Where the chart lines up

A biography while he was still alive

Michelangelo was the first Western artist whose biography was published while he was alive. In Giorgio Vasari's Lives of 1550 he was the only living artist given a biography, and Vasari called him divino, divine; in 1553 came a second biography by Ascanio Condivi. In his chart, the Life Palace holds Zi Wei (Wang) with Hua Ke. Hua Ke is reputation and being seen, and in the Life Palace the fame settles on the man himself, which lines up with his being the subject of biographies in his own lifetime.

Taking on St. Peter's in 1546

In 1546 (nominal age 72) he was appointed architect of St. Peter's Basilica; in the same year he designed the paving pattern of the Piazza del Campidoglio and began designing the upper floor of the Palazzo Farnese. In his chart these years fall in the Decade Luck for nominal ages 65–74, whose Four Transformations send Lian Zhen (Ping) with Hua Lu (Transformation of Wealth) into his natal Career Palace. Hua Lu stands for gains and opportunities; landing in the palace of work, it lines up with his taking on several building projects at this time.

A papal tomb that took forty years

In 1505 Pope Julius II called him to Rome to build the pope's tomb, originally planned with forty statues and to be finished in five years. He worked on the commission from 1505 to 1545, often pulled away by the pope to do other work. In his chart, the Parents Palace holds Tai Yin (Xian) with Hua Ji (Transformation of Obstruction). The Parents Palace also covers elders and superiors, and Hua Ji marks where care and effort must go, which fits this long-running commission from the pope.

Michelangelo did more than sculpt and paint: he also wrote more than three hundred sonnets and madrigals, and in his later years he and the poet Vittoria Colonna exchanged sonnets.
