How to Check Your 2027 Year on Your Own Zi Wei Chart
Most "2027 horoscopes" are written by zodiac animal or sun sign, so each one is aimed at a twelfth of the population. Zi Wei Dou Shu doesn't count the year that way. In 2027, a Ding Wei year, everyone's yearly Life Palace sits in the Wei box of their chart. But which of your palaces the Wei box is, and which stars live there, depends on your year, month, day and hour of birth, and the colleague at the next desk may have something completely different. Rather than reading someone else's forecast, draw your own chart and spend ten minutes checking it yourself.
Before you start: when 2027 begins
Zi Wei Dou Shu changes year by the lunar calendar. The 2027 Lunar New Year falls on February 6, and the Ding Wei year starts that day. From January 1 to February 5, 2027, it still counts as the 2026 Bing Wu year. If you're looking at something at the end of January or start of February, check which year it falls in first.
Some software and teachers switch years at Li Chun, the start of spring, which also falls in early February, a few days away. Xingge follows the *Quan Shu* and most schools and uses the Lunar New Year.
The yearly markers on the chart page follow today's date. The small "Yr" badge marks the yearly Life Palace for the year we're in now, and so does the line above the chart that starts "This year (Bing Wu) centres on…". Until February 6, 2027, they show the 2026 Bing Wu year: the badge sits on the Wu box, and the yearly transformation tags next to the star names are the Bing year's. After February 6 they switch to Ding Wei on their own. To look at 2027 before then, follow the three steps below by hand.
Step one: find the Wei box
Your chart has twelve boxes. The bottom line of each shows that box's stem and branch on the left and its Decade Luck ages on the right. Find the box whose second word is Wei; it might read Ji Wei, Xin Wei, Gui Wei or another pair. The first word is the box's own stem, which differs from chart to chart, so don't look for Ding.
The palace name in that box is where 2027's yearly Life Palace lands on your chart. If you know which branch your Life Palace is in, you can work it out directly:
- Life Palace in Wei: Wei is the Life Palace, and the year comes home to it
- Life Palace in Shen: Wei is the Siblings Palace
- Life Palace in You: Wei is the Spouse Palace
- Life Palace in Xu: Wei is the Children Palace
- Life Palace in Hai: Wei is the Wealth Palace
- Life Palace in Zi: Wei is the Health Palace
- Life Palace in Chou: Wei is the Travel Palace
- Life Palace in Yin: Wei is the Friends Palace
- Life Palace in Mao: Wei is the Career Palace
- Life Palace in Chen: Wei is the Property Palace
- Life Palace in Si: Wei is the Fortune Palace
- Life Palace in Wu: Wei is the Parents Palace
Whatever that palace covers is the year's theme. If Wei is your Career Palace, work is where you'll feel it most; if it's your Spouse Palace, love and long-term partnerships take centre stage; if it's your Property Palace, it's often a year of moving, sorting out your home or family matters.
If your Life Palace is in Wei, 2027 is the year the cycle comes home to your Life Palace. The *Quan Shu*, writing about the yearly cycle, says roughly: when the year arrives at the Life Palace, its good and bad are felt most strongly. That happens once every twelve years. One side note: being born in a Goat year and having your Life Palace in Wei are two different things. Your zodiac animal comes from your birth year; your Life Palace comes from your birth month and hour.
Step two: read the Wei box and its San Fang Si Zheng
Start with who lives in the Wei box. Main stars are in larger type, minor stars smaller. The main stars set the year's tone: Tian Ji in Wei brings lots of ideas and changes in that area; Tai Yin leans toward slow building and feeling secure.
If the Wei box has no main star, it's an Empty Palace, and the box shows "Borrows" with the opposite palace's main stars in light text. Read an empty yearly palace by borrowing from across the chart, the same way as an Empty Life Palace.
