Where the chart lines up
Working side by side with his brother Gustav
Lilienthal and his younger brother Gustav worked together for many years on technical, social and cultural projects. As schoolboys the two studied bird flight together and even built wings strapped to the body; later, his more than 2,000 glider flights from 1891 onwards were also made together with Gustav. His chart shows Tian Ji (Li) with Hua Ji (Transformation of Obstruction) in the Siblings Palace. The Siblings Palace stands for brothers and sisters, and Hua Ji marks where thought and effort go, which lines up with the two brothers throwing themselves into research together.
Source ↗First glides in the spring of 1891
In the spring of 1891 (nominal age 44), on the slope of a sand pit on a hill between the villages of Derwitz and Krielow, west of Potsdam, Lilienthal made his first jumps and glides, covering about 25 metres; his flight attempts in 1891 are seen as the beginning of human flight. In 1891 his annual Life Palace moves to his natal Career Palace. The Career Palace stands for career and the work in hand, so the year's focus falls on his flying experiments.
Source ↗A small engine that brought financial freedom
Lilienthal was also an inventor, and devised a small engine that worked on a system of tubular boilers and was much safer than other small engines of the time; this invention gave him the financial freedom to focus on aviation. He also founded his own company to make boilers and steam engines. His chart shows Tan Lang (Miao) with Hua Lu (Transformation of Wealth) in the Wealth Palace. The Wealth Palace stands for income, and Hua Lu is money coming in: earning from invention to fund his aviation research fits this star.
