Five elements

The Water element

Water belongs to winter and the north, and its colours are black and deep blue; its image is rivers, rain and the sea. In folk tradition, Water stands for wisdom, flow and adaptability, finding a way forward by following the shape of the land.

Plenty of Water

When Water is strong in a Ba Zi chart, you are often described as clever, quick and full of ideas, adapting well to change. The sticking point is thoughts that move so fast they are hard to settle, so setting one or two clear goals gives you more direction.

Little or no Water

When Water is weak, you may be described as practical and direct, rarely taking the long way round, though shifting your mood may take a little longer. Missing an element, or having little of it, is very common and is not a defect; giving yourself a bit more room to unwind and reflect is enough.

Bringing in more Water

Folk advice suggests small things in black or deep blue, time spent facing or travelling north, and walks by the sea, a river or a lake. Reading, journaling, swimming, travel, or setting aside quiet time alone are all seen as ways to bring in Water.
