Chart settings (advanced)

Schools differ on a few rules. Keep the defaults if unsure; change them if your chart doesn't match one from another site.

When things get stuck, some people always seem to wait it out until a turn comes: a fight can still be patched up, money that couldn't be stretched finds a way in the end. Practitioners looking at charts like these often find Jie Shen (Relief Spirit) in one of the palaces. It is a helpful carrying the sense of "untying." It doesn't make problems disappear, but it gives stuck things more room to turn around. To see which palace your Jie Shen is in, draw your chart.

What kind of star is Jie Shen

Xingge reads Jie Shen in one group with Nian Jie, Tian De and Yue De: when you hit a hard patch, people or chance often help you through; keep goodwill in your heart, and the turn comes faster. It is a helpful star, but light, more like leaving that palace one extra way out.

How Jie Shen is placed: by birth month

The Jie Shen on Xingge's chart goes by lunar birth month, in pairs of months:

  • Born in the 1st or 2nd month: in Shen.
  • Born in the 3rd or 4th month: in Xu.
  • Born in the 5th or 6th month: in Zi.
  • Born in the 7th or 8th month: in Yin.
  • Born in the 9th or 10th month: in Chen.
  • Born in the 11th or 12th month: in Wu.

So Jie Shen only ever lands in Shen, Xu, Zi, Yin, Chen or Wu, the six yang-branch palaces. If you were born in a leap month, the leap-month rule in the chart settings decides which month you count as.

Not placed the same way as the Quan Shu's Jie Shen

There's a crossover of names here. The Jie Shen written in the verse for placing Tian De, Yue De and Jie Shen in volume two of the (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu) is placed by birth year:

For Jie Shen, start Zi at Xu and count backward to the Tai Sui of the birth year.

That one is marked Nian Jie on Xingge's charts. This month-based star is also called "Yue Jie" (month relief) in later texts, and most charting today simply marks it Jie Shen. The two mean much the same; one goes by year, the other by month. Wang Tingzhi says Yue Jie carries more force than Nian Jie, and that Nian Jie only takes effect when an Annual Luck meets Nian Jie again; an article on the Zi Wei Tai site also says Nian Jie is much weaker. These are later views; the Quan Shu doesn't say so.

Jie Shen in key palaces

  • Life Palace: when you hit a hard patch, people or chance often help you through; keep goodwill in your heart, and the turn comes faster.
  • Spouse Palace: the "untying" of Jie Shen cuts both ways: stuck things come undone, and a relationship that holds two people together can loosen too. Wang Tingzhi makes a point of saying Jie Shen in the Spouse Palace isn't entirely good, so read this palace as: talk through any knots early, and don't let distance slowly grow.
  • Wealth Palace: when money can't be stretched for a while, there is often a way to work it out. Talk it over with someone first, and don't rush to cut your losses.
  • Career Palace: when work gets stuck there is often room to turn it around, and someone often speaks up for you. Don't rush to give up; get through this stretch first.
  • Fortune Palace: knots in your heart often come undone slowly on their own. When you feel low, just give it some time.

Reading Jie Shen with main stars, transformations and luck periods

Jie Shen is most often looked at when it shares a palace with challenging stars or Hua Ji:

  • With Hua Ji in the same palace: what you care about still gets stuck, but has a better chance of loosening. Talking to someone is often the first step to untying it.
  • With challenging stars like Qing Yang or Tuo Luo in the same palace: the clashes and the grinding are still there, only softened a little, so there's more room to set things right.
  • With Tian De or Yue De in the same palace or in the San Fang Si Zheng: several "relief" and "virtue" stars together give that palace even more room to turn things around.
  • The Decade Luck or Annual Luck reaching the Jie Shen palace: it can be read as a time when things stuck for a while have a better chance of shifting. The Annual Luck lesson explains how to find which palace each year reaches.

Jie Shen doesn't replace the main star's personality, and it doesn't turn Hua Ji into Hua Lu. Treating it as "there's a way out" is more accurate than treating it as "everything will be fine."

FAQ

What does the Jie Shen star represent?

Jie Shen is a helpful minor star, read as stuck things finding a way out and knots coming undone, with people or chance often helping when you hit a hard patch. It is light; it doesn't make problems disappear, and is more like leaving that palace one extra way out.

How is Jie Shen placed?

The Jie Shen on Xingge's chart goes by lunar birth month, in pairs: Shen for the 1st and 2nd months, Xu for the 3rd and 4th, Zi for the 5th and 6th, Yin for the 7th and 8th, Chen for the 9th and 10th, and Wu for the 11th and 12th. It only ever lands in the six yang-branch palaces.

What is the difference between Jie Shen and Nian Jie?

Jie Shen goes by birth month; Nian Jie goes by birth-year branch. The Quan Shu's "for Jie Shen, start Zi at Xu" is the year-based kind, marked Nian Jie on Xingge's charts. The two mean much the same, both about turning things around and untying knots; Wang Tingzhi holds that Yue Jie carries more force than Nian Jie.

What happens when Jie Shen shares a palace with Hua Ji?

Hua Ji marks where you care the most and get stuck most easily. Jie Shen gives that stuckness a better chance of loosening, but doesn't make it disappear. In that case, talk it over with someone first; the turn often starts with a conversation.
