Yin–Mao void branches (Kong Wang) in Ba Zi
Your Day pillar sits in the Jia Chen decade, so Yin and Mao are your void branches (Kong Wang): spring's Wood sprouts on its own, often a little later than others.

Who has this void
Yin-Mao void covers the ten Day pillars of the Jia Chen decade: Jia Chen, Yi Si, Bing Wu, Ding Wei, Wu Shen, Ji You, Geng Xu, Xin Hai, Ren Zi and Gui Chou. The ten stems run out at Gui Chou, so Yin and Mao are left without a stem; those two are the void branches.
Pillars that fall void in your chart
If the Year pillar is void, you started out with fewer family resources and are used to finding your own way. In the Month pillar, help from parents, siblings or the workplace may not show up when you need it, and your career is often something you grow yourself. In the Hour pillar, children, later life and long-range plans need more time to sprout; there is no need to rush for results. Yin and Mao are both Wood, the element of spring, beginnings and growth, so this group is often read as slow to start but steady in growth. If Wood is favorable for you, its help is muted; if unfavorable, its pressure eases. When Shen clashes Yin, You clashes Mao, or Hai or Xu combines with them in your chart, the void is filled.
Getting through void years
Your void years are 2034 (Jia Yin) and 2035 (Yi Mao); the last pair was 2022 and 2023. They come round every 12 years, two years at a time, and a BaZi year begins at Li Chun, around February 4. Each year, the Yin and Mao months, roughly early February to early April, fall right at the start of the year and are a smaller void. Use them to plan, learn and clear out unfinished business; write up the year's big plans and formally launch them after Qing Ming.
A tip
With Yin-Mao void, do not compare starting lines. Compare what you have grown into ten years on.
FAQ
What does Yin-Mao void mean?
It means your Day pillar is in the Jia Chen decade, and Yin and Mao, the two branches left without a stem, are your void branches. Wherever Yin or Mao appears in your chart, what that pillar stands for asks more of your own effort; Yin and Mao years, and the Yin and Mao months of each early spring, are times for planning and groundwork.
What should I watch in 2034 and 2035?
These years suit consolidation more than expansion: look after the foundations of work, money and home, and use the time to study or adjust course. Test big commitments or new ventures on a small scale, and scale them up after Li Chun in 2036.
Why do some books count void branches from the Year pillar?
Both methods appear in the classics. Counting from the Year pillar is older; once BaZi centered on the Day Master, most practitioners switched to the Day pillar. Xingge follows mainstream practice and uses the Day pillar, so if you see different void branches elsewhere, the starting pillar is usually why.
