 丁憂
- Mourning for a parent: an old official had to leave his post to observe it.
- 喪門
- Sang Men, the funeral-gate spirit: an annual spirit star two palaces ahead of the year's Tai Sui.
Ju Men entering a luck period brings worry; with Sang Men things go amiss, commoners get into lawsuits, and officials lose their posts and mourn a parent. Sang Men is an annual spirit star two palaces ahead of Tai Sui; how to place it is in Placing the Annual Spirits, Dou Jun and Kong Wang. Ju Men's disputes plus Sang Men's mourning are read as 「丁憂」: an old official who lost a parent had to leave office to mourn.
Today this is a period of quarrels and paperwork disputes, when the health of older family members needs attention. On a Xingge chart, switch to the Annual Luck and see which palace the annual Sang Men falls in.
22巨門限陷最乖張,無事官非鬧一場,哭泣喪禍終不免,破財嘔氣受淒涼。
TranslationJu Men fallen in the luck period is most perverse: with nothing wrong, a lawsuit flares up all the same; weeping and the disaster of mourning cannot be escaped in the end; money is lost, anger is swallowed, and life is bleak.
Ju Men fallen in a luck period is most perverse: a lawsuit out of nothing, weeping and mourning, money lost, anger swallowed, bleakness. Ju Men is fallen in Chen and Xu, so the verse is about a luck period reaching Ju Men in Chen or Xu.
Across the chapter's three luck-period verses, from 'misfortune turns to good' with Hua Quan to 'bleak' when fallen, the dividing line is the transformations and the brightness. That is the general rule for reading Ju Men: the star itself is hard to make wholly lucky, and it takes Hua Quan, Hua Lu or a temple position to turn it around.

FAQ
What kind of person has Ju Men in the Life Palace?
The Quan Shu says Ju Men's transformed qi is darkness and it governs right and wrong: the person goes forward and back, is suspicious, learns much but masters little, gets on with few, is surrounded by quarrels and rushes about toiling. In its temple the person is tall, stout, solid and refined; out of its temple, short in limb and body, thin and small.
What is the jade-in-stone pattern?
The Quan Shu says Ju Men guarding the Body or Life Palace in Zi or Wu is the 「石中隱玉格」, jade hidden in stone; meeting Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu as well, the person has lifelong blessings. But meeting Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing and Hua Ji, if the person does not die young, the man becomes a thief and the woman a prostitute. Ju Men in Zi or Wu favours people born in Ding, Ji, Gui or Xin years; for people born in Bing or Wu years it means hardship.
What does the Quan Shu say about Ju Men in a woman's chart?
The Quan Shu says a woman with Ju Men in its temple, born in a Gui or Xin year, enjoys blessings; fallen, she harms her husband and children; born in a Ding year she is extremely lewd, and 「此星在女命多有瑕玷」. The verse for a woman's chart also says Ju Men fallen in the Life Palace means lewdness and prostitution, and only as a maid or secondary wife does she escape disaster.
Is Ju Men with Hua Quan in a luck period good?
The luck-period verse says: 「巨門主限化權星,最喜求謀萬事成,雖有官災並口舌,逢凶化吉得安寧。」 When Ju Men rules the luck period and takes Hua Quan, every plan succeeds; though there are lawsuits and quarrels, misfortune turns to good. Ju Men takes Hua Quan for people born in Gui years.
