The Spouse Palace covers love and partnership: the kind of person you are drawn to and how you tend to behave in a relationship. One classic technique treats your Spouse Palace as your partner's Life Palace inside your chart. So comparing it with the star in their actual Life Palace is a way of holding the partner you imagine up against the person in front of you. The opposite palace of the Spouse Palace is the Career Palace, which is why "work keeps us from seeing each other" often shows up in this pair.
Hong Luan (the Red Phoenix star) is placed by your birth-year branch. The placement rhyme in Volume 2 of the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu) says:
Where it sits is Hong Luan's palace; Tian Xi sits opposite, never astray.
Hong Luan and Tian Xi (the Heavenly Joy star) always face each other across the chart. The lines that follow tie the pair to marriage and happy news for the young, and call them lucky stars before thirty. How to read the two charts together
Life Palace landings: the role they play in your chart
Take the branch of their Life Palace and find it in your chart. If it lands in your Spouse Palace, they stir up how you feel in close relationships. In your Fortune Palace, they move your moods and sense of contentment. In your Life Palace, they feel like another version of you.
These landings come in pairs. If they land in your Spouse Palace, you land in their Fortune Palace. If they land in your Life Palace, you land in theirs.
Birth-year transformations: what you bring each other
The heavenly stem of their birth year turns four stars into Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji. Where those stars sit in your chart is the flying-star reading. The palace their Hua Lu lands in is where they naturally make life easier for you. The palace their Hua Ji lands in is where you are most likely to worry about them. An example: a Zi Wei Life Palace and a Tian Xiang Life Palace

- Hua Lu: their Tian Ji Hua Lu lands in your Siblings Palace, so they tend to make siblings and peers easier for you. Your Tai Yin Hua Lu lands in their Children Palace, so you tend to make children and juniors easier for them.
- Hua Ji: their Tai Yin Hua Ji lands in your Health Palace, so you are most likely to worry about them around health and wellbeing. Your Ju Men Hua Ji lands in their Siblings Palace, so they are most likely to worry about you around siblings and peers.

The partner you picture and the person you're with don't match
Most couples find that the stars in one person's Spouse Palace differ from the other's Life Palace star. Your Spouse Palace is your picture of a partner. Their Life Palace is who they actually are. Try saying "I assumed you would..." out loud and asking what they really think. Reading about their own Life Palace star helps more than fitting them into your Spouse Palace.
One of you wants to commit, the other is still looking
When one Spouse Palace reads as fast and the other as slow to settle, one of you will tend to push and the other to hold back. Agree on a set time to talk about the future, such as at your one-year mark, and don't press for an answer in between.
The same argument keeps coming back
Whatever palace a Hua Ji lands in tends to come up again and again. The Siblings or Friends Palace often means friend groups. The Wealth Palace often means who pays. The Career Palace often means work hours. Set ground rules for that area early, such as how you split date costs or how often you meet.
When to meet the family, and when to talk about marriage
Start with each birth-chart Hong Luan. In the Parents or Property Palace, family opinions carry weight, so introduce your partner early. In the Friends Palace, take your friends' view seriously. In the Life Palace, you tend to decide for yourself. Then look at Annual Luck. Between ages 19 and 45 (counted the traditional way, from 1 at birth), when yearly Hong Luan reaches your Life Palace, you tend to think about the next step. When it reaches your Spouse Palace, the other person is more likely to make the move. From 26 to 45, a year when Tian Xi reaches your Life or Spouse Palace tends to bring news like an engagement or a wedding.
