Shen-You void covers the ten Day pillars of the Jia Xu decade: Jia Xu, Yi Hai, Bing Zi, Ding Chou, Wu Yin, Ji Mao, Geng Chen, Xin Si, Ren Wu and Gui Wei. The ten stems run out at Gui Wei, so Shen and You are left without a stem; those two are the void branches.
Pillars that fall void in your chart
If the Year pillar is void, family background offers fewer ready-made resources, and you usually start out on your own. In the Month pillar, support from your working environment and colleagues may be less steady, and track changes are common; you tend to make your own path. In the Hour pillar, children, later life and long-term goals take more deliberate care, with results that come slowly but solidly. Shen and You are both Metal, the element of harvest, decision and action, so this group is often read as capable of a great deal but needing to gather its own rewards. How do I know if I have Shen-You void?
Look at your Day pillar. If it is Jia Xu, Yi Hai, Bing Zi, Ding Chou, Wu Yin, Ji Mao, Geng Chen, Xin Si, Ren Wu or Gui Wei, you have Shen-You void. The Day pillar comes from your date of birth; if you were born after 11 p.m., it counts as the next day.
Can I start a business or change jobs in 2028 or 2029?
You can, but approach it differently. Void years suit firming up foundations: building experience where you are, running small trials, getting your plan and funds ready. A full-scale launch sits more comfortably after Li Chun in 2030.
Are void branches a bad thing?
No. Everyone has two void branches; it is simply how the sixty-pair cycle is laid out. The classics say a favorable element in the void loses some strength, while an unfavorable one loses its sting, so the void sometimes takes pressure off you. Void years are simply a phase for settling and consolidating.
