In the weekly meeting you're still working through the list of risks, and your coworker has already told the manager "we can ship this week." Afterward you feel they talked over you, and they feel you're slow. In Zi Wei Dou Shu, a reading for two peers has both people look at their own Friends Palace and Career Palace, then at where each Life Palace and each set of birth-year transformations lands in the other chart.

The short version:

  • Formula: coworker compatibility = both Friends Palaces + both Career Palaces + where each Life Palace lands + how the birth-year Hua Lu and Hua Ji fly.
  • Which palaces: you both stand in the same place. The Friends Palace shows how you work alongside peers; the Career Palace shows how you get things done.
  • The single biggest signal: which of your palaces their Life Palace lands in. If it's your Career Palace, this person is tied tightly to your work.
  • A clue for dividing the work: the "tone between you" line in the result, based on the star type of each person's Life Palace star.
  • Weight: where Life Palaces land and how transformations fly lead the reading. The stars in the palaces set the tone, and Ba Zi is a side note.

Which palaces, and why

The Friends Palace covers people on your own level. One teacher describes it as classmates, coworkers and friends: peers of a similar age and standing. In that teacher's view, Hua Ke landing here brings help from coworkers and the people under you. Between a boss and a report, the report reads the Parents Palace and the boss reads the Friends Palace; two peers both read the Friends Palace.

The Career Palace is the work itself. Here it shows each person's working habits: think it through before moving, or adjust as you go; split the work up front, or carry it alone.

The Quan Shu (the classic Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu) has a line in Volume One, in the "Taiwei Fu":

When Lu sits in the servants' palace, even with office you still run about.

The servants' palace is the old name for the Friends Palace, and the line means Lu Cun sitting there: the benefit flows to the people around you, and even with a title you stay busy. In modern terms, the team gains from you, so make sure your own part gets said out loud.

Reading the two charts together

Step one: where each Life Palace lands. Place the other person's Life Palace branch on your chart and see which palace it falls in. In your Career Palace, they're bound up with your work. In your Siblings Palace, they feel like a teammate at your shoulder. In your Parents Palace, their opinion weighs on you even at the same level.

Step two: the birth-year transformations. Where their Hua Lu lands in your chart is the area they tend to make easier for you. Where their Hua Ji lands is the area you're most likely to worry about because of them. Hua Quan is a push, and it can also bring a tug-of-war over who leads.

Here is one pair, run through our engine. Take you with Lian Zhen in the Life Palace, and a coworker with Zi Wei in theirs:

  • The relationship palaces: your Friends Palace holds Tai Yang, and your Career Palace holds Wu Qu and Po Jun. Your coworker's Friends Palace is an Empty Palace borrowing Tian Ji and Tian Liang, with tough stars present, read as a reminder to put important things in writing rather than relying on an unspoken understanding. Their Career Palace holds Lian Zhen and Po Jun.
  • Life Palaces: your coworker lands in your Career Palace, and you land in their Wealth Palace.
  • From your coworker to you: Tai Yang Hua Lu lands in your Friends Palace, Wu Qu Hua Quan in your Career Palace, Tai Yin Hua Ke in your Health Palace, and Tian Tong Hua Ji in your Property Palace.
  • From you to your coworker: Po Jun Hua Lu lands in their Career Palace, Ju Men Hua Quan in their Children Palace, and Tan Lang Hua Ji in their Wealth Palace.
  • The tone between you: you're both Leaders, and the preview says: "You are both used to making the call. Settle who is in charge of what, or you may end up competing."

How to read it: your coworker lands in your Career Palace and sends Wu Qu Hua Quan there too, so at work you'll clearly feel this person pushing the pace, and sometimes feel directed. Your Po Jun Hua Lu lands in their Career Palace, so the new approaches you bring help their work. On the worry side, your Tan Lang Hua Ji lands in their Wealth Palace, so what they're most likely to worry about with you is money, which at work might mean budgets and how resources get split. Their Tian Tong Hua Ji lands in your Property Palace, so what you're most likely to worry about with them is home, for example whether overtime eats into family time. At the start of a project, settle who owns which area, who reports out, and who signs off on budget. Two people who like to make the call each get their own patch and stop fighting over one.

Where coworkers usually get stuck

One moves fast, one thinks it through

One person starts the moment the idea lands; the other wants to think through every risk first. The fast one finds the other slow, and the careful one finds the other rash. Agree at kickoff whether this project needs speed or care, then set one checkpoint: the fast one pauses there, and the careful one lets go there.

Who goes first, who closes

Xingge groups the fourteen main stars into four types. They describe working tendencies and say nothing about ability. Pioneers (Qi Sha, Po Jun, Tan Lang) get things moving and suit opening new ground. Leaders (Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Wu Qu, Tian Xiang, Lian Zhen) are used to carrying responsibility and setting direction. Thinkers (Tian Ji, Tai Yin, Tian Tong, Tian Liang) think things through and fill gaps. Communicators (Ju Men, Tai Yang) suit talking to the outside world. The preview gives each pairing of types one line. For a Pioneer and a Thinker: "The thinker spots the risks the pioneer misses, as long as the talking happens before the doing." This grouping is Xingge's own and doesn't come from the classics. Going by these tendencies, let the one who charges ahead open, and hand the checking and wrap-up to the more detailed one.

Credit and dividing the work

Who presents and whose name goes on it is where resentment builds. When their Hua Ji lands in your Career Palace, work is where you most easily worry on their account, and who gets credit tends to stay on your mind. A compatibility reading can't show whether anyone means to take credit, only who cares more about it. Write the split of work somewhere everyone can see, and when you present, say which part was whose. If Lu Cun sits in your Friends Palace, speak up for your own part. If tough stars sit in your Friends Palace, follow up anything agreed out loud with a short written message, and a lot of "I thought you were doing that" disappears.

FAQ

Which palaces matter in a coworker compatibility reading?

Both people read their own Friends Palace and Career Palace. One covers how you deal with peers, the other how you work. Then add where each Life Palace lands and how the birth-year Hua Lu and Hua Ji fly.

Why read the Friends Palace for coworkers and not the Siblings Palace?

The Siblings Palace mostly covers brothers, sisters and relatives your own age. The Friends Palace covers peers you meet outside the family: classmates, coworkers and friends. Some teachers also read workplace colleagues from the Property or Siblings Palace, which you can treat as a supplement.

What does it mean if my coworker's Life Palace lands in my Career Palace?

This coworker is closely tied to your work, and how they do things directly affects your progress. The thing to watch is taking a disagreement about the work as a judgment of you.

I keep feeling a coworker takes credit for my work. Can the charts show that?

They can't show anyone's intentions, but they can show what you care about. If their Hua Ji lands in your Career Palace, work is where you most easily worry on their account, and whether your part gets seen will weigh on you more. Writing down who did what helps more than guessing at motives.

Can the charts show who on a team should go first and who should close?

They can show tendencies, using Xingge's star types. Pioneers tend to suit starting things, Thinkers and steadier Leaders suit checking and wrapping up, and Communicators suit talking to the outside world. Treat it as a guide for dividing work, and leave ability out of it.

My coworker has become a close friend. Should I switch the form to Friend?

It depends on what the relationship mostly is now. Colleague reads the Friends and Career Palaces; Friend reads only the Friends Palace. Where Life Palaces land and how Hua Lu and Hua Ji fly come out the same either way. If the friendship now outweighs the work, switch to Friend and see best friend compatibility.
