Chart settings (advanced)

Schools differ on a few rules. Keep the defaults if unsure; change them if your chart doesn't match one from another site.

A chart can show two Hua Gai (Canopy): one is the Hua Gai minor star, the other is the fifth of the Twelve General Gods (Jiang Qian). This article is about the second. In the palace holding the General God Hua Gai, you want to go at your own pace and don't much feel like following the crowd. Having your own mind is good; just don't push people too far away. To see which palace it falls in for you, draw your chart.

How the General God Hua Gai is placed

Count four palaces on from Jiang Xing. That lands exactly on the storage branch of the year branch's trine:

  • Yin, Wu and Xu years: Xu
  • Shen, Zi and Chen years: Chen
  • Si, You and Chou years: Chou
  • Hai, Mao and Wei years: Wei

So Hua Gai only lands in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei. In 2026, a Bing Wu year, it is in Xu; in 2027, a Ding Wei year (from February 6, 2027), it is in Wei, which is the year's own branch. In every Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei year, Hua Gai sits on the year's branch, sharing a palace with Sui Jian.

How it relates to the Hua Gai minor star

The Hua Gai minor star goes by the birth-year branch, with exactly the same table as above. So on the natal chart, the minor star and the General God always share a palace, and they say the same thing.

The difference is in the annual chart. The minor star never moves for life. The General God is placed again each year by that year's branch, moving to another of the Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei palaces. So "this year's Hua Gai" means the annual General God.

When a palace has the Hua Gai minor star and this year's General God Hua Gai also lands there, Xingge's reading keeps only the minor star's line, so the same palace doesn't show two labels with the same name that you can't tell apart.

What Hua Gai means

Xingge reads it like this: you want to go at your own pace and not follow the crowd; having your own mind is good, just don't push people too far away.

The minor star article is about a lifelong aloofness and taste. The annual General God is more about wanting to step back and think things through on your own in that palace this year. For a while, you may not take other people's advice to heart, and that's all right. Just say what you're thinking, so people know you aren't turning them away.

Hua Gai in key palaces

Using the annual set:

  • Life Palace: you want more time alone and for your own projects this year. Fewer social plans are fine; just look after the people who matter.
  • Career Palace: good for work that needs focus: research, writing, making things. Keep in step with the team's schedule too.
  • Spouse Palace: each of you needs a little space. Make it clear that what you need is time, not distance.
  • Fortune Palace: your mind wants to settle. Reading, sitting quietly or walking alone are all good ways to recharge.
  • Wealth Palace: you spend by your own taste, not by trends. Before buying, ask whether you really need it.

The "double Hua Gai" of the Quan Shu

The table of patterns in volume one of the (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu) has this entry:

Double Hua Gai: Lu Cun and Hua Lu sitting in the Life Palace and meeting Di Kong and Di Jie.

Here "Hua Gai" describes and Lu Cun stacked in the Life Palace and then meeting Di Kong and Di Jie. It has nothing to do with the Twelve General Gods. The set as a whole is not in the Quan Shu; it was added to chart-making later. Bazi (Four Pillars) also has a Hua Gai: the San Ming Tong Hui (a Ming-dynasty classic of Bazi), in its chapter on Jiang Xing and Hua Gai, says "the storage branch at the base of the trine is called Hua Gai," the same position as here. The old texts linked Hua Gai with monks, Daoists and the arts. Read for today, that means going at your own pace and having your own taste. The palace directly opposite Hua Gai always holds Yue Sha.

FAQ

Is the Hua Gai of the Twelve General Gods the same as the Hua Gai minor star?

On the natal chart they are in the same place and always share a palace. The difference is that the minor star never moves for life, while the General God changes position each year by that year's branch.

How is Hua Gai placed?

Four palaces on from Jiang Xing: in Xu for Yin, Wu and Xu years; in Chen for Shen, Zi and Chen years; in Chou for Si, You and Chou years; in Wei for Hai, Mao and Wei years. So it only lands in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei.

Hua Gai is in my Spouse Palace this year. Does that mean the relationship is cooling?

No. It's more that each of you needs a bit more space this year. Say clearly what you need and keep regular time for each other, and the relationship stays steady.
