Zi–Chou void branches (Kong Wang) in Ba Zi

Your Day pillar sits in the Jia Yin decade, so Zi and Chou are your void branches (Kong Wang): winter's Water and Earth are stored by your own hand.

Who has this void

Zi-Chou void covers the ten Day pillars of the Jia Yin decade: Jia Yin, Yi Mao, Bing Chen, Ding Si, Wu Wu, Ji Wei, Geng Shen, Xin You, Ren Xu and Gui Hai. This is the last decade of the sixty-pair cycle; the ten stems run out at Gui Hai, so Zi and Chou are left without a stem, and those two are the void branches.

Pillars that fall void in your chart

If the Year pillar is void, family and early surroundings offered less of a safety net, and you often learned early to plan for yourself. In the Month pillar, support from parents, siblings or the workplace may be unsteady, and the skills you build yourself are what you can count on. In the Hour pillar, children, later life and long-range plans are best prepared early and saved for steadily, rather than done in one go. Zi is Water and Chou is Earth, deep winter, the season of storing and gathering, so this group is often read as very self-reliant, building its reserves by hand. If these elements are favorable for you, their help is muted; if unfavorable, their pressure eases. When Wu clashes Zi or Wei clashes Chou in your chart, the void is filled. Zi and Chou combine with each other, but since both are void, that combination does not fill it.

Getting through void years

Your void years are 2032 (Ren Zi) and 2033 (Gui Chou); the last pair was 2020 and 2021. They come round every 12 years, two years at a time, and a BaZi year begins at Li Chun, around February 4. Each year, the Zi and Chou months, roughly early December to early February, span the turn of the year and are a smaller void. Use them to take stock, build reserves, study and wrap up the year; write up new plans and launch them after Li Chun.

A tip

With Zi-Chou void, set aside a little time, a little money and a little skill every year, and no winter feels too long.

FAQ

What does Zi-Chou void mean?

It means your Day pillar is in the Jia Yin decade, the last decade of the sixty-pair cycle, and Zi and Chou, the two branches left without a stem, are your void branches. Wherever Zi or Chou appears in your chart, what that pillar stands for asks more of your own effort; Zi and Chou years, and the turn of each year, are times to take stock and build reserves.

How should I plan 2032 and 2033?

Treat them as a time to build reserves: save, study, sort out your network and current projects, and get the next step ready. Large-scale new launches sit more comfortably after Li Chun in 2034.

Can I marry or move during a void year?

Yes. A void year is not a year when things are forbidden. The better approach is to prepare more thoroughly, take things a little more slowly and double-check important agreements. If a date is already set, simply go ahead as planned.
