What is Tian Sha?

Tian Sha (Heavenly Sha) is the eighth of the Twelve General Gods (Jiang Qian). In the palace holding Tian Sha, friction with strong-willed people comes easily: a manager, an elder, a collaborator with even firmer opinions than yours. When that happens, stepping back before you meet force with force usually saves effort. It carries very little weight; treat it as a reminder about people in that palace. To see which palace it's in for you, draw your chart.
How Tian Sha is placed
Count seven palaces on from Jiang Xing:
- Yin, Wu and Xu years: Chou
- Shen, Zi and Chen years: Wei
- Si, You and Chou years: Chen
- Hai, Mao and Wei years: Xu
So Tian Sha only lands in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei. In 2026, a Bing Wu year, it is in Chou; in 2027, a Ding Wei year (from February 6, 2027), it is in Xu.
What Tian Sha means
Xingge reads it like this: friction with strong-willed people comes easily; step back before you meet force with force.
The palace directly opposite Tian Sha always holds Pan An. Put the two side by side and it's easy to see: in the Pan An palace you climb, and in the Tian Sha palace you meet the people already at the top. Friction itself isn't bad; often it just means both sides have their own views. Stepping back isn't giving in. It's finding out first what the other person cares about, then deciding where to hold firm and where to give.
Tian Sha in key palaces
Using the annual set:
- Career Palace: this year you and your manager or senior colleagues tend to disagree. Ask what they're aiming for first, then explain your approach.
- Life Palace: you're less willing to give ground this year. When you meet someone just as forceful, pause before you reply.
- Spouse Palace: you both want to take charge more often. Splitting decisions into who handles what beats arguing over everything.
- Friends Palace: there's a more forceful person in your circle. When you disagree, talk in private, not in the group chat.
- Parents Palace: your ideas and your elders' tend to pull against each other. Hear them out first, then say what you plan to do.
Natal and annual, read separately
The natal Tian Sha sits in the same palace for life; the annual set changes every year. Xingge's palace readings only use the annual set, in the "this year" part of the reading. If the same palace also holds Guan Fu (Officials) of the Twelve Erudite Gods (Bo Shi), both are about dealing with rules and authority, and can be read together as "go by the rules and say things clearly."
The Twelve General Gods as a set are not in the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu), and there is no Quan Shu text on Tian Sha. Xingge follows the standard placement and reading.
