"Hua gai" originally meant the ornate canopy held over an emperor's head. There is also a group of stars in the sky called Hua Gai, in the Purple Forbidden Enclosure; the San Ming Tong Hui, a Ming-dynasty classic of Bazi (Four Pillars), says "its shape is like a canopy, always covering the seat of the great emperor." Hua Gai (Canopy) on the chart borrows this sense: something over your head that keeps a little distance between you and the crowd. Aloof, with taste, especially drawn to deeper things like art, religion and philosophy; for you, time alone is recharging, not lonely. It is a very light that gives a palace an undertone of "keeping a little distance from the crowd." To find out which palace Hua Gai falls in, draw your chart.

What kind of star is the Hua Gai minor star

Hua Gai is neither a helpful star nor a challenging one; it is a small star with personality. The San Ming Tong Hui, in its chapter on Jiang Xing and Hua Gai, says "whoever has Hua Gai in their chart mostly leans toward solitude; even in high rank one cannot escape being alone; read it as monk, Daoist or artist." Wang Tingzhi also calls Hua Gai "a sign of religious faith and philosophy," and the modern readings of aloofness, religion and the arts all come from here. The good side is focus, a mind of your own, and your own sense of beauty. Where you tend to get stuck is being too lofty, not much wanting to follow the crowd, and letting the distance from others grow too wide. The stars with heavy names lesson also covers Hua Gai, reading it as a distinctive taste.

How Hua Gai is placed: by birth-year branch

Hua Gai goes by your birth-year branch, with each of the four trines landing in one storage palace:

  • Born in a Yin, Wu or Xu year: in Xu
  • Born in a Shen, Zi or Chen year: in Chen
  • Born in a Si, You or Chou year: in Chou
  • Born in a Hai, Mao or Wei year: in Wei

So Hua Gai only lands in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei. People born in the same group of years all have Hua Gai in the same cell. Hua Gai isn't in the placement verses of the (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu); it was added later, and Xingge places it on the chart by the common method.

Same position as the General God Hua Gai

The also have a Hua Gai: counting from Jiang Xing, the fifth position is Hua Gai. For Yin, Wu and Xu years Jiang Xing is in Wu, and counting on to the fifth position lands right on Xu, the same as the table above. So on the natal chart, the Hua Gai minor star and the General God Hua Gai share a palace; in the annual chart, the Jiang Qian set is placed again by that year's branch, and its Hua Gai moves too, describing which palace that year suits settling down and stepping back to think. The Bo Shi, Jiang Qian and Sui Qian lesson explains the full Jiang Qian set.

The Quan Shu's "Double Hua Gai" is not this star

The table of patterns in volume one of the Quan Shu has this entry:

Double Hua Gai: Lu Cun and Hua Lu sitting in the Life Palace and meeting Di Kong and Di Jie.

(Quan Shu, volume one)

Here "Hua Gai" is borrowed to describe Lu Cun and Hua Lu stacked in the Life Palace and then meeting Di Kong and Di Jie. It has nothing to do with the Hua Gai minor star. When you search for "Double Hua Gai," this entry is mostly what turns up; for how to read Lu stars meeting Di Kong and Di Jie, see Lu Feng Kong Jie.
