Give two people the same white shirt, and on one of them it just looks more put together. Give two people the same small shop, and one arranges it so well that customers want to take photos. Practitioners often use the Feng Ge star to talk about this knack for making the whole thing look right. It is a paired with Long Chi. It carries very little weight, but it says a lot about the details a person cares about. Draw your chart first and see where your Feng Ge lands.

What kind of star is Feng Ge

Xingge reads the Long Chi and Feng Ge pair as taste and ingenuity. The two divide the work a little differently: Long Chi leans toward finished work and craft, Feng Ge toward presentation, bearing and overall style, that is, the you that other people see first. "Feng Ge" (Phoenix Pavilion) was originally the name of a palace pavilion. In 684, the first year of Empress Wu Zetian's Guangzhai reign, the Secretariat was even renamed the Feng Ge, and the old name was only restored in the Shenlong years. The name carries a sense of dignity and elegance, and the minor star that borrowed it reads the same way. The talent and prestige stars lesson covers this group of minor stars together.

How Feng Ge is placed

Feng Ge goes by the branch of your birth year. The An Long Chi Feng Ge Jue in volume two of the (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu) reads:

Long Chi: Zi at Chen, forward. Feng Ge: Zi at Xu, backward.

Feng Ge treats the Xu palace as the Zi year and counts backward to your birth-year branch. So for a Zi year Feng Ge is in Xu, for Chou in You, for Yin in Shen, and so on backward, with a Hai year in Hai. Long Chi counts forward from Chen, so the two move in opposite directions: for people born in a Mao or You year, Long Chi and Feng Ge share a palace; for people born in a Zi or Wu year, the two are in . The Long Chi article lays out how they relate in the other years.

The Quan Shu leaves only the verse

In the Quan Shu, Feng Ge has only this placement line and no commentary. Today's talk of taste, presentation and talent is all later common practice. So read Feng Ge lightly: it fills in details, and doesn't decide whether a palace is good or bad.

Feng Ge in key palaces

  • Life Palace: you care how you come across, and you have your own standards for clothes, conversation and the things you use. Your first impression is often a plus.
  • Travel Palace: away from home, taste and talent work in your favor and people remember you easily; how you dress and speak is your calling card.
  • Career Palace: suited to work about presentation and style, such as branding, visual design, fashion, interior design, window display or event planning. At work, you care a lot about whether the result looks good.
  • Wealth Palace: money tends to go on clothes, objects and quality of life, and you may also earn through your eye for beauty. Tasteful things are worth spending on, but remember to set a budget.
  • Property Palace: your home has style; the place you live shows your taste.

Feng Ge with main stars, transformations and Annual Luck

  • Main stars and the Six Auspicious Stars: when Feng Ge meets Wen Chang or Wen Qu, the refined flavor is more pronounced. Sharing a palace with main stars that like to be seen, such as Tai Yang or Tan Lang, presentation and stage presence lift each other; with Tian Fu, it's a low-key but discerning kind of taste.
  • The four transformations: with in Feng Ge's palace, your image and work are readily well received; with , your eye for beauty readily turns into opportunity; with , you are often too picky about appearances or the finished product, so remind yourself that eighty percent can be good enough to hand in.
  • Annual Luck: when the reaches Feng Ge's palace, it's a good time to refresh how you present yourself, such as updating your portfolio, rearranging your workspace or building your personal brand.

How different schools read Feng Ge

Today's common placement is the Quan Shu's "Zi at Xu, backward," and it's the same if you switch Xingge to Zhongzhou placement.

Another placement in the Daoist Canon edition: in the Daoist Canon edition of Zi Wei Dou Shu (attributed to Chen Tuan, in the Ming supplement to the Daoist Canon), Feng Ge is placed "at Xu, starting the Zi hour and counting backward to your birth hour." That goes by the birth hour, not the birth year. The Xingge chart follows the Quan Shu and uses the birth year.

In the reading, the Daoist Canon edition says Long Chi and Feng Ge "govern literary writing and success in the imperial exams," so some fortune-telling books link them to exams and academic honors. Xingge reads the two stars as one line, mainly as taste and ingenuity.

FAQ

What does the Feng Ge star represent?

Feng Ge is a talent star in Zi Wei Dou Shu: taste, presentation and overall style, placed by counting backward from Xu by the birth-year branch. Whichever palace it is in, that palace's matters tend to be done with attention to how they look, and done with dignity.

Are Feng Ge and Long Chi always together?

Not necessarily in the same palace. Long Chi counts forward from Chen and Feng Ge backward from Xu, so only people born in a Mao or You year have the two together; for Zi and Wu years they are opposite each other, and in other years they sit in a trine or one palace apart. Read the two palaces together.

What are people with Feng Ge in the Life Palace like?

Practitioners usually read them as caring how they come across, having taste and making a good first impression. The thing to watch is not putting too much energy into surface details; the substance needs to keep up too.

What does the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu say about Feng Ge?

The Quan Shu leaves only the placement line in volume two, "Long Chi: Zi at Chen, forward. Feng Ge: Zi at Xu, backward," with no commentary. Readings like taste and presentation all come from later common practice.