Then tap the Wei box. The site frames its San Fang Si Zheng: the Chou box opposite, plus the Mao and Hai boxes in its trines. The year is read like the natal chart, four boxes together. Next to the chart (on phones, in the panel that slides up) you'll see that palace's natal reading. That's the base layer: first understand how you are in that area to begin with, then remember that in 2027 it's that palace's turn in the spotlight.
Step three: find the Ding year transformations
Each year's stem transforms four stars. For a Ding year:
- Tai Yin takes Hua Lu
- Tian Tong takes Hua Quan
- Tian Ji takes Hua Ke
- Ju Men takes Hua Ji
Find these four stars on your chart and note which palace each sits in. Until February 6, the small L, Q, K and J tags already next to some star names are either your birth-year transformations, the Bing Wu year's or this month's (dashed frames); the "Chart symbols" button explains which is which. When checking 2027, ignore those tags and look for the star names themselves. Read each one as three things together: star, transformation, palace.
- Hua Lu palace: things flow, connections come easily, a good place to start.
- Hua Quan palace: you want to take charge, and need to carry it.
- Hua Ke palace: you're more likely to be seen and assessed.
- Hua Ji palace: where you care most and put in the most thought. Leave a little extra room there this year.
For example, Tai Yin with Hua Lu in your Property Palace can read as a smoother year for your home and household resources; Ju Men with Hua Ji in your Friends Palace means words between friends and colleagues are easily misread, and saying important things face to face helps a lot. What each of the four means is covered in full in 2027 Four Transformations.
Two facts from the placement rules are worth checking against: Tian Ji and Tian Tong always sit in each other's trines, so Hua Ke and Hua Quan always reach each other; Tai Yin and Ju Men never share a San Fang Si Zheng, so Hua Lu and Hua Ji never meet directly.
After February 6, 2027, the yearly tags next to these four stars switch to the Ding year's, so you won't need to look them up.
Bonus: layer the decade on top
Another badge on the chart reads "Now". It marks the Decade Luck you're in, the main thread of these ten years; a line above the chart also says which palace this decade sits in and for which ages.
The reading order is natal chart, then decade, then year. If the Wei box is also your decade's Life Palace, the two layers point at the same place and the year's theme is especially clear. Switch on "Detailed" and choose the "Annual" layer in the centre of the chart: each box gets a small gold label for its name in the yearly layer, such as "Y. Life" or "Y. Wealth", along with the yearly transformations. This layer also follows today's date, so before February 6 you'll see 2026; after the new year it shows 2027.
Three common mistakes when checking yourself
- Hua Ji in a palace doesn't mean that area will go wrong. Hua Ji is about care and attention. Practitioners read it as an area that asks for patience, not a forecast.
- Reading the year without the natal chart. Two people can both have the Career Palace as their yearly palace, and feel the year very differently depending on how strong their natal Career Palace is. Understand the natal chart first, and the year reads more accurately.
- Treating the year as a script. The yearly cycle describes where the focus is, not what will happen. The choices are still yours.
FAQ
Which palace is my 2027 yearly Life Palace?
2027 is a Ding Wei year, so everyone's yearly Life Palace is the Wei box. Which of your natal palaces that is depends on your Life Palace's branch: with your Life Palace in Mao, Wei is your Career Palace; in You, it's your Spouse Palace.
When does the 2027 year start?
Zi Wei Dou Shu changes year by the lunar calendar, so 2027 starts at the Lunar New Year on February 6, 2027. January 1 to February 5, 2027 still belongs to the 2026 Bing Wu year.
Can I check my year if I don't know my birth hour?
You can, but the answer moves with the hour. Your birth hour sets which box your Life Palace is in; move it and the palace name for Wei changes too, and main stars may sit in different places. When you draw your chart, you can enter clock time and the site converts it to a double-hour, adjusting for daylight saving time where it applied.
The Wei box is empty. How do I read the year?
If the Wei box has no main star, borrow the main stars from the Chou box opposite; the chart shows the borrowed names in light text. Borrowed stars read a little fainter, so also look at the minor stars in the Wei box and at its San Fang Si Zheng.
