Zai Sha (Mishap Sha) is the seventh of the Twelve General Gods (Jiang Qian), directly opposite Jiang Xing. Its name is the heaviest in the set, yet it is read in a very everyday way: in the palace holding Zai Sha, you tend to hit small hassles you didn't see coming, like a missing page in a document, a date off by one day, or a parcel sent to the wrong address. Check once more beforehand and you avoid a lot of trouble. To see which palace it's in for you, draw your chart.
How Zai Sha is placed
Count six palaces on from Jiang Xing, which puts it in the palace opposite Jiang Xing:
- Yin, Wu and Xu years: Zi
- Shen, Zi and Chen years: Wu
- Si, You and Chou years: Mao
- Hai, Mao and Wei years: You
So Zai Sha only lands in Zi, Wu, Mao or You. In 2026, a Bing Wu year, it is in Zi; in 2027, a Ding Wei year (from February 6, 2027), it is in You.
What Zai Sha means
Xingge reads it like this: you tend to run into small hassles you didn't expect; check once more beforehand and you avoid a lot of trouble.
The key words are "small" and "beforehand." Zai Sha isn't about big events. It's about the trouble that builds up from overlooked details. It faces Jiang Xing across the chart: in the Jiang Xing palace you make the calls, and the Zai Sha palace reminds you to go back and check. Read together, the two say: decide quickly, check carefully.
Zai Sha in key palaces
Using the annual set:
- Life Palace: more small hiccups this year. Look twice at important dates and documents, and run through what you're carrying before you head out.
- Wealth Palace: details like bills, transfers and receipts are easy to get wrong. Check the amount and account number before you pay.
- Career Palace: slip-ups at work are more easily magnified. Have someone look over your work before you hand it in.
- Travel Palace: trips tend to have small surprises. Confirm transport and accommodation early.
- Spouse Palace: misunderstandings often start from something not said clearly. Confirm plans you've agreed on once more, face to face.
Natal and annual, read separately
The natal Zai Sha sits in the same palace for life; the annual set is placed again each year by the year's branch. Xingge's palace readings only use the annual set, in the "this year" part of the reading, and only as a one-line reminder, never as a conclusion. If Zai Sha falls in one of your palaces, there's no need to worry; just double-check that palace's affairs.
The Twelve General Gods as a set are not in the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu), and there is no Quan Shu text on Zai Sha. Bazi (Four Pillars) also has a Zai Sha: the San Ming Tong Hui, a Ming-dynasty classic of Bazi, in its chapter on it says it "clashes with and breaks Jiang Xing," so it always sits opposite Jiang Xing, just as here. The old texts make it sound grave; Xingge reads it as a reminder about details. The heavy-named gods in the Twelve Year Gods (Sui Qian), such as Bai Hu, are read the same way: the name stays, and the line becomes a reminder.
