Suzi Gablik described Magritte's work as "a systematic attempt to disrupt any dogmatic view of the physical world": rocks, commonly understood to be heavy, he often painted floating cloud-like in the sky, and he would also paint people and their surroundings as stone. On 15 December 1929 (nominal age 32), in the last issue of La Révolution surréaliste, Magritte published his essay Les mots et les images, where words play with images in step with his work The Treachery of Images. The Career Palace stands for career and work, and Hua Quan is taking the lead and having a voice, which lines up with his putting forward his own ideas in this journal.

In the early stages of his career, the British surrealist patron Edward James let Magritte stay rent-free in his London home, where he studied architecture and painted. In 1936 he had his first solo exhibition in the United States, at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York, followed in 1938 by an exhibition at the London Gallery.
