2028 Four Transformations: Tan Lang, Tai Yin, You Bi and Tian Ji

Year Ahead · 2026-10-14

On this page

2028 is a Wu Shen year. The Wu transformations are Tan Lang with Hua Lu, Tai Yin with Hua Quan, You Bi with Hua Ke and Tian Ji with Hua Ji. The year's Life Palace is the Shen box.

Compared with 2027, the Ding Wei year, two stars stay on and swap roles: Tai Yin goes from Hua Lu to Hua Quan, and Tian Ji goes from Hua Ke to Hua Ji. The Tian Ji that earned recognition in 2027 becomes the one that asks for more care in 2028. Which palace each of the four stars sits in is different for everyone, so this note takes each transformation first, then shows you how to match it to your own chart.

Why 2028 is a Wu Shen year, and when it starts

Years are counted with the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, which repeat every sixty years. 2028's stem is Wu and its branch is Shen, so it's a Wu Shen year. The last one was 1968; the next won't come until 2088. The stem sets the year's four transformations; the branch sets which box is the year's Life Palace.

Zi Wei Dou Shu changes year at the Lunar New Year, not on January 1 and not at Li Chun (the start of spring). In 2028 the Lunar New Year falls on January 26, 2028. So from January 1 to January 25, 2028, Zi Wei still counts it as the Ding Wei year and uses the 2027 transformations. The Wu transformations and the Shen-box yearly palace start on January 26. If you compare with Ba Zi or other software, the switch date may differ and a few days around it may not line up. Go by the Lunar New Year.

The Wu year transformations: Tan Lang, Tai Yin, You Bi, Tian Ji

Volume two of the Quan Shu (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu) keeps a short rhyme for the transformations, one line per stem. The Wu line names Tan Lang, the moon, Bi and Ji as the leads.

"The moon" is Tai Yin, "Bi" is You Bi and "Ji" is Tian Ji. The four take Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji in that order: Tan Lang with Hua Lu, Tai Yin with Hua Quan, You Bi with Hua Ke and Tian Ji with Hua Ji. The full set is on the Wu year transformations page, and for any other year you can enter it in the yearly transformations lookup.

The Wu year is where schools disagree most visibly on the rhyme. Some schools put the Wu year's Hua Ke on Tai Yang instead of You Bi, so different chart software may show different results. Both versions are in use. Xingge follows volume two of the Quan Shu, where the Wu year's Hua Ke goes to You Bi. If another app shows Tai Yang with Hua Ke, this is why.

What each of the four stars is saying

The Four Transformations aren't new stars. They're tags attached to a star already on your chart. Hua Lu is connection and gain, Hua Quan is wanting to take charge, Hua Ke is being seen, and Hua Ji is caring a lot and finding it hard to let go.

Tan Lang with Hua Lu: interests and people bring returns

The Quan Shu says Tan Lang transforms into Peach Blossom, and Xingge calls it "the Player": many talents, sociable, keen to try everything. Tan Lang with Hua Lu makes that curiosity easier to turn into something real. Hobbies become income and connections bring opportunities; both are common pictures. In the Wealth Palace, money is often tied to what you enjoy. In the Friends Palace, your circle is itself a resource. Just one reminder: you'll want a lot, so pick one or two things to go deep on.

Tai Yin with Hua Quan: the careful one is put in charge

The Quan Shu calls Tai Yin the lord of the Property Palace. Its nature is sensitive, reserved and security-minded. Tai Yin with Hua Quan gives this star, which rarely pushes to be heard, firmer opinions of its own. A common picture is leading people by looking after them, and being more willing to make the call on your home, where you live and what you've saved. In the Property Palace, you'll more often be the one who decides family matters. In the Spouse Palace, agreeing early on who decides what takes less effort than quietly carrying it all.

You Bi with Hua Ke: help behind the scenes gets noticed

You Bi isn't a main star. It's one of the Six Auspicious Stars, and it's about help given in private and smoothing things over between people (more on the star in You Bi). You Bi with Hua Ke can be read as: the people helping behind the scenes get seen. What you do for others, and what others do for you, is more likely to be recognised. In the Career Palace, a quiet supporting role gets credited. In the Friends Palace, introductions and making connections tend to earn you a good name.

Tian Ji with Hua Ji: slow down where you overthink

The Quan Shu says Tian Ji transforms into Goodness. It's quick-minded and loves to plan. Tian Ji with Hua Ji turns that brainpower into something hard to put down: running the same scenario again and again, revising the plan one more time, and wearing yourself out before anything starts. In the Life Palace, you tend to argue with yourself. In the Career Palace, processes and plans change a lot, and you'll feel steadier if you fix the few things that can't move first. In the Parents Palace, you may read too many layers into conversations with bosses and elders; saying what you need plainly saves more effort than guessing what they mean. Hua Ji marks where you put the most thought. The Quan Shu's passage on Hua Ji ends with advice that roughly means: in your affairs, aim for seventy percent. Leave yourself some room.

From 2027 to 2028: how the transformations hand over

Put the two years side by side and the change is clear:

Star2027 Ding Wei2028 Wu Shen
Tai YinHua LuHua Quan
Tian JiHua KeHua Ji
Tian TongHua Quannone
Ju MenHua Jinone
Tan LangnoneHua Lu
You BinoneHua Ke

Tian Ji goes from Hua Ke to Hua Ji. In 2027 Tian Ji with Hua Ke gets your analysis and planning noticed (see Tian Ji Hua Ke, palace by palace). In 2028 the same star takes Hua Ji, and the same brainpower becomes the thing to watch. If your Tian Ji sits in the Career Palace, 2027 is recognition for your planning and 2028 tends to be more thinking than doing, with plans that keep changing. The methods and reputation you built the year before make a good base for 2028, so you don't have to rethink everything from scratch.

