Chart settings (advanced)

Schools differ on a few rules. Keep the defaults if unsure; change them if your chart doesn't match one from another site.

The name Yin Sha (Hidden Sha) sounds a little mysterious, and plenty of people who see it on their chart want to ask: is there something unseen going on? In fact Yin Sha is a very light , which later texts use to describe "the layer under the table": feelings nobody says out loud, conditions that never made it into the contract, friction between people that is hard to see clearly. To find out which palace your Yin Sha is in, draw your chart.

What kind of star is Yin Sha

First, where it comes from: neither the star-placement verses nor the Zhu Xing Wen Da Lun chapter of the (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu) includes Yin Sha. It was added to chart-making later. The common view files it among the challenging stars, governing hidden obstacles and interference that is hard to notice, and many books simply say it stands for people working against you behind your back. Wang Tingzhi of the Zhongzhou school also says most books read Yin Sha as running into such people, and adds that on its own it does little; it only shows clearly when it shares a palace with challenging stars.

Xingge reads it more plainly: in the palace holding Yin Sha, that palace's affairs often have "a part nobody spelled out." The good side is that you are very sensitive to atmosphere and to what goes unsaid; when someone is unhappy but hasn't said so, you are often the first to notice. The side to watch is a tendency to overthink and over-suspect. As the stars with heavy names lesson says, stars like this are read as reminders, not predictions.

How Yin Sha is placed

Yin Sha goes by your lunar birth month. The common method is:

  • Born in the 1st or 7th month: in Yin
  • Born in the 2nd or 8th month: in Zi
  • Born in the 3rd or 9th month: in Xu
  • Born in the 4th or 10th month: in Shen
  • Born in the 5th or 11th month: in Wu
  • Born in the 6th or 12th month: in Chen

Starting from Yin, it steps back two palaces each month, completing a round every six months, so Yin Sha only ever lands in Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen or Xu, the six yang palaces. Most schools place it the same way; where they differ is the leap month. By default, Xingge counts days 1 to 15 of a leap month as that month and days 16 onward as the next month, and the chart's advanced settings let you count the whole leap month as that month instead. Other stars placed by birth month include Tian Xing, Tian Yao and Jie Shen.

Yin Sha in key palaces

  • Life Palace: strong intuition and good at reading the room, but also prone to assuming the worst. Confirm first, then judge, and the sensitivity becomes a strength.
  • Spouse Palace: there are often things left unsaid in the relationship. Rather than guess, ask directly. Saying what matters to you beats quietly keeping score.
  • Wealth Palace: money matters tend to get stuck on details, such as terms you didn't read closely or hidden fees. Read it through once more before you sign or pay.
  • Career Palace: you often sense undercurrents and communication gaps at work. Keep written records of anything important, and put assignments and confirmations in writing.
  • Friends Palace: in your circle, things often pass through several people before they reach you. Set what you hear aside and check directly with the person involved.
  • Fortune Palace: you often feel a vague unease you can't quite name. A regular routine and a hobby that lets your mind go blank help more than going over it again and again.

Reading Yin Sha with main stars, transformations and luck periods

Yin Sha is light, so look at the main stars and transformations first, then at what it adds to the palace.

  • With challenging stars: Wang Tingzhi's reading is that Yin Sha pulls the effect of a challenging star in the same palace "into the dark": Qing Yang's competitiveness becomes rivalry behind your back, and Tuo Luo's delay becomes a drag nobody mentions. Without a challenging star in the palace, Yin Sha's reminder is very light.
  • With the transformations: with Hua Ke in the same palace, things come out into the open more easily and can be talked through. With Hua Ji in the same palace, the knot inside is harder to undo; as the Hua Ji lesson says, that is where you care the most.
  • With luck periods: when the or reaches the palace with Yin Sha, an extra round of checking and an extra written record for that palace's affairs during that time is plenty.

FAQ

What does the Yin Sha star represent?

Yin Sha is a minor star in Zi Wei Dou Shu, placed by lunar birth month. Later texts say it governs hidden obstacles; Xingge reads it as that palace's affairs often having a part nobody spelled out, and you being especially sensitive to atmosphere. It is very light, and is read after the main stars and transformations.

Is Yin Sha in the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu?

No. Neither the Quan Shu's star-placement verses nor its Zhu Xing Wen Da Lun chapter includes Yin Sha. It was added to chart-making later, so there is no classical text to check it against, and readings follow the common view.

How is Yin Sha placed?

By lunar birth month: in Yin for the 1st and 7th months, Zi for the 2nd and 8th, Xu for the 3rd and 9th, Shen for the 4th and 10th, Wu for the 5th and 11th, and Chen for the 6th and 12th. So Yin Sha only ever lands in the six yang palaces.

How do I work with Yin Sha in the Life Palace?

Treat your intuition as a lead, not a conclusion. If something feels off, ask directly, keep a record, and check once more. Used to notice problems, sensitivity is a real strength.
