Schools differ on a few rules. Keep the defaults if unsure; change them if your chart doesn't match one from another site.

There are two stars on the chart with "jie" (relief) in their names: Jie Shen and Nian Jie (Year Relief). Many people assume one is a duplicate, but one goes by birth month and the other by birth year. Nian Jie goes by year, and its placement is exactly the "Jie Shen" written in the (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu). Both are helpful , read as stuck things having room to turn around. What kind of star is Nian Jie

Xingge reads Nian Jie in one group with Jie Shen, Tian De and Yue De: when you hit a hard patch, people or chance often help you through; those who speak up first and set their pride aside see the turn come sooner. It is light, doesn't change the main star's personality, and is more like leaving that palace one extra way out.

How Nian Jie is placed: by birth-year branch

The verse for placing Tian De, Yue De and Jie Shen in volume two of the Quan Shu:

For Jie Shen, start Zi at Xu and count backward to the Tai Sui of the birth year.

This means: treat the Xu palace as the Zi year and count backward to the branch of your birth year; that is where Nian Jie sits.

  • Zi year in Xu, Chou year in You, Yin year in Shen, Mao year in Wei.
  • Chen year in Wu, Si year in Si, Wu year in Chen, Wei year in Mao.
  • Shen year in Yin, You year in Chou, Xu year in Zi, Hai year in Hai.

So people of the same zodiac sign all have Nian Jie in the same palace. Those born in Si and Hai years are a special case: Nian Jie lands right in their own zodiac sign's cell. The zodiac year follows the lunar calendar.

Written in the same verse as Tian De and Yue De

The first half of the same verse covers Tian De and Yue De: "Tian De starts Zi at You" and "Yue De starts Zi at Zi," both counting forward. The verse says to count to "the Tai Sui of the current year"; only Jie Shen is spelled out as "of the birth year." The Tian De and Yue De on Xingge's chart are both placed by this verse (Tian De starting from You, Yue De from Zi); Yue De differs from most charting software, and the Yue De article has the details. The ancients put these three together because their meanings are close, all carrying a sense of "virtue and relief," and Xingge reads them as one group too.

The month-based Jie Shen was added later, and some call it "Yue Jie" (month relief). Wang Tingzhi says Yue Jie carries more force than Nian Jie, and that Nian Jie only takes effect when an Annual Luck meets Nian Jie again; an article on the Zi Wei Tai site also says Nian Jie is much weaker. These are later views; the Quan Shu doesn't say so.

Nian Jie in key palaces

  • Life Palace: when you hit a hard patch, people or chance often help you through; keep goodwill in your heart, and the turn comes faster.
  • Spouse Palace: "untying" cuts both ways: stuck things come undone, and a relationship that holds two people together can loosen too. Wang Tingzhi warns that Jie Shen and Nian Jie in the Spouse Palace aren't entirely good, so read this palace as: talk through any knots early, and don't let distance slowly grow.
  • Wealth Palace: when money can't be stretched for a while, there is often a way to work it out. Talk it over with someone first, and don't rush to cut your losses.
  • Career Palace: when work gets stuck there is often room to turn it around, and someone often speaks up for you. Get through this stretch before you decide.
  • Parents Palace: knots with elders mostly come undone. Giving way first costs you nothing, and the relationship warms again.

Reading Nian Jie with main stars, transformations and luck periods

  • With Hua Ji in the same palace: what you care about still gets stuck, but has a better chance of loosening. As the Hua Ji lesson says, Hua Ji is where you put the most care, and Nian Jie gives that care a way forward.
  • With challenging stars in the same palace: the clashes and grinding of Qing Yang and Tuo Luo are still there, softened a little, so there's more room to set things right.
  • With Jie Shen in the same palace: the year and month "relief" stars together give that palace even more room to turn things around.
  • The Decade Luck or Annual Luck reaching the Nian Jie palace: practitioners often read it as a time when things stuck for a while have a better chance of shifting. The Decade Luck lesson explains how each ten-year stretch unfolds.

Nian Jie doesn't make problems disappear, and it doesn't turn Hua Ji into Hua Lu. Treating it as "someone is willing to help, and there's a way out" is more accurate than treating it as "everything will be fine."
