How the elements are counted
Stems: Jia and Yi are Wood, Bing and Ding Fire, Wu and Ji Earth, Geng and Xin Metal, Ren and Gui Water. Branches use their main element: Yin and Mao Wood, Si and Wu Fire, Shen and You Metal, Hai and Zi Water, Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei Earth. This is the common eight-character count; finer methods also weigh hidden stems and the season.
FAQ
How is Ba Zi different from Zi Wei Dou Shu?
Both use the year, month, day and hour of birth. Ba Zi reads the five-element interplay of the four pillars around the Day Master; Zi Wei Dou Shu places stars in twelve palaces and reads each palace. Ba Zi changes year at Li Chun, Zi Wei Dou Shu at Lunar New Year.
Can I do this without my birth hour?
The year, month and day pillars do not depend on it; only the hour pillar does. The birth hour finder can narrow it down.