Tai Yin goes from Hua Lu to Hua Quan. Tai Yin with Hua Lu in 2027 is slow accumulation (see Tai Yin Hua Lu, palace by palace). With Hua Quan in 2028, it becomes deciding what to do with what you've built up. The same palace moves from collecting to managing. With Tai Yin in the Wealth Palace, money builds quietly in 2027 and in 2028 it's time to decide where it goes and who manages it. With Tai Yin in the Property Palace, the previous year's work on your home adds up, and this year you're more likely to face decisions such as moving, renovating or how to divide things.

Tian Tong and Ju Men step out; Tan Lang and You Bi step in. The 2027 set leans toward thinking and speaking. 2028 adds Tan Lang's appetite for trying things and You Bi's give and take between people, so there's more reaching outward. Wherever Tan Lang with Hua Lu sits, that palace is a good place to experiment. Wherever You Bi with Hua Ke sits, the help and goodwill in that palace are more likely to be remembered.

Schools differ on a few rules. Keep the defaults if unsure; change them if your chart doesn't match one from another site.

Tan Lang's Hua Lu always sits next to Tai Yin's Hua Quan

The Wu year has an easy pattern to remember: on anyone's chart, Tan Lang with Hua Lu is always right beside Tai Yin with Hua Quan. In palace order, Tan Lang is always in the palace just before Tai Yin's. If Tai Yin is in the Life Palace, Tan Lang is in the Parents Palace. If Tai Yin is in the Spouse Palace, Tan Lang is in the Siblings Palace. If Tai Yin is in the Wealth Palace, Tan Lang is in the Children Palace. If Tai Yin is in the Career Palace, Tan Lang is in the Friends Palace. On the board, that's the next box clockwise from Tai Yin.

This comes from the placement rules of the two stars, so it holds for everyone. When you read 2028, you can treat the Hua Lu and the Hua Quan as a pair: find Tai Yin's box, and Tan Lang is next door. The matters of the two palaces are often linked. Tian Ji with Hua Ji and You Bi with Hua Ke have no fixed relation to them, so find each one separately.

The 2028 yearly Life Palace is the Shen box

2028 is a Shen year, so for everyone the year's Life Palace is the Shen box on the chart. Counting the yearly palaces counterclockwise from Shen:

Yearly palaceBranchYearly palaceBranch
LifeShenTravelYin
SiblingsWeiFriendsChou
SpouseWuCareerZi
ChildrenSiPropertyHai
WealthChenFortuneXu
HealthMaoParentsYou

Its San Fang Si Zheng is the Shen, Chen, Zi and Yin boxes. Draw your chart, find the Shen box, see which of your natal palaces it is and which stars live there, then check where the transformations fall among those four boxes. The full method for reading a year is in the lesson The Year: This Year's Theme, and how to lay the yearly palaces over your natal ones is walked through step by step in Where the 2027 Yearly Palaces Fall; the same steps work for 2028 with the Shen box in place of Wei.

Where is the Origin Palace in a Wu Shen year

The Origin Palace (Lai Yin) depends only on the stem of your birth year. It's the box whose palace stem matches your birth-year stem. For everyone born in a Wu year, the Origin Palace is the Wu box (the Wu branch, the seventh box, not to be confused with the Wu stem). So if "the Origin Palace for a Wu Shen year" means someone born in the Wu Shen year of 1968, the answer is the Wu box. Which of your palaces that box is depends on where your Life Palace sits.

One thing to keep straight: the 2028 year doesn't change anyone's Origin Palace. It follows your birth year and stays the same for life. What 2028 changes is the yearly transformations and the yearly Life Palace. The Origin Palace is a later school's idea, not something from the Quan Shu, so read it as a question: does this matter especially to you?

Born in a Wu year: transformations stacked on one star

If you were born in 1968, 1978, 1988, 1998, 2008 or 2018, your birth year was also a Wu year, and your birth-year transformations match 2028's exactly. If you were born in January or February, go by the lunar year: a birthday before that year's Lunar New Year belongs to the previous year, a Ding year, with different transformations.

In that case the same star is tagged twice. Tan Lang with Hua Lu at birth and again this year is ease on top of ease in that palace; Tian Ji with Hua Ji at birth and again this year means that palace asks for more patience in 2028. Where the two layers stack, you tend to feel it more, so it's worth a closer look, but it doesn't mean anything in particular will happen.

FAQ

What are the 2028 Four Transformations?

2028 is a Wu Shen year, and the Wu transformations are Tan Lang with Hua Lu, Tai Yin with Hua Quan, You Bi with Hua Ke and Tian Ji with Hua Ji. Xingge follows volume two of the Quan Shu; some schools give the Wu year's Hua Ke to Tai Yang. These stars are on every chart, and the palaces they sit in on yours show where the year flows more easily and where it asks for more care.

When does 2028 start in Zi Wei Dou Shu?

At the Lunar New Year, which is January 26, 2028. From January 1 to January 25, 2028, Zi Wei Dou Shu still counts it as the Ding Wei year and uses the 2027 transformations.

Where is the Origin Palace for a Wu Shen year?

The Origin Palace depends only on your birth-year stem. Anyone born in a Wu year, including the Wu Shen year of 1968, has the Origin Palace in the Wu box. Which of your palaces that is depends on where your Life Palace sits, and the 2028 year doesn't change anyone's Origin Palace.

What should I watch with Tian Ji's Hua Ji in 2028?

Tian Ji's Hua Ji is about overthinking and plans that keep changing. The palace it sits in on your chart shows which kind of matter you'll tend to run through again and again. Fix the few things that can't move, aim for seventy percent on the rest, and you'll spend less effort than rethinking everything each time.
