Chart settings (advanced)

Schools differ on a few rules. Keep the defaults if unsure; change them if your chart doesn't match one from another site.

Jiang Xing (General Star) is the first of the Twelve General Gods (Jiang Qian), and the whole set is counted from it. The palace holding Jiang Xing is where you make more of the calls for a while: people wait for your decision, and you are willing to step up. It carries very little weight, like a small label on that palace saying "you decide here." To find which palace Jiang Xing is in this year, draw your chart.

How Jiang Xing is placed

Find which the year branch belongs to. Jiang Xing sits on the middle branch of that trine:

  • Yin, Wu and Xu years: Wu
  • Shen, Zi and Chen years: Zi
  • Si, You and Chou years: You
  • Hai, Mao and Wei years: Mao

So Jiang Xing only lands in Zi, Wu, Mao or You. The natal chart uses your birth-year branch; the annual set uses that year's branch. In 2026, a Bing Wu year, it is in Wu; in 2027, a Ding Wei year (from February 6, 2027), it is in Mao. In Zi, Wu, Mao and You years, Jiang Xing sits right on the year's own branch, sharing a palace with Sui Jian.

What Jiang Xing means

Xingge reads it like this: you make the calls more often; to bring people along, first earn their trust.

The second half is the point. Jiang Xing gives you the position, not the authority. When others hand the decision to you, they follow if you are fair and clear. If you only push things through by force of presence, they move for a while, and then no one picks them up.

Jiang Xing in key palaces

This uses the annual set, that is, "which of your natal palaces Jiang Xing falls in this year":

  • Life Palace: a lot waits on your yes this year. Make the direction clear first, then divide up the work.
  • Career Palace: a chance to lead a project or a small team at work. Setting the rules up front works better than rallying people after the fact.
  • Wealth Palace: you make most of the money decisions yourself. Handle big spending by your own rules, and don't let others rush you.
  • Spouse Palace: you take the lead more often in the relationship. Ask what your partner thinks before deciding, and things stay steadier.
  • Health Palace: you set your own pace of life. When the schedule gets too full, remember to leave yourself some gaps.

Natal and annual, read separately

The natal Jiang Xing sits in the same palace for life, printed in the corner of the cell. The annual Jiang Xing moves back three palaces each year and comes full circle in four. Xingge's palace readings only use the annual set, and when you switch the detailed chart to an Annual Luck, the General Gods in each palace change to the annual version. The palace directly opposite Jiang Xing always holds Zai Sha: while you make the calls on one side, check the details on the other.

Jiang Xing is not Qi Sha, and not Jiang Jun

When "general star" appears in the (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu), it never refers to this god. The section on Qi Sha's nature in volume two opens with:

Qi Sha is fire and metal, the general star of the Southern Dipper.

This uses "general star" to describe Qi Sha's charge-ahead character. In the same volume, the section on placing the annual spirit stars, Dou Jun and the void also has a line saying the verse for placing Dou Jun "is the monthly general star," which is about . The Twelve General Gods as a set are not in the Quan Shu's placement verses; they were added to chart-making later. The name Jiang Xing comes from the spirit stars of Bazi (Four Pillars). The San Ming Tong Hui (a Ming-dynasty classic of Bazi), in its chapter on Jiang Xing and Hua Gai, says "the middle position of the trine is called Jiang Xing," the same method used here.

Jiang Jun of the Twelve Erudite Gods (Bo Shi) is also easy to mix up. Jiang Jun is counted from Lu Cun, belongs to the natal chart, and is about acting decisively. Jiang Xing is counted from the year branch's trine, is mainly read by year, and is about the position of making the calls.

FAQ

What does Jiang Xing mean?

Jiang Xing is the first of the Twelve General Gods. It stands for making the calls and being able to lead. In the palace it holds, people often wait for your decision for a while; be fair, and they will trust you.

How is Jiang Xing placed?

By the year branch's trine: in Wu for Yin, Wu and Xu years; in Zi for Shen, Zi and Chen years; in You for Si, You and Chou years; in Mao for Hai, Mao and Wei years. So Jiang Xing only lands in Zi, Wu, Mao or You.

Is Jiang Xing the same as Qi Sha, "the general star of the Southern Dipper"?

No. When the Quan Shu calls Qi Sha "the general star of the Southern Dipper," it is describing Qi Sha's character. The Jiang Xing of the Twelve General Gods is a separate minor god that the Quan Shu does not include.

Is it good to have Jiang Xing in the Life Palace this year?

It's a signal that you are being asked to step up. This year a lot lands in your hands. Making the direction clear and dividing the work well is easier than charging ahead alone.
