Your manager says "maybe think about this one a bit more," and you spend the morning trying to work out whether that was a rejection or encouragement. Managers have the mirror problem. The person they handed the task to worked hard on it, and still landed slightly off target. In Zi Wei Dou Shu, a boss–employee reading looks at the palaces in each chart that cover the people above you and the people under you, then at where each person's Life Palace and birth-year transformations land in the other's chart.
The short version:
- Formula: the employee reads their own Parents Palace and Career Palace; the boss reads their own Friends Palace.
- The single biggest signal: if your boss's Life Palace lands in your Parents Palace, you naturally treat them as an elder, and their opinion weighs more than most.
- Flying transformations: where the boss's Hua Lu lands in your chart is the help they give without trying; where their Hua Ji lands is what you'll worry about most in this working relationship.
- Weight: where each Life Palace lands and how the transformations fly lead the reading. The stars in the palaces set the tone, and Ba Zi is a side note.
Which palaces, and why
| Who | Palace | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Employee | Parents | How you treat those above you |
| Employee | Career | How you work |
| Boss | Friends | How they lead a team |
The Parents Palace starts with your parents and extends to everyone above you: teachers, elders, managers. One teacher's view is that your direct manager and your mentors all belong to this palace, and when it is strong, the people above you at work tend to be a real help. The Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu ("The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu") calls Tian Liang the star that "presides over parents" and says it transforms into shelter. Shelter here is someone above you looking out for you, which is part of why this palace gets read for the boss.
The Career Palace is your work itself: how you get things done and where you stand. It shows what this relationship does to your actual work.
In the Quan Shu, the Friends Palace is named for household servants. The classics used it for staff and subordinates, which today means employees and your team. Volume Two goes star by star through whether the people under you are "capable" or "lacking strength," for example "with Tian Fu, capable help: one call brings a hundred answers." One teacher put it more bluntly: this is the employees palace. Building a business in their twenties, they kept losing good hires one after another, and only understood why after learning to look at this palace.
Reading the two charts together
Step one: where each Life Palace lands. Place the other person's Life Palace branch on your chart and see which palace it falls in. A boss landing in your Parents Palace is the classic case: they feel like a teacher or elder. In your Siblings Palace, they feel more like a teammate at your shoulder. In your Career Palace, this person is tightly bound to your work.
Step two: the birth-year transformations. See where the other person's Hua Lu and Hua Ji land in your chart. Hua Lu is what they bring you. Hua Ji is what you care about most, and where things most easily stick. Hua Quan (a push) and Hua Ke (someone speaking well of you) are worth a glance too.
Here is one pair, run through our engine. Take an employee with Tian Ji in the Life Palace and a boss whose Life Palace is an Empty Palace borrowing Tai Yang:
- The relationship palaces: the employee's Parents Palace holds Zi Wei and Tan Lang, and their Career Palace holds Tian Liang. The boss's Friends Palace holds Wu Qu and Tian Xiang.
- Life Palaces: the boss lands in the employee's Parents Palace, and the employee lands in the boss's Siblings Palace. The boss sees a teammate; the employee sees an elder. They don't feel the same distance.
- From the boss to the employee: Tian Ji Hua Lu and Tai Yin Hua Ji both land in the employee's Life Palace, Tian Liang Hua Quan in their Career Palace, and Zi Wei Hua Ke in their Parents Palace.
- From the employee to the boss: Tai Yang Hua Lu lands in the boss's Travel Palace, Wu Qu Hua Quan in their Friends Palace, and Tian Tong Hua Ji in their Career Palace.
How to read it: both the help and the worry from this boss land in the employee's Life Palace, so the employee takes this person personally. Praise lifts them a lot, and a cool remark stays with them a long time. Tian Liang Hua Quan in the Career Palace means the boss pushes and sets rules at work. In the other direction, the employee's Tian Tong Hua Ji lands in the boss's Career Palace, so what the boss worries about with this report is progress on the work. If the boss spells out the standard and the employee reports progress without being asked, most of the guessing goes away. The last section of the result, "Working with your boss", gives tips based on the boss's Life Palace stars. For this pair, the first is to say thank you and notice what they do.
Where boss and employee usually get stuck
Being managed too closely
When the boss's Hua Quan lands in your Parents or Career Palace, it can feel like everything gets checked. One teacher reads Hua Quan in the Parents Palace as elders and managers keeping a close hand on you: hard going, but it usually pushes your abilities up. Ask which things need sign-off first and which can be reported after. Rules with edges are easier to live with than general oversight. On the boss's side, hand over the result and the deadline and leave the method to them. It saves you from watching every step.
Credit and being seen
When the boss's Hua Lu lands in your Life or Career Palace, you tend to feel the help they give. When their Hua Ji lands there, you may feel you do a lot that goes unnoticed. A short, regular summary of what you finished works better than waiting to be noticed. If you're the manager giving feedback, name one specific thing done well before the thing to change.
Different working rhythms
One person thinks it through before moving; the other wants to start the moment the idea lands. When your Life Palace stars are very different, agree at the start of a project whether this one needs speed or care. Each side bends a little.
A boss reading their own Friends Palace
One teacher's view is that lucky stars here mean people under you tend to pull their weight. Tian Kui in the Friends Palace, for example, is read as reports who genuinely help. Tougher stars here are a reminder to keep key decisions in your own hands, divide the work clearly, and reward fairly.
If you work side by side as peers, see coworker compatibility. If you put money into a business together, see business partner compatibility. To see which stars sit in your own Parents and Friends Palaces, cast your chart first.
FAQ
Which palaces matter in a boss and employee compatibility reading?
The employee reads their own Parents Palace and Career Palace, and the boss reads their own Friends Palace. The Parents Palace covers the people above you, the Career Palace covers your work, and the Friends Palace covers the people under you and your team. Then add where each Life Palace lands and how the birth-year transformations fly.
What does it mean if my boss's Life Palace lands in my Parents Palace?
You naturally place them in the role of an elder or teacher, so their opinion carries extra weight with you. You can learn a lot from them. The thing to watch is turning one comment into a verdict on everything you do.
What if I don't get along with my boss?
Start with your boss's Life Palace star and find the way of talking that lands with them. A Tian Ji boss wants facts and reasons; with a Qi Sha boss, raise disagreements in private. A compatibility reading shows tendencies, and how well you work together still comes down to how you talk.
If my boss's Hua Ji lands in my chart, will they make things hard for me?
Hua Ji means concern and attachment. It says nothing about anyone's intentions. The palace it lands in is the part of this relationship you'll find hardest to let go of: the Career Palace means the work, the Life Palace means how you feel. Once you know which, you can talk that part through first.
Does my report's Friends Palace matter?
Their Friends Palace is about how they lead their own people and keep friendships, which is further from your working relationship. When you read a report, the main palaces are your own Friends Palace plus their Parents and Career Palaces.
Can a compatibility reading tell me about a promotion or a raise?
No. It shows how the two of you tend to interact: who pushes whom, and what each of you cares about. Promotions and pay depend on far more than the two charts. To see how you work, start with your own Career Palace.
Other relationships
This is the general reading. On your own chart it shifts with the stars' brightness, the San Fang Si Zheng and the year you are in.
