Xu–Hai void branches (Kong Wang) in Ba Zi

Your Day pillar sits in the Jia Zi decade, so Xu and Hai are your void branches (Kong Wang): what they stand for is yours to fill by hand.

Who has this void

Xu-Hai void covers the ten Day pillars of the Jia Zi decade: Jia Zi, Yi Chou, Bing Yin, Ding Mao, Wu Chen, Ji Si, Geng Wu, Xin Wei, Ren Shen and Gui You. The ten stems run out at Gui You, leaving Xu and Hai without a stem; those two are the void branches.

Pillars that fall void in your chart

If Xu or Hai sits in your Year pillar, ties to family background and early surroundings feel lighter, and you often stand on your own early. In the Month pillar, help from parents, siblings or where you come from may not arrive where you expect, so you tend to build your career yourself. In the Hour pillar, the void touches children, later life and long-range plans: plenty of ideas that need deliberate, step-by-step follow-through. Xu is Earth and Hai is Water; the classics call Xu and Hai the Gate of Heaven, and this group is often read as idealistic and inward. If these elements are favorable for you, their help is muted; if they are unfavorable, their pressure is lighter too. When Chen clashes Xu, Si clashes Hai, or Mao or Yin combines with them in your chart, the void is filled and its effect shrinks.

Getting through void years

Your void years are 2030 (Geng Xu) and 2031 (Xin Hai); the last pair was 2018 and 2019. They come round every 12 years, two years at a time, and a BaZi year begins at Li Chun, around February 4. Each year, the Xu and Hai months, roughly early October to early December, are a smaller void. Use these stretches to tidy up, study and steady what you already have. Big new launches can be researched now and settled a little later; anything already under way can simply carry on.

A tip

With Xu-Hai void, put your ideals onto a concrete plan first, so they do not stay as thoughts.

FAQ

What does Xu-Hai void mean?

It means your Day pillar falls in the Jia Zi decade, and the two branches that decade leaves without a stem, Xu and Hai, are your void branches. Wherever Xu or Hai appears in your chart, what that pillar stands for asks more of your own effort; Xu and Hai years are times to consolidate and lay groundwork.

What should I watch in 2030 and 2031?

These are your void years: good for steadying existing work, relationships and finances, and for study and building skills. Big decisions like starting a business or a large commitment can be prepared now and finalized after Li Chun in 2032, which gives you more room.

Are void branches the same as Tenchusatsu?

They are calculated the same way: from the ten-day group your Day pillar belongs to, find the two branches left without a stem. Void branches (Kong Wang) is the classical BaZi term, while Tenchusatsu is the name used in Japanese astrology schools; the details of interpretation differ a little between traditions.
