Wang Shen (Lost Spirit) is the last of the Twelve General Gods (Jiang Qian); after it, the next palace comes back round to Jiang Xing. "Wang" here means losing, slipping away. In the palace holding Wang Shen, energy and belongings tend to slip away quietly: time goes on things that don't matter, and things you put down somewhere can't be found. Hold on to what matters and don't spread yourself too thin, and you'll keep hold of it. To see which palace it falls in for you, draw your chart.

How Wang Shen is placed

Count eleven palaces on from Jiang Xing, which puts it one palace before Jiang Xing:

  • Yin, Wu and Xu years: Si
  • Shen, Zi and Chen years: Hai
  • Si, You and Chou years: Shen
  • Hai, Mao and Wei years: Yin

So Wang Shen only lands in Yin, Shen, Si or Hai. In 2026, a Bing Wu year, it is in Si; in 2027, a Ding Wei year (from February 6, 2027), it is in Yin.

What Wang Shen means

Xingge reads it like this: energy and belongings tend to slip away quietly; hold on to what matters and don't spread yourself too thin.

The key word is "quietly." Wang Shen isn't about one big loss. It's about what leaks away without your noticing: saying yes to too much and finishing each thing only halfway, signing up for too many subscriptions and forgetting to cancel, picking up your phone and losing an hour. The palace directly opposite Wang Shen always holds Jie Sha. Jie Sha is being suddenly thrown off; Wang Shen is being slowly scattered. Read the two together to know where to keep a backup this year and where to rein yourself in.

Wang Shen in key palaces

Using the annual set:

  • Wealth Palace: small sums tend to slip away unnoticed. Check your accounts once a month and stop subscriptions you don't use.
  • Career Palace: too much on your plate, and your energy gets scattered. Pick the two or three most important things and finish them first.
  • Life Palace: your thoughts tend to wander this year and it's hard to settle. Write your goals down and look back at them once a week.
  • Spouse Palace: your time together easily gets eaten up by small chores. Keep a regular stretch of time that's just for the two of you.
  • Property Palace: things at home are easily misplaced. Give everyday items a fixed spot.

Natal and annual, read separately

The natal Wang Shen sits in the same palace for life; the annual set changes every year. Xingge's palace readings only use the annual set, in the "this year" part of the reading. If the same palace also holds Xiao Hao of the Twelve Erudite Gods (Bo Shi) or Xiao Hao of the Twelve Year Gods (Sui Qian), they're all about small, scattered drains, and can be read together as "keep accounts and plan your schedule, and you'll see where things leak."

The Twelve General Gods as a set are not in the (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu), and there is no Quan Shu text on Wang Shen. Bazi (Four Pillars) also has a Wang Shen: the San Ming Tong Hui, a Ming-dynasty classic of Bazi, in its chapter on Jie Sha and Wang Shen says "wang means to lose, to lose from within," the same idea as quietly slipping away here, and in the same positions: Hai for Shen, Zi and Chen; Si for Yin, Wu and Xu. The name sounds heavy, but just as with the heavy-named small stars among the , Xingge only takes the tendency it describes. See the heavy-named small stars lesson.
