What is the Tian Shang star?

Draw your chart and see which palace Tian Shang falls in
Tian Shang (Heavenly Injury) is an unusual minor star: it doesn't go by your birth year or month, and instead sits in the same palace on every chart. The ancients used it to read luck periods, taking a little more care when one reached it. The name sounds heavy, but Xingge reads it quite ordinarily: for a while, resources may not quite connect, so slow the pace a little. What kind of star is Tian Shang
The Zhu Xing Wen Da Lun chapter in volume one of the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu) discusses Tian Shang and Tian Shi in the same passage:
Tian Shang is heaven's spirit of emptiness and depletion; Tian Shi is heaven's spirit of messengers.
"Emptiness and depletion" is Tian Shang's basic meaning: energy, money and time scatter more easily. The same passage goes on to say that when a luck period meets them, "if auspicious stars are many it is a blessing, and the trouble is lighter": with more helpful stars in the same palace, the effect is lighter. When the ancients read Tian Shang, they always looked at the combination, never at the one star alone.
How Tian Shang is placed
The verse for placing Tian Shang and Tian Shi in volume two of the Quan Shu:
Six places before the Life Palace is Tian Shang; six places after it, Tian Shi.
The note after the verse is more direct: "Tian Shang is placed in the Servants Palace, Tian Shi in the Health Palace." The Servants Palace is what we now call the Friends Palace. So whatever year you were born, Tian Shang is in the Friends Palace and Tian Shi is in the Health Palace. And between the Friends Palace and the Health Palace sits the Travel Palace.
The Zhongzhou school places it differently
This is Tian Shang's most common school difference. The Zhongzhou school holds that for yang men and yin women it goes as above, while for yin men and yang women the two swap: Tian Shang in the Health Palace and Tian Shi in the Friends Palace. Xingge follows the Quan Shu by default; switch to the Zhongzhou school in the chart's advanced settings and they swap by this rule. Both schools agree on one thing: Tian Shang and Tian Shi flank the Travel Palace, one on each side. The schools page sums up the differences between them.
Reading Tian Shang on the natal chart
Since Tian Shang is always in the Friends Palace, on the natal chart it is really a small footnote to that palace: dealings with people tend to involve some drain. You may spend a lot of energy on friends' affairs, find that things you lend don't easily come back, or put more into a partnership than you get out.
Your friends aren't the problem. Tian Shang's reminder is to keep boundaries in Friends Palace matters: help within your means, and put money dealings in writing. The Friends Palace's main stars and transformations are the main story; Tian Shang only adds a note on the side.
Reading Tian Shang in luck periods
Where Tian Shang really gets used is in luck periods. Volume three of the Quan Shu, in its chapter on the fortunes of the ten-year period, says:
In both the major and minor periods, and in the year of Tai Sui, beware of walking into the place flanked by Tian Shang and Tian Shi.
This means that when the Decade Luck, Minor Luck or Annual Luck reaches the palace flanked by Tian Shang and Tian Shi, which is the natal Travel Palace position, the ancients were especially on guard. The verse in volume two also calls being caught between Tian Shang and Tian Shi "the added flanked place." The flanking palaces lesson explains the logic of flanking clearly.
For a luck period reaching the Tian Shang palace itself, the old verse uses the story of Confucius "running out of food in Chen": however capable you are, there are times when things don't quite connect. Read for today, this period suits:
- Leaving a buffer. Keep a little extra money and time in reserve, and don't fill your schedule and budget to the brim.
- Slowing the pace of going out. For long trips, moving house or a change of setting, prepare one step further.
- Promising others only what you can manage. Take care of your own footing first, then help others.
If the same palace has helpful stars like Lu Cun, Hua Lu, or Zuo Fu and You Bi, that is what the ancients meant by "if auspicious stars are many it is a blessing," and the reminder is lighter still.
FAQ
What does the Tian Shang star represent?
Tian Shang is a minor star in Zi Wei Dou Shu. The Quan Shu calls it heaven's spirit of emptiness and depletion. It always sits in the Friends Palace and is mainly used to read luck periods; today it is read as a reminder that resources may not quite connect for a while, and to slow the pace.
Is Tian Shang always in the Friends Palace?
By the Quan Shu's method, Tian Shang is always in the Friends Palace (the old texts call it the Servants Palace), and Tian Shi is always in the Health Palace. The Zhongzhou school swaps them for yin men and yang women, putting Tian Shang in the Health Palace. Xingge follows the Quan Shu by default, and you can switch to the Zhongzhou school in the chart settings.
What should I watch for when the Annual Luck reaches Tian Shang?
The old texts warn to take care when a luck period reaches Tian Shang, and say it is lighter when the palace has many helpful stars. Today it is read as keeping a buffer of money and time for a while, and preparing one step further for trips and for promises to others. There's no need to treat it as a prediction.
What does it mean that Tian Shang and Tian Shi flank the Travel Palace?
Tian Shang is in the Friends Palace and Tian Shi in the Health Palace, which puts the Travel Palace right between them. The Quan Shu calls a luck period entering this flanked position "the added flanked place," and Xingge reads it as slowing the pace of travel and change during that period.
